Axiom Space’s Artemis spacesuit is called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. Axiom and Prada revealed its final flight design on October 16, 2024, but that did not mean the suit was flight-certified or ready for the Moon. As of NASA’s February 12, 2026 update, Axiom had completed a contractor-led technical review; NASA’s critical design review and final testing were still ahead.

What is the AxEMU, and what does it look like?

The AxEMU is the spacesuit Axiom Space is developing for NASA’s Artemis lunar missions. Its public flight design was unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. Axiom and Prada presented it as the result of a joint engineering and industrial-design effort: Prada’s product-development team contributed material recommendations and features intended to protect astronauts in the lunar environment, while Axiom remains responsible for the spacesuit system and its qualification for NASA missions.

The design is intended for the demands of surface exploration, not simply to reproduce the appearance of an earlier NASA suit. NASA describes the flight design as incorporating upgraded life-support systems and tools intended to support science and sample collection. The public reveal established what the flight design looked like; it did not establish that the suit had completed qualification or certification.

How did the suit develop from prototype to flight design?

Date Milestone What it means
June 1, 2022 NASA selected Axiom Space for the first Artemis moonwalking-suit task order, with a base value of $228.5 million (NASA, 2022). Axiom’s assigned work spans design and development through qualification, certification, production, training suits, and support equipment.
March 15, 2023 NASA and Axiom publicly revealed an AxEMU prototype. The prototype drew on NASA’s xEMU work and incorporated technology, training considerations, astronaut feedback, maneuverability, and compatibility improvements.
October 16, 2024 Axiom and Prada revealed the flight design in Milan. This was the public reveal of the flight design, not confirmation of completed flight certification.
February 12, 2026 NASA reported that Axiom had completed a contractor-led technical review. NASA’s critical design sync and final testing remained to be completed.

What is the design intended to improve?

AxEMU evolves work from NASA’s xEMU program. Its stated engineering priorities address what astronauts need to move, work, and stay protected while exploring the lunar surface.

  • Mobility: Greater flexibility and range of motion are intended to help astronauts move across more of the lunar landscape and perform exploration and geology tasks.
  • Fit: NASA says the suit must accommodate at least 90% of the U.S. male and female population. This is a program requirement, not a claim that one suit size fits every astronaut.
  • Environmental protection: The suit is being developed to protect its wearer in the harsh lunar environment. Prada’s contribution included material recommendations and design features aimed at that protection.
  • Life support and exploration tools: NASA highlights upgraded life-support systems and tools intended to expand science and sample-collection capability.

How is AxEMU different from Apollo-era spacesuits?

The clearest comparison is in the mission the suit is being designed to serve. AxEMU is being developed for Artemis surface exploration, with stated priorities including mobility, a broader fit range, lunar-environment protection, upgraded life support, and tools for science and sample collection. Those priorities describe the goals of the Artemis suit; they are not, by themselves, a complete performance comparison with Apollo hardware.

For readers comparing generations, the useful questions are whether a suit supports the movements required for lunar fieldwork, protects against the environment, fits the intended crew, and provides the systems and tools for its mission. The available program information does not establish a direct, quantified AxEMU-versus-Apollo comparison on those measures.

Is the suit ready for the Moon?

Not on the basis of the public design reveal or the contractor-led review alone. NASA’s February 2026 update said its next critical design sync would assess whether the hardware and systems were on track for final testing and delivery. Testing, qualification, certification, and mission integration are distinct steps between a design reveal and operational use.

NASA’s Office of Inspector General reported in 2026 that NASA’s original goals to demonstrate the lunar and microgravity suits in 2025 and 2026 were overly optimistic and unrealistic. The OIG said Axiom was planning for spacesuit demonstration readiness in late 2027. It also warned that, if delays matched historical averages for comparable programs, demonstrations could slip to 2031. That 2031 date is a risk scenario, not a confirmed demonstration date or an Artemis landing date. The schedule remains dependent on the suit’s reviews and testing, interfaces with the lander, and the wider Artemis program.

What “final design” means—and what it does not

“Final design” refers to the flight design Axiom and Prada publicly revealed in October 2024. It does not mean every technical review, test, or certification was complete. In February 2026, NASA still had a critical design sync and final testing ahead. The public configuration can be called the final flight design while the program continues to verify that the hardware and systems are ready for use.
