Audacity 4.0.1, announced September 30, 2026, says it fixes two specific problems: project corruption after a failed save and an AppImage that failed to install or start on some Linux distributions. Those are release-note claims, not a guarantee for every damaged project or Linux setup. The official listing provides separate x86_64 and AArch64 AppImages.
How do I fix Audacity project corruption after a failed save?
Audacity’s 4.0.1 release notes state, “Fixed project corruption after a failed save.” The notes do not describe a recovery procedure, explain every cause of failed saves, or establish that every corrupted project can be recovered by installing the update. If a project is already damaged, preserve an untouched copy before attempting repairs or opening it in another version.
- Make a separate copy of the affected project. Keep the original unchanged; use the copy for any recovery attempts.
- Check the Audacity version. If you are running an earlier version, consult the official Audacity release listing for 4.0.1 and its release information.
- Try the copied project in 4.0.1. The release note says the failed-save corruption issue was fixed, but does not promise recovery of files damaged before the update.
- If it still will not open, record the exact error and preserve the copy. The release materials do not specify further recovery steps, so avoid assuming that repeated save attempts will repair the project.
The 4.0.1 notes also list fixes for clips being messed up when converting .aup3 projects and for problems opening projects and files whose names or folders contain non-ASCII characters. These are separate fixes; they do not establish that every project-opening or conversion problem has the same cause.
Why won’t the Audacity AppImage install or start on Linux?
The 4.0.1 notes say, “Fixed the AppImage failing to install or start on some Linux distributions.” They do not identify every affected distribution or version, nor do they guarantee that the AppImage will run on all Linux systems.

Choose the asset for your processor architecture
The Audacity 4.0.1 release listing shows two AppImage assets, both dated September 30, 2026:

These sizes and architectures are listed for the 4.0.1 files; choose the build matching your system rather than treating the two assets as interchangeable. If the AppImage still fails
- Confirm that the file is the official 4.0.1 AppImage and that its architecture matches your Linux system.
- Record your distribution and version, the asset you downloaded, and the exact installation or startup error.
- Consult current Audacity release documentation and seek support with those details if the problem persists. The release note does not specify distribution-specific workarounds.
Reports or discussion about an individual setup are not enough to diagnose all Linux AppImage failures. A failure that continues on 4.0.1 does not by itself show whether the cause is the distribution, the selected architecture, or another issue.
What else does Audacity 4.0.1 say it fixes?
Besides the two headline fixes, the release listing names assorted crashes, effect behavior, export file naming, and Linux recognition of uppercase .WAV extensions, among other changes. Consult the official Audacity 4.0.1 listing for the full release notes rather than assuming the headline issues are the only changes.

Check compatibility before upgrading from Audacity 3
Audacity’s Audacity 4.0 compatibility notes list several Audacity 3 features as unavailable in Audacity 4.0, including Time Tracks, Note/MIDI tracks, the Mixer, Macro Manager and scripting pipe, VAMP and LADSPA plugin hosting, and Play-at-speed. The notes also mention missing exporting/rendering features, analyzers, and effects. This compatibility information is specific to the documented 4.0 state; it does not establish whether each feature is available in 4.0.1 or a later release. Check the current Audacity documentation before upgrading if your workflow depends on one of them.
Earlier Audacity 4.0.0 Beta 4 notes advised beta users to expect bugs and keep project backups. That is a general precaution from the beta period, not evidence that the 4.0.1 failed-save fix is defective. Keeping separate project copies remains a sensible safeguard when working with important audio projects.
