To automate a deployed AWS Elemental Live system, use its REST API: create or modify events, manage dynamic-playlist inputs while an event runs, activate prepared inputs, and query event status. The examples below show documented path patterns and workflow shapes—not complete, release-independent request schemas. Verify every endpoint and payload against the API guide for your installed Elemental Live release before using it.

Which Elemental Live interface should you automate?

AWS Elemental Live offers browser, REST, and SNMP interfaces. For integrations and repeatable workflows, REST is the relevant interface: AWS says, “The REST-based interface supports all features of the web interface as well as automation features.” SNMP is intended for basic monitoring and control; it is not a substitute for the documented REST workflows described here. See AWS’s Interfaces for Elemental Live.

This article concerns the Elemental Live software/appliance product, not AWS Elemental MediaLive, which has a separate API reference. AWS describes Elemental Live as formatting live video for broadcast television and streaming to internet-connected devices. The broader suite also includes Elemental Conductor for cluster management and optional Elemental Statmux for multi-program transport streams in a Conductor cluster. See AWS’s Elemental Live overview.

Event creation and modification: the basic request pattern

AWS’s event API examples use HTTP POST to create an event and PUT to modify an existing one. The request body is XML organized under a <live_event> element.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Task Method and path pattern Purpose
Create an event POST http://<Live IP Address>/live_events Submit a new event definition.
Modify an event PUT http://<Live IP Address>/live_events/<live event id> Update the identified event.

AWS’s live events API example illustrates setting an event name and configuring a motion image inserter, including enable_rest. That is a feature-specific payload example, not a complete event schema. Consult the guide matched to your installed release for required fields, supported values, authentication, and any additional headers or request details; do not infer them from these path patterns.

Dynamic playlists: runtime operations and constraints

Dynamic-playlist endpoints let an automation system alter inputs around a running event. AWS documents the following command patterns. They are orientation, not full request specifications: validate endpoint suffixes, payloads, authentication, and version applicability in the on-appliance API guide.

Operation Method and path pattern Documented constraint or effect
Add playlist inputs POST /live_events/<event ID>/inputs Adds inputs to the end of the dynamic playlist for a running event.
Replace playlist inputs POST /live_events/<event ID>/playlist Replaces non-active playlist inputs with the supplied inputs, retaining the active input.
Get event and inputs GET /live_events/<event ID> Retrieves the event and its inputs.
Modify an input PUT /live_events/<event ID>/inputs/<input ID> Modifies a non-active playlist input.
Delete an input DELETE /live_events/<event ID>/inputs/<input ID> Deletes a non-active playlist input.
Prepare an input POST /live_events/<event ID>/prepare_input Prepares an input and can optionally schedule activation.
Activate an input POST /live_events/<event ID>/activate_input Activates an input immediately or at a specified time.
Get event status GET /live_events/<event ID>status Retrieves event status, including input stage and state.

Pay particular attention to the active-input boundary: the documented modify and delete operations apply to a non-active input, and playlist replacement retains the active one. Several dynamic-playlist operations require the event to be running. Check the operation-specific lifecycle requirements in the API guide for your release rather than treating every endpoint as valid at every event state.

Example workflow: prepare and switch playlist inputs

The following sequence synthesizes AWS’s documented command patterns and workflow examples. It is an operator’s planning outline, not a tested end-to-end procedure or a complete set of request bodies.

  1. Create or identify the event and primary input. Use the event lifecycle API to establish the event, then confirm its ID and inputs using GET /live_events/<event ID>.
  2. Build the next playlist segment or segments. For a running event, add inputs with POST /live_events/<event ID>/inputs, or use the playlist endpoint when the intended action is to replace non-active entries while retaining the active input.
  3. Prepare the next input when the workflow calls for it. Use POST /live_events/<event ID>/prepare_input; AWS documents that activation can optionally be scheduled.
  4. Activate the intended input. Use POST /live_events/<event ID>/activate_input for immediate activation or a specified time, as supported by the matching guide.
  5. Check event status. Query GET /live_events/<event ID>status and inspect the reported input stage and state. If the result does not match the expected transition, use the event and input information from the GET endpoint to investigate before issuing another change.

Patterns you can automate with dynamic playlists

AWS’s sample implementations show dynamic playlists used for several operational situations. The exact inputs and timing depend on the event configuration and the API guide for the installed release.

  • Ad interruption: insert file-based ad content during a live input, then return to the live source.
  • Live-source switching: move from one live source to another.
  • Emergency fallback: use looped file content temporarily during an unexpected event, then return to live input.
  • Sequenced segments: play movie and ad segments before returning to a live feed.

AWS describes these patterns in its dynamic playlist examples. Depending on the workflow, a return or source switch can be scheduled or initiated with the REST “Activate Dynamic Playlist Input” operation. Treat the examples as workflow illustrations; they do not establish that a given payload or timing will work unchanged on every deployment.

Check the API guide for your installed release

Version matching matters because the exact deployment release is not specified here. AWS says its current user documents cover Elemental Live from version 2.17 onward and Conductor from version 3.17 onward. AWS also directs users to the Elemental Live API guide in the appliance web interface’s Support tab. Start there for the API guide matching your deployment; confirm the endpoint, XML schema, authentication, and lifecycle requirements before automating production events. See AWS’s Elemental Live documentation and API guide discovery instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

Elemental Live API automation is for operators automating a deployed broadcast and streaming system. If your goal is instead to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
