GitHub’s announcement that “The GitHub Campus Expert application for the August 2021 generation is officially open” referred to a historical application round published on August 9, 2021. Applications closed on August 29, 2021, and applicant updates were scheduled for September 13, 2021; those dates have passed.
What the August 2021 announcement covered
GitHub Education presented Campus Experts as a program for students who build or grow technical communities on campus. It described community-leadership training and resources intended to help participants organize events and engage fellow students.
The announcement specifically named event stickers and cheat sheets among the resources. These were program benefits, not products applicants were expected to purchase.
GitHub’s August 2021 post said the program had grown from a small, handpicked group in 2016 into a global community of student leaders from more than 35 countries. That figure was reported by GitHub in 2021 and should not be treated as a current total.

Are you eligible for the program?
For the August 2021 generation, the announcement listed these requirements:
- You were at least 18 years old.
- You had held a GitHub account for at least six months.
- You were enrolled in a post-secondary formal education institution.
These are the historical criteria stated in that announcement. They do not establish the requirements for any later or current Campus Experts application.

What changed in the application questions
GitHub said the questions had changed since the February 2021 round in response to applicant feedback. The revised prompts were described as more descriptive and clearer, asking applicants to explain how Campus Experts benefits could help them strengthen their communities, achieve goals and organize welcoming experiences.

The post offered preparation guidance rather than guaranteed selection criteria:
- Review the program. Read the mission, benefits and participant stories so you understand what Campus Experts is designed to support.
- Identify one community challenge. Explain a specific issue affecting your campus or student community and how program resources could help address it.
- Describe your community precisely. Show what makes the community unique instead of relying on broad statements about student interest.
- Plan a welcoming experience. Connect your goals to practical ways of organizing inclusive events or engaging newcomers.
- Speak with a participant. GitHub suggested using GitHub Global Campus to find a nearby Campus Expert and ask about that person’s experience.
Is the application open now?
No conclusion about current availability, eligibility rules or program resources can be drawn from the August 2021 announcement. Anyone seeking to apply today should verify the latest information on GitHub’s official Campus Experts or GitHub Education pages before relying on these historical details.
