Aura 4.0 is the Rust rewrite of Aura, an Arch Linux package manager that supplements Pacman with tools for building and managing packages from the Arch User Repository (AUR). The 4.x series began in 2024, but Aura 4.0 is not the latest release listed on the project’s releases page: the page includes 4.2.0. Check the official release list for the current version before installing.
What Aura does
Aura accepts Pacman operations and adds workflows focused on AUR packages. Its -A operation handles AUR packages; other documented features include package-state snapshots with -B, downgrades with -C, package validation with check, dependency analysis with deps, orphan management, and package-log interaction. Aura also maintains its own configuration and cache, and uses the Faur metadata server for some package lookups. Aura is intended for Arch Linux. The installation guide says it should also work on Arch derivatives such as Manjaro, but is not useful on other Linux distributions. Read the installation guide for the project’s platform guidance.
Why Aura was rewritten in Rust
Aura began as a Haskell project. The project identifies the Rust port as the 4.x series, released in 2024. In its FAQ, maintainer Colin Woodbury lists six reasons for the move: Rust’s existing alpm bindings, easier installation, more potential contributors, smaller binaries, an improved command-line interface and --help output, and better performance. He also cautions that these goals could have been pursued in Haskell; he simply did not want to do so.

Woodbury’s 2024 release announcement describes Aura as “much more performant,” with “a 4x smaller binary” and easier installation. Those are the maintainer’s claims, not results from a cited independent benchmark or study. The project’s FAQ explains his rationale, and the release page provides the version history.
What Aura 3 users need to change
Aura 4 changes several assumptions from the Haskell-era version. Before upgrading, review the Aura 3-to-4 migration guide, especially if you rely on a custom configuration or scripted flags.

Privilege handling
For administrative work, Aura 4 no longer needs to be launched with sudo. Run Aura as your user; it prompts for elevated privileges when they are needed. This is a change from the older workflow and helps keep ordinary package builds under your account.
Build user and directory
Normal builds run as your user and use ~/.cache/aura/builds/ by default, replacing the previous /tmp/ location. If Aura itself is run as root, the migration guide says builds take place under /tmp/ as nobody.

Configuration file
The former /etc/aura.conf custom format is replaced by a per-user TOML file at ~/.config/aura/config.toml. Generate a fresh configuration with:
aura conf --gen > ~/.config/aura/config.tomlReview the generated file and reapply settings you need in the new format rather than carrying over the old file unchanged.

Flags, script output, and language settings

The migration guide invites reports of older behavior that stopped working but is not covered there, so its list should not be treated as an exhaustive account of every compatibility difference.

The project documents several ways to install Aura. Choose based on whether you want the tagged package, the development branch, a prebuilt x86_64 binary, or a manual source install; the documentation does not establish a performance ranking among these options.

The project recommends its tagged aura AUR package. Consult the installation documentation for prerequisites and route-specific instructions.
First checks after installation
The README recommends running Aura’s validation command and generating a configuration file. A straightforward first-run sequence is:
- Run
aura checkto validate the installation. - Generate the per-user configuration with
aura conf --gen > ~/.config/aura/config.toml. - Run Aura commands as your regular user; allow Aura to request elevation for operations that need it.
For a current-version decision, use the official releases page rather than assuming that 4.0 remains the newest 4.x release. At the time represented by that page’s documented release notes, it listed 4.2.0 above 4.1.0 and 4.0.x; those notes say 4.1.0 added libalpm 16 support and 4.2.0 added an elevator setting for choosing a privilege-elevation program. When that setting is unset, Aura attempts sudo, doas, and run0. Release status can change, so confirm the version and notes on the official release page.
