For a web application, a useful test starts from a known state, performs a user-relevant action, and verifies an observable result. Use a browser test when browser behavior or an end-to-end interaction matters; use a lighter test when it can verify the same requirement with less setup and execution cost.
What automated functional testing checks
A functional test asks whether a feature or system works as required. For example, a test of a password-reset flow might prepare an account, request a reset, and verify that the expected confirmation appears. The test should make clear both the starting conditions and the outcome that demonstrates the requirement.
Functional testing overlaps with other test categories, but their questions differ. Selenium’s documentation frames functional testing as checking whether the product is built right, while acceptance testing asks whether the right product is being built. Integration testing checks interactions between modules; system testing checks the integrated product; performance testing measures performance; and regression testing reruns checks after changes. A practical test suite may cover more than one category, so name each test for the risk it is meant to catch. Selenium’s testing-practices documentation provides further context.
How to write your first automated functional test
1. Define one requirement and its boundary
Choose a specific user outcome, such as “a signed-in customer can update a delivery address.” Write down what must be true before the test and what observable result should follow. Keep the test boundary narrow enough that a failure points to a useful place.

2. Decide whether a browser test is warranted
Ask whether a unit, API, or other lower-level test can verify the behavior adequately. Browser tests are appropriate when rendered interface behavior, browser interaction, or a critical workflow across application parts needs checking. They cost more to run and maintain and may require substantial infrastructure. Cypress also notes that end-to-end tests can be harder to set up, run, and maintain. Selenium’s overview of test automation discusses these trade-offs.
3. Prepare controlled test state
Arrange the required account, records, permissions, or other application state before the browser interaction when possible. If the application exposes a suitable API, use it to create test data rather than navigating through the UI for every setup. Use fresh or isolated state and mock external services when that is appropriate for the behavior under test.
4. Perform a short, meaningful action
Use the framework’s interaction APIs to navigate, locate controls, click, fill fields, or select options. Prefer locators that express the interface contract—such as an accessible role and name—rather than relying on hidden implementation details. Playwright documents role-based locators and waits for an element to be actionable before interacting with it. Playwright’s writing-tests guide describes its approach.

Please select C960 webcam as the default camera and microphone device in your application and ensure camera/microphone permissions are enabled, especially on macOS. (Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)
5. Assert the expected result
An action alone does not show that the feature worked. Verify a result tied to the requirement: a visible confirmation, changed URL, rendered value, enabled control, or persisted record. Use assertions that wait for the expected condition rather than checking too early. Playwright provides asynchronous assertions that retry until their condition is met; Cypress’s introductory example follows a link and checks the resulting URL. Cypress’s first-test guide shows the setup, action, and assertion pattern.

6. Run the test and investigate failures
Run locally and in the CI environment that matters to the project. When a test fails, determine whether the cause is a product defect, missing setup, timing, or an environment issue. Fix the underlying state or synchronization problem instead of adding arbitrary delays. Add browser and operating-system coverage according to supported user environments and project risk; broader coverage also adds operational complexity.
Example: test a profile update
This framework-neutral example describes the test’s intent rather than runnable code. Adapt the locators and expected text to your application.

- Setup: Create or select a test user with permission to edit a profile, and ensure the profile starts with a known display name.
- Action: Open the profile page, change the display name, and submit the form.
- Assertion: Verify that the updated name is visible after submission. If the requirement includes persistence, reload the page and verify the value remains.
Keep this case independent of other tests. If a separate requirement checks validation for an invalid name, make that a separate test with its own starting state and expected error.
Keep browser tests reliable and diagnosable
- Make tests independent. Each test should establish its own state and should not rely on a previous test having run successfully. Playwright’s runner uses isolated browser contexts, and its guidance connects isolation with reproducibility and easier debugging. Playwright’s best-practices guide recommends testing user-visible behavior and isolating tests.
- Prefer short cases. Avoid one script that creates an account, configures it, fills a cart, checks out, and submits feedback if each stage can be covered independently. Focused tests usually make failures easier to locate.
- Use condition-based waiting. Use framework-provided actionability checks and waiting assertions where available. Avoid fixed sleeps as a substitute for understanding when the application is ready.
- Make failures explain themselves. Use clear test names and reporting, and keep each test focused on a small number of related assertions.
- Control dependencies and data. Use suitable setup APIs, isolated data, or mocks so unrelated services and shared state do not make results unpredictable.
Choosing Selenium, Playwright, or Cypress
There is no universal winner established by the documentation below. Treat each project’s guidance as a description of its capabilities, then evaluate fit for your languages, application architecture, browser and operating-system requirements, CI workflow, debugging needs, and maintenance capacity.
| Tool | Documented emphasis | Evaluate for your project |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium | Browser automation across browsers and operating systems, with test-practice guidance. | Language support, browser and OS matrix, drivers, infrastructure, and reporting. |
| Playwright | Browser actions, locators, automatic actionability waits, assertions, and isolated contexts. | Browser and project compatibility, language fit, CI execution, and debugging workflow. |
| Cypress | End-to-end and component testing, with interactive examples for browser applications. | Testing needs, CI workflow, ecosystem, and any service requirements. |
The documentation is guidance, not a controlled comparative benchmark. For more on the tools’ stated testing types, see Cypress’s overview of end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing. Cypress describes its locally installed Cypress App as free and Cypress Cloud as a paid service for recording tests and surfacing results and analytics; check its current terms before deciding whether Cloud is relevant.

What to automate first
Start with behavior whose failure would matter to users and that can be checked repeatably. A practical prioritization checklist is:
- Is the behavior tied to a clear requirement or important user task?
- Does it cross a browser or application boundary that a lower-level test cannot adequately cover?
- Can the test set up its own data and verify a specific observable outcome?
- Will the expected value of catching regressions justify the execution and maintenance cost?
Automate only the layer needed to establish confidence. A broad browser test is not automatically better than a focused API or component test; choose the smallest reliable check that covers the risk.
