1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo start with automation testing, choose a behavior worth checking, use the language and framework that fit your application or team, write one small test with a known starting state and a clear result, then run it locally until its failures make sense. Add it to continuous integration (CI) only after it behaves predictably on your machine. Not every check needs a browser: use a lighter test when it can verify the requirement, because browser tests take more time and infrastructure to run and maintain.
What automation testing does—and what it does not do
Automation testing uses software to run checks and report whether their observed results match expectations. A test can check a function, an API response, or a user journey through a browser. Automation makes repeated checks easier to run; it does not make a poorly chosen check useful. Start from a requirement and choose the least costly test type that can adequately verify it.
A browser test is useful when the requirement depends on a real browser experience—for example, that a person can submit a form and see a confirmation. If a unit test can verify the same behavior adequately, it is generally a simpler place to check it. Selenium’s guidance discusses the cost of browser tests and advises using a browser only when there is no suitable alternative: Selenium: Overview of Test Automation.
What to learn first
- Testing basics: learn what a requirement, test setup, action, assertion, and failure mean. An assertion is the check that compares an observed result with an expected one.
- Enough programming to read and change a test: learn variables, functions, conditionals, modules, and how to install and run project dependencies in the language you will use.
- One framework: choose based on the application, browser needs, language, existing team conventions, and CI environment. Do not try to learn several frameworks at once.
- One stable scenario: check a user-visible requirement with controlled test data and a small number of actions.
- Repeatable runs and diagnosis: run the test more than once, inspect failures, and address their actual causes before adding more tests.
- CI: after the test is reliable locally, configure a workflow to run it when code changes.
This is a practical learning sequence, not a claim that one framework or curriculum is universally best.

Choose a first framework
The tools below serve different needs. Their official documentation establishes capabilities and learning paths, not a universal ranking or market-share comparison.
| Tool | What its official documentation establishes | Consider it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium | WebDriver drives browsers; Selenium Manager handles browser and driver management by default; Selenium Grid supports distributed runs; Selenium IDE records and plays back actions. | You need WebDriver-based browser automation, distributed execution, or a path that fits your team’s existing languages and infrastructure. Account for browser-test setup and maintenance. |
| Robot Framework | Tests can be organized as readable plain-text sequences of keywords. Its guides list browser and API libraries and link to tutorials, including free online learning material. | Keyword-based, readable test cases and the available libraries suit your team’s conventions. Explore its first-code guide and tutorials and videos. |
| Playwright | Its documentation covers browser installation, running tests in CI, and GitHub Actions; it recommends one worker in CI initially for stability and reproducibility, with parallelization or sharding as scaling options. | You want to follow its documented browser and CI setup and its language and ecosystem fit your application. |
If you are learning for a current job, using the team’s language and conventions is often a sensible first choice: you can get help and reuse established setup. If you are choosing independently, make a small trial with a representative scenario before committing to a larger suite.
Build your first browser test with Playwright
This example checks a fictional local application at http://localhost:3000. It expects a page with a link named “Sign in,” a form with email and password fields, a button named “Continue,” and a visible heading “Welcome back.” Replace the URL and labels with the ones your application actually exposes. The test uses accessible roles and labels so its selectors express what a user encounters rather than depending on fragile layout details.
1. Install and start the application
Use a supported Node.js installation and your project’s package manager. From a new test directory, create a package and install Playwright’s test runner:

npm init -y
npm install --save-dev @playwright/test
npx playwright install
Start the application separately and confirm it is reachable at http://localhost:3000. For a real project, keep tests and application code in the repository’s established structure rather than creating a disconnected test project unnecessarily.
2. Configure a short test
Create playwright.config.js:
const { defineConfig } = require('@playwright/test');
module.exports = defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
use: {
baseURL: 'http://localhost:3000',
browserName: 'chromium'
}
});
Create tests/sign-in.spec.js:
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('a visitor can open the sign-in page and see its confirmation', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill('learner@example.test');
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill('example-password');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Welcome back' })).toBeVisible();
});
The example assumes the app provides a safe test route and accepts the example credentials. Do not use a real person’s account or production data. If the application requires a backend, seed a dedicated test account or arrange a controlled test state instead of relying on data that changes unpredictably.
3. Run it, repeat it, and inspect a failure
Run the test from the project directory:
npx playwright test
It should report one passing test if the app is available and the expected page elements and outcome exist. Run it again. Then make a controlled change—such as temporarily changing the expected heading—and run it once more. A useful failure identifies the check that did not match; restore the expected heading afterward.
The example follows a simple pattern: establish a known state, perform a few actions, and evaluate a meaningful result. Selenium’s test-practice guidance describes setup, actions, and evaluation as the core test steps and recommends short tests: Selenium test automation overview.

Make browser tests dependable
- Test one behavior at a time. Keep setup clear, use only a few meaningful actions, and assert the outcome that matters to the requirement.
- Use stable locators. Prefer accessible roles and labels or an explicit test identifier over selectors tied to styling or deep page structure.
- Control the starting state. Use test data and accounts that your tests can safely create, reset, or reuse. Avoid dependencies on another test having run first.
- Avoid fixed waits as a general repair. A hard-coded delay can make a test slower without ensuring the page is ready. Wait for a meaningful condition, such as the element or state the test needs.
- Keep scope in proportion. Use browser coverage for behavior that needs a browser; put lower-level checks at a lighter layer where they can adequately verify the requirement.
- Investigate before retrying. A failure may indicate a product regression, unavailable service, incorrect test data, a changed locator, or timing instability. Determine which before changing the test.
Run the test in GitHub Actions
Once the test passes consistently on a developer machine, automate it in CI so changes can be checked without relying on someone to remember to run it. GitHub Actions workflows can run on pushes; the quickstart explains how to create one and use a starter workflow: GitHub Actions quickstart.
For a JavaScript project, a minimal workflow can install dependencies, install Playwright browsers and system dependencies, and run the suite. Save this as .github/workflows/playwright.yml and adjust the Node version and app-start command for your project:
name: Browser tests
on: [push, pull_request]
jobs:
test:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with:
node-version: 22
cache: npm
- run: npm ci
- run: npx playwright install --with-deps
# Add the command that starts your app and keeps it running here.
- run: npx playwright test --workers=1
The `npm ci`, browser-install, and test-run commands follow Playwright’s documented CI flow; Playwright recommends starting with one worker in CI to favor stability and reproducibility. The example pins CI action major versions, but teams should follow their own dependency and action update policies. See Playwright’s continuous integration guide. The workflow will fail if the application is not started or reachable before the test step; add the project’s build and start steps, or configure a CI service container as appropriate.
One worker is a conservative starting point, not a permanent speed target. When the suite is reliable and longer execution becomes a problem, consider parallel tests or sharding across CI jobs, then check that data setup and shared resources remain isolated.

Troubleshooting common first failures
- “Executable doesn’t exist” or browser launch failure: install Playwright’s browser binaries with
npx playwright installlocally ornpx playwright install --with-depsin a Linux CI environment. Confirm that the install step uses the same project dependencies as the test run. - Connection refused or navigation timeout: the app may not be running, may be listening on another port, or may not be ready when the test begins. Check the configured
baseURL, start command, and service readiness before the test step. - Locator resolves to no element: verify the current page and accessible name in the browser. The application may use different text, require another route, or render the element only after an action. Update the locator to match the actual user-facing control.
- Assertion fails although the page loaded: check whether the expected result is correct for the test state, whether the app responded with an error, and whether the test account or data is valid. Do not weaken the assertion until you know the intended behavior.
- Intermittent pass/fail results: look for uncontrolled data, tests sharing accounts or files, external service dependencies, and assumptions about load timing. Make the state deterministic and wait for a specific condition rather than adding an arbitrary delay.
- Works locally but fails in CI: compare runtime configuration, environment variables, operating system dependencies, app startup, and available test data. CI starts from a clean environment, so undocumented local prerequisites will be missing.
ScreenshotNeo: a separate tool for capturing pages
Browser automation frameworks run tests and evaluate behavior; a screenshot API captures rendered pages for visual records or other workflows. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for the assertions in the Playwright test above. It can be useful when a workflow needs a page image or PDF without setting up and maintaining its own browser capture service. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
Or skip the browser setup
For a page capture, make one GET request. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of https://stripe.com:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
- Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. All features are on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to learn programming before automation testing?
For code-based frameworks such as the Playwright example, basic programming helps you understand and maintain tests. Robot Framework’s keyword-driven, plain-text test style is another approach, though selecting libraries and maintaining a suite still requires learning its tools.
Should I automate every manual test?
No. Automate checks that are valuable to repeat, and use a browser only when the requirement needs one. Some checks are better covered at a lighter testing layer or performed manually.
Does ScreenshotNeo run my application’s automated tests?
No. It captures a web page as an image or PDF. Use a test framework such as Playwright to interact with an application and assert whether its behavior is correct.
