AV1 can deliver comparable video quality at a lower bitrate than older codecs—or better quality at the same bitrate—but the result depends on the video, encoder, and settings. For live streamers, the practical questions are whether the destination accepts AV1 ingest and whether your system can encode it in real time. YouTube Live accepts AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS; that does not mean every streaming platform does.

What AV1 is—and what it is not

AV1, short for AOMedia Video 1, is a video codec: software and hardware use it to compress video for delivery and then decode it for playback. It is not a streaming service or a particular encoder. The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open codec for high-quality video compression and says its specification is freely available to implementers, whether or not they are members. See the Alliance for Open Media’s AV1 information.

AV1 is designed for efficient compression, including high-resolution video and adaptive streaming. That can help when bandwidth is limited or when you want to preserve detail at a constrained bitrate. It does not guarantee a particular bandwidth saving or a better-looking stream: results vary with content, motion, encoder implementation, settings, and the codec used for comparison.

The Alliance for Open Media’s feature page displays “30% better compression” and attributes the supporting results to a Bitmovin multi-codec dataset. Treat that as the organization’s summary of the cited test, not a universal result for every live stream or a promise of a fixed reduction.

Can you use AV1 for live streaming?

YouTube Live accepts AV1 ingest

YouTube’s current live encoder settings guide lists AV1 as an ingest codec over RTMP/RTMPS. Ingest is the video you send to the platform; it is distinct from the formats viewers receive. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

Check other destinations separately

Do not assume that another service accepts AV1 just because your encoder can produce it, or because that service can play AV1 video. Creator-side ingest support is a separate capability. Check the destination’s current encoder documentation before changing your stream settings; the YouTube settings below are not universal settings for other platforms.

How to configure AV1 for YouTube Live

YouTube’s published AV1 and H.265 bitrate guidance is shown below. These are YouTube Live ingest ranges, not requirements for other services. YouTube lists CBR as the bitrate-control setting, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supports up to 60 fps in this settings table. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to YouTube’s servers.

Resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

Choose a resolution and frame rate your hardware and upload connection can sustain, then use the corresponding YouTube recommendation as a target. The minimum is YouTube’s listed lower bound, not a guarantee that the stream will look good for every scene. Fast movement, fine detail, and changing scenes can make compression more visible.

Additional YouTube AV1 constraints

  • HDR: YouTube’s guide says AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest; it recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR.
  • 4K AV1 tiling: For AV1 streams at 3840×2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns.
  • Before going live: YouTube advises testing the setup before the event and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Do you need a new GPU to encode AV1?

Not necessarily. AV1 decoding support—being able to play AV1 video—does not establish that a device can encode AV1 in real time. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide identifies hardware AV1 encoding support in AMD Radeon RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40, and Intel Arc GPU families. OBS also notes that software AV1 encoding through SVT-AV1 or libaom-av1 requires a high-end CPU for real-time compression.

A hardware encoder moves encoding work to a specialized part of the GPU, but support alone does not guarantee a particular quality or performance level. Hardware generation, encoder implementation, workload, and settings matter. Before buying anything, check your exact GPU model and the encoder options available in OBS, then test a representative stream at your intended resolution and frame rate while running your normal production or game workload.

An upgrade is worth considering only if your current system cannot encode AV1 at the settings you need and your destination accepts AV1 ingest. There is no evidence here to rank individual GPU models or establish that an upgrade is good value for every streamer.

  • Destination support: Confirm the platform accepts the codec as creator-side ingest. Viewer playback support is not the same thing.
  • Bitrate and image quality: Compare codecs at the resolution, frame rate, content type, and bitrate limits you will actually use. Do not count on a fixed AV1 bitrate saving.
  • Encoding capacity: Check whether your hardware encoder is supported and can keep up without harming the rest of your workload.
  • HDR requirements: For YouTube Live HDR ingest, use the codec YouTube recommends for HDR rather than AV1.
  • Viewer delivery: YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Do not assume another platform handles ingest or viewer delivery in the same way.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules still apply

A codec changes how video is compressed, not whether you have the right to stream it or whether it meets YouTube’s rules. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to use, and check applicable platform policies before broadcasting. AV1 does not make copyrighted or reused material safe to stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

AV1 is about encoding format; it does not require you to operate a live encoder on a computer at home. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos or a playlist: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud service loops the video, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera-based live capture. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
