Dustman – AutoClose Tabs automatically closes inactive Firefox tabs. Its listed default is to close tabs that have not been used for 20 minutes while keeping at least five tabs open. Pinned tabs and tabs that are playing sound are excluded, and the Dustman button can restore tabs it closed. Review those safeguards before enabling it if losing an unpinned tab would be disruptive.
What Dustman does by default
The Mozilla Add-ons listing for Dustman – AutoClose Tabs, published by qzb and mbid, describes an extension that closes tabs you no longer need. Its quoted default behavior is: “By default it closes tabs which haven’t been used in the last 20 minutes, leaving at least 5 tabs open.”
| Rule | Listed behavior |
|---|---|
| Inactivity threshold | Closes tabs not used in the last 20 minutes |
| Minimum open tabs | Leaves at least five tabs open |
| Pinned tabs | Ignored by Dustman |
| Tabs playing sound | Ignored by Dustman |
| Recovery | Tabs Dustman closes can be restored from the Dustman button |
The five-tab floor is not a promise that every tab you care about will remain open: an unpinned, silent tab can still meet the inactivity rule. Treat the restore control as a recovery option, not as a substitute for bookmarking or saving important work.
Install Dustman cautiously
- Open Firefox’s Mozilla Add-ons site and search for Dustman – AutoClose Tabs.
- Check that the publisher shown is qzb and mbid.
- Review the requested permission, listed as Access browser tabs, then choose Firefox’s option to add the extension.
- After installation, locate the Dustman button in Firefox’s toolbar or extensions controls before leaving the browser unattended.
Firefox add-ons can be managed from the browser’s extensions controls. Use that area to disable or remove Dustman if its behavior does not suit your workflow.

How to recover a tab Dustman closed
The listing says tabs closed by Dustman are restorable through the Dustman button. Select that button and look for the archived or closed-tab entries it presents, then choose the tab you want to reopen. The listing excerpt does not document a more detailed recovery sequence, so the exact labels and layout may differ in your installed version.
Can you change the 20-minute or five-tab defaults?
The available listing information confirms the defaults but does not provide a reliable, current options-screen sequence for changing the inactivity period, minimum number of open tabs, or start-up behavior. After installing, open Dustman’s own options from Firefox’s extensions management interface and verify which controls your version exposes before relying on a custom policy.

Do not assume that a setting described in an older review or screenshot exists in the current build. If no control is visible, keep the defaults, disable the extension, or remove it rather than guessing at a configuration.
What to check before enabling automatic closing
- Important work: save form entries, drafts, and other transient browser state before allowing automatic cleanup.
- Exceptions: pin tabs that must stay open, and remember that the sound exemption applies only while a tab is playing sound according to the listing.
- Recovery: confirm that the Dustman button is easy for you to find.
- Permission: decide whether the listed “Access browser tabs” permission fits your trust model.
- Timing: the 20-minute threshold is the starting default, not evidence that every workflow will tolerate automatic closure.
Version and compatibility limits
The listing retrieved on 28 September 2026 showed version 2.1.1resigned1, a size of 30.33 kB, an MIT license, and a last-updated date of 25 April 2024. Those details do not establish compatibility with every current Firefox release or operating system. Confirm that Firefox offers the extension for your installation and test it with non-critical tabs first.

Use extra caution
Choose manual tab management instead if you regularly leave silent, unpinned tabs open for longer than 20 minutes because they contain unfinished work, reference material, or unsaved form data. The listing does not promise a confirmation prompt before closure.
