Auracast is Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast audio: one compatible transmitter sends an announced stream that many compatible earbuds, headphones, hearing aids, or venue receivers can tune into. A phone may help you discover and select a broadcast, but it is usually the controller—not the device carrying the audio to every listener.

The important catch is compatibility. Bluetooth 5.2 or newer does not automatically mean Auracast. You need explicit LE Audio broadcast support, including the Public Broadcast Profile (PBP), on the transmitter and receiver, plus compatible firmware or operating-system support.

What Auracast actually is

Think of Auracast as radio built on Bluetooth LE Audio. A transmitter announces one or more broadcasts, and receivers in range tune to the stream a listener chooses. That differs from conventional Bluetooth audio, where a source creates an individual connection with each playback device.

Bluetooth SIG describes the architecture this way: “With Auracast™ broadcast audio, there is no one-to-one relationship between the transmitter and each receiver.” Any number of compatible receivers can join the same broadcast without the transmitter allocating another individual audio connection for each one. “Any number” still means any number within the transmitter’s practical coverage and subject to building conditions, receiver quality, and local installation design; it is not an unlimited-distance promise.

The three roles in a typical setup

  • Transmitter: the TV, phone, laptop, sound system, or installed venue equipment that sends the broadcast.
  • Assistant: often a phone that scans for broadcasts, displays their names, and helps the user select one. It supplies discovery and control.
  • Receiver: Auracast-capable earbuds, headphones, hearing aids, or a dedicated receiver that actually listens to the broadcast.

Once a receiver has joined, the assistant does not necessarily carry the audio. Bluetooth SIG’s February 2025 paper puts it plainly: “Unlike previous Bluetooth audio solutions, your smartphone does not take part in receiving the Auracast™ audio.”

What you can do with Auracast

Share one personal audio source

A compatible phone or other source can broadcast audio for a group. Google describes Android group sharing through a QR-code scan or Fast Pair tap, including shared listening and “silent disco” scenarios. Everyone still needs a compatible receiver, and the exact feature depends on the phone, receiver, and software version.

Listen to TVs in public places

Airports, gyms, waiting rooms, sports bars, and transit centers can broadcast audio from otherwise-silent public TVs. A visitor selects the venue’s stream on a compatible device instead of turning up the room speakers.

Hear announcements and program audio at venues

Conference centers, theaters, cinemas, lecture halls, places of worship, and airport terminals can transmit public-address or program audio directly to visitors’ own listening devices. A venue could publish separate streams for different languages or programs.

Assistive listening

Hearing devices can serve as Auracast receivers while a phone or another assistant helps the wearer find and select a stream. Bluetooth SIG says Auracast is a standards-based radio-frequency approach recognized under the ADA’s performance-based Assistive Listening Systems framework. That description is not individual legal advice: venues should assess the requirements that apply to their specific installation.

One Bluetooth SIG February 2025 paper reports a demonstration in which one transmitter covered all 1,085 seats in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. That is evidence from one hall and installation, not a universal range or coverage guarantee.

Does your device support Auracast?

Check the exact model’s specifications, firmware notes, and operating-system documentation for Auracast, LE Audio broadcast, or Public Broadcast Profile (PBP). Do not infer support from a Bluetooth-version number alone. Auracast depends on Bluetooth Core features introduced in version 5.2, but a product labeled Bluetooth 5.2, 5.3, or 5.4 may omit the required broadcast role.

Phone and Android support

Google’s compatibility notice names selected devices rather than promising support across all Android phones. It lists Pixel 8 series and newer, Samsung flagship models released since 2023 (including Galaxy S23, S24, S25 and Z Fold5, Fold6, and Fold7), and selected Xiaomi and POCO models. The list is time-sensitive. Google also says both the phone and headphones must support LE Audio, so a supported phone paired with ordinary Bluetooth headphones is not enough.

Hearing-aid compatibility

In an announcement dated March 13, 2025, Google described LE Audio-compatible hearing aids from GN Hearing and Starkey working with Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI 7 and Android 15, or Pixel 9 devices running the Android 16 beta, to tune into broadcasts from compatible TV streamers or venues. The announcement also described QR-code connection on Pixel 9 under those conditions. These combinations should not be generalized to every hearing aid, phone, or Android release.

Use the Bluetooth SIG directory carefully

The Bluetooth SIG product directory can help identify products by Auracast role, including receivers. SIG calls the directory informative and notes that availability can change, so confirm the current manufacturer listing, supported role, firmware, and regional availability before purchase. Qualified products using Auracast trademarks must go through the Bluetooth Qualification Process, but a generic Bluetooth badge or a proprietary sharing feature is not proof of Auracast interoperability.

Adding Auracast to a TV or other source

If your TV cannot transmit Auracast, a dedicated aftermarket transmitter may add the capability. Bluetooth SIG describes plug-and-play transmitters as an expected way to add broadcast support to TVs and other product categories.

  1. Identify the source output. Check whether the TV or device provides the connection the transmitter accepts, such as an optical digital output, analog audio output, HDMI-compatible audio path, or another explicitly supported input.
  2. Confirm the transmitter role. It must be an Auracast/LE Audio broadcast transmitter, not merely a conventional Bluetooth transmitter that creates one-to-one pairings.
  3. Check receiver requirements. Your earbuds, headphones, or hearing aids must support Auracast reception and the relevant software version.
  4. Configure and name the broadcast. Follow the transmitter’s setup instructions, then use the assistant or receiver’s broadcast scanner to select it.
  5. Test the complete path. Verify that the TV output is active, the broadcast is visible, and the receiver remains in range in the rooms where it will be used.

A transmitter cannot make non-Auracast headphones compatible. It only supplies the broadcast; the receiving device still needs the LE Audio broadcast capability.

Choosing equipment by job

Goal What you need Checks before buying
Listen personally An Auracast receiver: earbuds, headphones, hearing aids, or a dedicated receiver Explicit receiver/PBP support, current firmware, phone-assistant compatibility, and regional availability
Broadcast from a TV An Auracast transmitter built into the TV or a compatible external transmitter Source input, transmitter role, broadcast controls, and receiver compatibility
Use a phone as an assistant A phone with broadcast discovery and selection support The phone’s model and OS, plus LE Audio support in the receiving headphones or hearing aids
Equip a venue Installed transmitters, configured streams, and optional venue-provided receivers Coverage design, accessibility obligations, languages/programs, maintenance, and local availability

For a venue, installed systems can serve classrooms, corporate boardrooms, arenas, transport hubs, and other spaces. Auri’s 2025 guide describes venue-provided receivers as one deployment option; that is commercial infrastructure rather than a consumer accessory.

How Auracast differs from ordinary Bluetooth audio

  • Connection model: ordinary Bluetooth audio is generally one source-to-device pairing; Auracast is one broadcast that multiple receivers can join.
  • Discovery: Auracast broadcasts are announced for selection, often through an assistant phone or a receiver interface.
  • Phone involvement: a phone may control discovery, but the receiver can listen directly to the broadcast.
  • Scale: adding listeners does not require the transmitter to create another individual audio stream, although range and radio conditions still limit practical coverage.
  • Compatibility: both ends need the right LE Audio broadcast implementation; a newer Bluetooth label alone is insufficient.

Common compatibility mistakes

“My device says Bluetooth 5.2, so it must work.”

Bluetooth 5.2 is a prerequisite-era capability, not a complete feature guarantee. Look for explicit Auracast, LE Audio broadcast, and PBP support for the exact model.

“My phone found the broadcast, so my headphones will play it.”

Discovery support and receiver support are separate. The headphones or hearing aids must themselves be Auracast receivers.

“A conventional Bluetooth TV adapter is the same thing.”

Many adapters create a private, one-to-one link. Choose a product identified as an Auracast/LE Audio broadcast transmitter and verify its input connection.

A practical buying and setup checklist

  • Define whether you need a transmitter, receiver, assistant, or an installed venue system.
  • Verify explicit Auracast or LE Audio broadcast support on every relevant device.
  • Check PBP support, firmware, operating-system version, and the exact model—not just the product family.
  • Match physical inputs and outputs when adding a TV transmitter.
  • Confirm the feature is available in your country and through your preferred retailer or installer.
  • For hearing aids, verify the manufacturer’s supported phone and OS combinations.
  • For venues, plan coverage and accessibility with the installation requirements that apply locally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any number of people listen to one Auracast broadcast?

The broadcast architecture allows many in-range compatible receivers to join without a separate transmitter connection for each listener. Practical capacity and coverage still depend on the installation and radio environment.

Do I need a phone to listen?

Not necessarily. A phone often provides the easiest discovery and selection interface, but a compatible receiver can listen directly once the broadcast is selected.

Can Auracast work with my existing Bluetooth earbuds?

Only if the exact earbuds model supports LE Audio broadcast reception (including the required PBP implementation). Ordinary Bluetooth pairing support does not establish Auracast compatibility.
