To test a web app across browsers, define the browser and operating-system combinations your product supports, run the same user-facing checks against each combination, and create a separate Selenium WebDriver session for every test invocation. JUnit organizes and reports those invocations; Selenium WebDriver controls the browser. Neither a passing test in one browser nor Selenium’s shared API proves compatibility in environments you did not test.

How JUnit and Selenium divide the work

Selenium WebDriver is the browser-control layer. Its language bindings send commands through browser-specific implementations. Selenium describes WebDriver as using browser automation APIs provided by browser vendors to control browsers and run tests (Selenium overview). The W3C defines WebDriver as a platform- and language-neutral interface for inspecting and controlling a browser (W3C WebDriver).

JUnit is the test-running and organization layer. JUnit Jupiter provides test methods, lifecycle callbacks, extensions, and parameterized tests. It does not choose or control a browser: your setup must create or request the WebDriver session that a test needs. Keep these responsibilities separate in the code so a test describes an application behavior while its setup determines where that behavior runs.

Choose a compatibility matrix from your support commitments

There is no universal Selenium-mandated browser list or browser count. Start with the combinations your application promises to support and the environments your users actually use. Selenium documents browser-specific functionality for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari; that list is not a recommendation to test every browser or version (Selenium browser documentation).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Browsers and versions: decide whether to cover only currently supported releases or multiple versions where your product makes that commitment.
  • Operating systems: a local run on one developer OS does not cover other supported desktop platforms. Add those platforms locally or through remote execution.
  • Execution location: local sessions are straightforward for a small matrix. Remote Grid sessions are useful when you need browser versions or operating systems that are not installed on the development machine.
  • Feedback time: serial execution is simpler to diagnose. Parallel execution can shorten a matrix run, but needs sufficient machines and resources; there is no universal Grid concurrency figure.
  • Repeatability versus upkeep: pinning browser and driver combinations can make runs more comparable, but those pins need maintenance. Automatically chosen environments reduce pin management while allowing the tested version to change.

Record the matrix in a form the team can review, such as a CI job list. Each result should identify browser, browser version, operating system, and test scenario. A green run only establishes that the exercised checks passed in the environments actually run.

Build a JUnit 5 test that selects a browser

The example below uses JUnit Jupiter parameterized tests and Selenium’s browser-specific drivers. It assumes Java 17 or later, JUnit Jupiter 5.13.1, and Selenium Java 4.35.0; use versions approved for your project and check Selenium’s browser/driver compatibility guidance when upgrading. Selenium Manager, included with recent Selenium releases, can manage driver discovery for common local setups; managed downloads require a reachable network and may be restricted in locked-down environments.

Maven dependencies:

<properties>
  <maven.compiler.release>17</maven.compiler.release>
  <junit.version>5.13.1</junit.version>
  <selenium.version>4.35.0</selenium.version>
</properties>

<dependencies>
  <dependency>
    <groupId>org.junit.jupiter</groupId>
    <artifactId>junit-jupiter</artifactId>
    <version>${junit.version}</version>
    <scope>test</scope>
  </dependency>
  <dependency>
    <groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
    <artifactId>selenium-java</artifactId>
    <version>${selenium.version}</version>
    <scope>test</scope>
  </dependency>
</dependencies>

Test class:

import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertTrue;

import java.time.Duration;
import java.util.stream.Stream;

import org.junit.jupiter.params.ParameterizedTest;
import org.junit.jupiter.params.provider.MethodSource;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.edge.EdgeDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver;

class SignInCompatibilityTest {
    enum Browser { CHROME, FIREFOX, EDGE }

    static Stream<Browser> browsers() {
        return Stream.of(Browser.CHROME, Browser.FIREFOX, Browser.EDGE);
    }

    @ParameterizedTest(name = "sign-in page works in {0}")
    @MethodSource("browsers")
    void signInFormIsAvailable(Browser browser) {
        WebDriver driver = newDriver(browser);
        try {
            driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(2));
            driver.get("https://example.com/sign-in");

            WebElement email = driver.findElement(By.name("email"));
            WebElement password = driver.findElement(By.name("password"));
            WebElement submit = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("button[type='submit']"));

            assertTrue(email.isDisplayed(), "email field should be visible");
            assertTrue(password.isDisplayed(), "password field should be visible");
            assertTrue(submit.isEnabled(), "submit button should be enabled");
        } finally {
            driver.quit();
        }
    }

    private static WebDriver newDriver(Browser browser) {
        return switch (browser) {
            case CHROME -> new ChromeDriver();
            case FIREFOX -> new FirefoxDriver();
            case EDGE -> new EdgeDriver();
        };
    }
}

Replace the example URL and selectors with elements from your application. The assertion checks that the form controls are present and usable; it does not test successful authentication, validation, responsive layout, or every browser behavior. Add assertions for the journeys and browser-sensitive behavior that matter to your support commitments.

Run the test locally

  1. Install a supported browser on the machine running the test. Selenium must be able to start that browser; for environments that prevent automatic driver management, install and configure a compatible driver explicitly.
  2. Save the class under src/test/java in a Maven project, with the dependencies above.
  3. Change the test URL and selectors to match an accessible test environment.
  4. Run mvn test. JUnit reports each browser argument as its own parameterized invocation; inspect the test report for the browser case that failed.

Each invocation constructs and closes its own session in a finally block. That matters when an assertion or navigation fails: without cleanup, browser processes can remain open and consume resources. For suites with many tests, you can move session management into a JUnit extension or a shared test fixture, while retaining a clear rule about which invocation owns and closes each driver.

Expand the matrix with Selenium Grid

Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands from the client to remote browser instances, enabling execution on different browser versions and platforms and supporting parallel runs (Selenium Grid documentation). Keep the same test intent while changing the session endpoint and requested browser capabilities.

For example, after starting a Grid that is reachable at http://localhost:4444 and registering the desired browser nodes, replace the local driver factory with a remote driver:

    return new RemoteWebDriver(
        URI.create("http://localhost:4444").toURL(), capabilities);
}

Use the browser names and capabilities supported by the nodes and Grid version you actually run. For a simple one-machine setup, Selenium’s Grid guide describes Standalone; Hub/Node or Distributed setups support multiple machines. Resource needs depend on the browser, workload, machine, and concurrency. Selenium gives roughly 1 GB RAM per browser session as a planning reference, while cautioning that actual use varies (Grid getting started).

Do not increase parallelism just by raising a thread count. Confirm that the Grid has enough available sessions and machine capacity, and that your application test environment tolerates concurrent users and test data. If simultaneous cases share accounts or mutable records, isolate or reset that data so a race is not misdiagnosed as a browser defect.

Interpret browser-specific failures accurately

A failure in one browser/version is a compatibility signal, not automatic proof of an application bug. First determine whether the application, browser/driver pairing, or environment caused it. WebDriver uses browser-vendor automation implementations, and Selenium’s browser documentation notes browser-specific functionality; a shared API does not make implementations identical.

  • Only one environment fails: rerun that exact browser/version and platform, then compare the browser console, driver logs, page state, and test artifacts with a passing run.
  • Session creation fails before navigation: check that the browser is installed, the requested capability matches an available node, and browser and driver versions are compatible.
  • Navigation or element lookup times out: distinguish a slow or unavailable test environment from an application regression. Prefer explicit waits for the condition the test needs rather than long fixed sleeps.
  • Parallel runs fail inconsistently: look for shared test data, session limits, or resource pressure before concluding that the browser is incompatible.
  • The test passes locally but fails on Grid: check the remote node’s browser version, operating system, fonts, viewport, permissions, and network access. Those environment differences can change results.

Report only what ran: for example, “the sign-in form test passed on the listed Chrome and Firefox environments.” Do not label an untested version, operating system, mobile browser, or workflow as supported based on another case passing.

When to use an integration or hosted environment

JUnit’s extensions allow teams to package repeated setup and cleanup, and third-party integrations exist. Selenium-Jupiter is one optional example described in a 2024 paper as a JUnit 5 extension for Selenium WebDriver, including cross-browser use cases. It is not part of Selenium or JUnit itself; check its current maintenance and compatibility before adopting it.

A hosted browser-testing environment is another option when maintaining browser machines is not worthwhile. AWS documentation describes desktop browser testing using the WebDriver model and session artifacts such as logs or video (AWS Device Farm TestGrid). Verify any provider’s current browser inventory, availability, pricing, and artifact retention directly before committing to it; these details vary and are not established here.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for interactive Selenium/JUnit compatibility tests. Use it when a workflow needs a rendered screenshot or PDF rather than browser-driven assertions. One GET request can return an image or PDF; the endpoint and parameter details are in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes screenshot, page-info, and PDF capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for plan details, or sign up free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does JUnit perform cross-browser testing by itself?

No. JUnit runs and organizes test invocations; the test setup must create or request the browser session through Selenium WebDriver.

Can a passing Selenium test prove that a website works in every browser?

No. It provides evidence only for the browser, version, operating system, and workflows included in the run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can screenshots replace Selenium compatibility tests?

No. A screenshot service can capture rendered pages, but it does not replace interactive test assertions across browser environments.
