Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo you actually test Terraform? If so, how? Terratest lets infrastructure engineers answer that with Go tests that deploy real infrastructure, check how it behaves, and clean it up afterward. That makes it an integration-testing approach—not a plan-only check—and a run can create AWS charges.
What Terratest tests
Terratest is a Go library for automated tests of infrastructure code. Tests use Go’s testing framework and helpers to invoke Terraform or OpenTofu, provision an environment, and verify the result. Checks can include inspecting outputs or exercising a deployed service through HTTP requests, AWS API calls, or SSH, depending on the test.
This is a different testing layer from reviewing or validating configuration without deploying it: a Terratest run can check whether actual provisioned resources work as intended. The trade-off is that the test needs an environment, time to create and inspect resources, and an owner responsible for teardown.
What you need before testing AWS
- Go: The Terratest quick start currently lists Go 1.26 or later. Check the quick-start requirements when setting up, since language requirements can change.
- Terraform or OpenTofu: Install the tool your project uses. The quick start shows OpenTofu 1.12.3 as a pinned example and notes that Terratest’s Terraform helper can use either tool; set
TerraformBinary: "tofu"to select OpenTofu explicitly. - A Go module and test dependencies: The quick start uses Go’s standard testing framework and runs tests through
go test. - AWS account access: Configure credentials with the permissions needed for the resources under test and choose an AWS region. Use scoped credentials rather than broad, long-lived access where possible.
- A disposable test configuration: Start with an example you have read and understand. The Terratest quick start and AWS example walk through basic setup and deployment.
The AWS example provisions resources in your account and explicitly warns that you are responsible for charges. Describing sample resources as Free Tier resources is not a promise that a run will cost nothing: eligibility and charges depend on account status and actual usage.

How a Terratest run works
1. Prepare the test environment
Put the infrastructure configuration in a disposable test directory or otherwise isolate it from shared environments. Give resources distinct names or tags so they are identifiable, and make sure the AWS identity can create and remove only what the test needs.
2. Initialize and apply the infrastructure
The Go test calls the Terratest Terraform helper to initialize and apply the configuration. Choose Terraform or OpenTofu deliberately; for OpenTofu, configure the helper’s TerraformBinary field as "tofu".

- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
3. Assert the deployed behavior
Use the outputs and test helpers to check the outcome the infrastructure is meant to provide. For example, a test can make an HTTP request to a deployed endpoint and assert an expected response, or use an AWS API to inspect a resource. Assertions should test a useful behavior, not just whether an apply command completed successfully.
4. Destroy and verify cleanup
Destroy the environment after the assertions, including when a test fails. The AWS example directs readers to run terraform destroy when finished. Treat cleanup as part of the test design: verify in the AWS account that the resources were actually removed, and investigate any leftovers rather than assuming a successful test means teardown succeeded.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
The quick start shows a verbose run with a 30-minute timeout:
go test -v -timeout 30m
That command is a documented example, not a universal timeout recommendation. Choose a limit that fits the configuration and account for the time needed for provisioning, checks, and cleanup.

Make AWS tests safer and more repeatable
- Isolate the account or environment: Prefer a dedicated test account or a clearly separated environment so test-created resources do not affect production.
- Scope access: Grant the test identity only the AWS permissions the configuration requires. Control how CI obtains credentials and avoid exposing them in logs.
- Make resources identifiable: Use unique names or tags that let operators distinguish concurrent runs and find leftovers.
- Set bounded timeouts: Bound the overall Go test and, where appropriate, individual operations so a hung test does not leave an environment running indefinitely.
- Plan failure cleanup: Ensure teardown is attempted even if an assertion fails, and check cleanup results. Keep a documented manual recovery path for resources a failed teardown leaves behind.
- Control parallelism: Parallel runs can contend for shared names, quotas, or environment state. Isolate each run or serialize tests that are not safe to run concurrently.
- Keep diagnostic output: Preserve relevant test and provisioning logs so failures can be distinguished from infrastructure defects, access problems, and transient errors.
Terratest documentation also covers retries, error handling, parallelism, static analysis, testing environments, and CI/CD. Apply retries selectively: a retry may help with a transient failure, but should not hide a repeatable defect in the infrastructure or assertion.

A CI job can run the same Go tests with go test, but it needs controlled AWS access and a defined lifecycle for each test environment. Arrange the workflow so provisioning, assertions, and teardown are observable stages; ensure cleanup is attempted if an earlier stage fails, and make someone or something responsible for checking failed cleanup.

Account for potentially long infrastructure runs in job timeouts, retain logs needed to diagnose failures, and avoid overlapping runs against shared resources unless names and environments are isolated. A useful CI design makes the AWS account, region, credentials, and teardown behavior explicit rather than treating the test as an ordinary unit test.
An AWS Developer Tools article documents an example using CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeCommit, Terraform, and Terratest: How to test your Terraform infrastructure with Terratest. It is one documented implementation pattern, not a requirement to use those services or a guarantee that its historical configuration is current.
When Terratest is a good fit
Choose Terratest when your team is comfortable writing Go and needs confidence in behavior that can only be checked against deployed infrastructure. It is less attractive when the main need is a quick, deployment-free configuration check, or when the team cannot safely provision, pay for, and clean up test resources.
| Decision question | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Does the test need real infrastructure? | Terratest can deploy resources and test their behavior; that realism brings environment setup and teardown work. |
| What behavior must be checked? | Use it for runtime checks against provisioned resources, such as an endpoint response or an AWS API result. |
| Does the team want Go tests? | Terratest is built around Go’s testing framework, so Go familiarity and dependency management are part of the fit. |
| Can the team own cost and cleanup? | Runs can incur AWS charges and leave resources behind if teardown fails; account isolation, access control, and cleanup verification are essential. |
Terratest is not a substitute for every other infrastructure-testing layer. The practical choice depends on whether deployed behavior matters enough to justify real AWS runs, Go-based test code, execution time, and explicit cleanup ownership.
