Automated browser login usually means a browser or password-manager extension fills saved credentials into a website’s recognized sign-in fields. It saves typing, but it does not necessarily submit the form or complete the sign-in: a site may still require a click, account choice, CAPTCHA, or multi-factor authentication (MFA). Passkeys can appear alongside saved passwords in an autofill menu, but they are a separate, passwordless sign-in method.
What automated browser login does—and does not do
A password manager stores login details and offers or places them into fields when it recognizes a sign-in form. Depending on the browser, its settings, and the site, credentials may fill automatically or appear as a suggestion for you to choose. Chrome documents autofill for saved passwords when sign-in fields are available; Firefox lets users configure automatic login filling. Neither behavior guarantees that every site will be recognized or that filling credentials finishes authentication.
Think of autofill as one step in a sign-in flow, not as a way to bypass it. A website can require you to press its sign-in button, select an account, answer a CAPTCHA, approve a second factor, or complete another check. Some sites use changing or unusual forms that a manager may not identify correctly. The exact experience can also depend on browser and operating-system versions, extension configuration, and the site’s implementation.
Browser password managers and extensions
Built-in browser managers
Chrome and Firefox both document features for saving, managing, and filling passwords within the browser. A built-in manager is convenient if you already use that browser’s password tools. Chrome also says it matches saved passwords to the websites they are intended for, which can help protect against lookalike sites. That is a documented Chrome protection, not a guarantee against every phishing technique, a compromised device, malicious extensions, or deceptive account-recovery flows.

Firefox’s documented Autofill experience can include choosing among multiple saved logins and, on supported sites, passkey sign-in. Firefox also describes password imports, password generation, and breach alerts on its feature page. Availability and controls can change by version and platform, so check the current settings in the browser you use.
Third-party password-manager extensions
An extension can provide password autofill across browsers supported by its vendor and may connect that experience to a separate credential vault. Coverage and behavior are product-specific; do not assume every extension works in every browser or fills every website the same way. Keeper, for example, documents KeeperFill support for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and other Chromium-based browsers, including password and passkey autofill. Keeper advises disabling the browser’s built-in password manager to avoid interference when using KeeperFill. Treat that as Keeper’s setup recommendation, not a universal requirement for all extensions.
Native tools and extensions are not established here as a hands-on reliability or security ranking. Choose based on the browsers and devices you need to cover, where you want credentials managed, available controls, and the manager’s documented account-recovery and sync behavior. Then confirm that the websites you use can be filled reliably.

How to enable automatic password filling
Exact menu names and locations vary by browser version and operating system. Use the browser’s current password or autofill settings, rather than relying on an old menu path.

Decide whether to use the browser’s built-in manager or a third-party extension. If you choose KeeperFill, follow Keeper’s recommendation to disable the built-in manager to avoid conflicts; that advice is specific to Keeper.
- Enable saving and autofill as needed. In your browser or extension settings, look for the password, login, or autofill controls. Firefox documents a setting to enable or disable automatic login filling and a way to block password saving on selected websites. Chrome documents controls for managing saved passwords and autofill.
- Save a login for the correct site. Sign in and accept the manager’s save prompt, or add the credential through its password manager. Check the site associated with the saved entry: credentials intended for one domain should not be treated as the login for a different site.
- Return to the site’s sign-in page. If credentials do not fill immediately, select the manager’s suggestion or open its menu and choose the matching login. A site may require an explicit selection rather than silently filling fields.
- Finish the site’s own authentication steps. Submit the form if required, then complete any account choice, MFA, CAPTCHA, or other prompt the site presents.
How websites help password managers recognize sign-in fields
Autofill depends partly on how a site labels its form fields. Google’s Chrome for Developers guidance recommends stable field identifiers and suitable autocomplete values. For an existing password field in a sign-in form, it specifically recommends autocomplete="current-password" and id="current-password". A username field should also have a stable, meaningful identifier and an appropriate autocomplete value so browsers can identify its purpose.
Changing field names, missing or misleading labels, and dynamically generated forms can make suggestions disappear or land in the wrong field. Site developers should use stable name or id attributes and the appropriate autocomplete tokens instead of relying only on visual appearance or placeholder text. Users generally cannot correct a site’s markup themselves; they can try choosing the saved login manually or report a broken form to the site.

Why a password manager may not fill a login
Check the simple causes first, then determine whether the issue is specific to the site or to the manager.
- No suggestion appears: Confirm autofill is enabled and that a login is saved for the exact website you opened. Search the manager for the site and verify the saved entry’s address.
- The wrong login appears: Look for multiple saved accounts for that site and select the intended one. Remove or update stale entries only after checking that you still need them.
- Fields stay empty on one site: The sign-in form may be difficult for a manager to recognize, particularly if its field identifiers are missing, unstable, or generated dynamically. Try invoking the manager’s menu and choosing the credential explicitly; if that fails, the site may need to improve its form markup.
- Two managers compete: If both the browser and an extension offer credentials, check their settings. Keeper specifically recommends disabling the native manager when using KeeperFill; other vendors may give different guidance.
- Credentials fill but sign-in does not finish: Look for a submit button, account chooser, MFA prompt, CAPTCHA, or other site-controlled step. Autofill does not promise to submit the form or bypass these checks.
- A site does not offer password saving: Firefox documents an option to block saving on selected sites. Check whether the site was added to that exception list, or whether a managed device or extension setting is controlling the behavior.
- Behavior changed after an update: Recheck browser, operating-system, and extension settings, and consult the vendor’s current instructions. Controls and support can vary across versions and platforms.
Is password autofill safe?
Autofill is useful, but safety depends on more than whether a password manager fills a field. Chrome documents matching saved passwords to their intended websites as an anti-phishing safeguard. That can help distinguish a genuine site from a lookalike, but it does not make every sign-in flow safe or protect an infected device, a compromised session, a malicious extension, or an account’s recovery process.

Use the manager’s website matching as one signal, not as permission to ignore the address bar or account alerts. Be cautious if a credential appears on an unexpected domain or a page reached through an unsolicited message. Protect the device and the account used to access the vault, and follow the manager’s current guidance for recovery and synchronization. The available documentation does not establish a universal security winner among browser managers and extensions.

How to stop passwords autofilling on a site
If you want to stop a browser from filling credentials on a particular site, use its password or autofill settings to disable automatic filling or add a site exception where supported. Firefox documents both configurable automatic login filling and the ability to block password saving on selected sites. For other browsers and extensions, controls differ; use the current vendor documentation to locate the equivalent setting.
There is a difference between stopping automatic filling and deleting saved credentials. If you only want to prevent fields from being populated, turn off autofill or use a site-specific control if available. If you no longer want the manager to retain a login, remove that saved entry as a separate action. Check the behavior afterward in a fresh sign-in session.

A passkey is a different kind of credential. OWASP describes passkeys as discoverable WebAuthn public-key credentials used for passwordless authentication without sending a shared secret to the application. The private key remains under authenticator control. When a system correctly verifies the relying-party ID (RP ID) and origin, that binding can provide phishing resistance.

Some browsers place passkey choices in the same Autofill interface as passwords. That shared menu does not mean a passkey is a password being typed into a field. Passkey support depends on the site, browser, operating system, and authenticator. Passkeys also do not by themselves resolve weak account recovery, compromised sessions, or device compromise. Firefox documents passkey sign-in on supported sites; OWASP explains the security properties and lifecycle limits.
