An effective API security assessment is more than running a scanner: establish the authorized scope, inventory endpoints and versions, test representative requests with approved identities, and document exactly what was and was not exercised. Use the OWASP API Security Top 10 2023 as a risk checklist—not as proof that a clean scan means an API is secure.

What an API security skills assessment should establish

A useful assessment should show which API surface was examined, which authentication contexts and identities were available, what test classes were performed, and what evidence supports each finding. APIs expose application logic and may handle sensitive data, so tests need to consider both access controls and the way the API processes requests. OWASP’s API Security Project provides guidance for builders, breakers, and defenders.

Keep the work within explicit permission and approved scope. Use only authorized targets and tokens; cross-user authorization tests require distinct identities that you are permitted to use.

Use the OWASP API Security Top 10 2023 as a coverage map

The 2023 edition gives an organized set of risk areas. It is a framework for planning and reporting tests, not a claim that every API has every risk or that checking each category once proves safety.

Category Assessment focus
API1:2023 — Broken Object Level Authorization Check whether access decisions are enforced for the specific object a request addresses, especially when users supply object IDs.
API2:2023 — Broken Authentication Assess how the API establishes and validates caller identity.
API3:2023 — Broken Object Property Level Authorization Check whether callers can read or change object properties beyond their permitted access.
API4:2023 — Unrestricted Resource Consumption Assess whether API operations can consume resources without appropriate constraints.
API5:2023 — Broken Function Level Authorization Check whether callers can invoke functions they are not authorized to use.
API6:2023 — Unrestricted Access to Sensitive Business Flows Assess whether sensitive business flows can be accessed or abused without suitable controls.
API7:2023 — Server Side Request Forgery Check whether API behavior can cause the server to make unintended requests.
API8:2023 — Security Misconfiguration Look for insecure configuration in the API and its supporting environment.
API9:2023 — Improper Inventory Management Check whether API versions and endpoints are known, maintained, and within the intended scope.
API10:2023 — Unsafe Consumption of APIs Assess risks in how the application consumes other APIs.

These names and categories are from the OWASP API Security Top 10 2023. Treat authorization as a set of separate questions: a successful login does not establish that a user can access only permitted objects, properties, or functions.

Build coverage before testing

1. Establish the boundary

Record the target, approved scope, test window if applicable, and any exclusions. Confirm which environments and accounts are authorized. Do not infer permission to test other users’ data or systems from access to one API endpoint.

2. Assemble the endpoint and version inventory

Use an available API specification or known endpoint inventory as the starting map. Record the versions in scope and note any routes whose status or ownership is unclear. Black-box discovery can be a quick starting point, but it is weaker than testing against known endpoints: routes that discovery misses cannot be meaningfully covered by tests directed at the inventory.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Identify available authentication contexts

Document whether testing is unauthenticated, authenticated as one authorized identity, or conducted with multiple authorized identities. For cross-user checks, use distinct approved accounts and record which identity made each request. A single identity cannot establish whether one user can improperly access another user’s objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Prepare representative request shapes

Use realistic request methods, paths, headers, and bodies for the operations in scope. Guessed or incomplete requests may fail for reasons unrelated to security and may not exercise the behavior that matters. OWASP’s API Security Testing Framework overview and testing guidelines describe black-box discovery as a quick but less capable starting point and explain the value of endpoint knowledge, authenticated identities, and realistic requests.

Test authorization as distinct checks

Object access: API1

For operations that address a user-supplied object identifier, verify that the API enforces access for the object itself. Where authorized, compare behavior across identities and objects that each account is permitted to use. Record the request identity, target object, response, and expected access boundary. Do not treat an untested identifier or route as covered simply because another object request succeeded securely.

Property access: API3

Check whether the caller can read or modify individual properties beyond their permissions. Exercise representative request and response shapes, and distinguish a denied operation from one where a sensitive field is silently returned or an unauthorized field change is accepted.

Function access: API5

Check whether the authenticated identity is allowed to invoke the requested function, not just whether it can authenticate to the API. Include relevant privileged or sensitive operations only when they are within the authorized scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication: API2

Assess whether the API correctly establishes and validates identity. Keep this distinct from the authorization checks above: a valid credential is not evidence that the identity is permitted to use every object, property, or function it can address.

Combine automation with manual coverage

The OWASP API Security Testing Framework describes automated cases mapped to the 2023 Top 10, with additional areas that include GraphQL, gRPC, mutual TLS, LLM/chatbot, and general injection. Its overview reports validation against crAPI, an intentionally vulnerable API. That is a reported framework capability and validation context, not a guarantee of complete detection against a real target.

Use automated output as evidence of what the framework actually discovered and exercised. Manual review can address route, identity, and request-shape gaps or risks that the configured tests do not cover. The framework overview does not provide a head-to-head detection benchmark, so do not translate its feature list into a comparative effectiveness claim.

Write up findings and coverage limitations

A finding should let another authorized reviewer understand and reproduce the observation without implying more coverage than the test supports. For each issue, preserve enough context to connect the result to the endpoint, identity, request, and observed response.

  • Scope: target and approved boundaries.
  • Surface: endpoint and version inventory used, including known omissions or uncertain routes.
  • Identity: authentication context and which authorized identities were exercised.
  • Test method: test classes performed and whether they used discovery, a supplied inventory, manual review, automation, or a combination.
  • Evidence: reproducible request and response details, with sensitive information handled appropriately.
  • Limitations: routes, identities, request shapes, risk categories, or integrations not tested.

Separate a vulnerability claim from a coverage statement. If a test finds no flaw, say what it actually examined. A negative result for one route, identity, or request shape does not establish that other combinations are safe. OWASP’s testing guidance supports treating endpoint knowledge, authentication context, and realistic request shapes as material to test relevance.

Choose an assessment approach by the coverage you need

Approach What it can establish Important limitation
Black-box discovery A quick starting view of endpoints discoverable from the target. May miss routes and does not by itself establish coverage for authenticated contexts or realistic request bodies.
Testing against a supplied endpoint inventory Tests can be directed at known routes and versions. An inventory can be incomplete or stale; unlisted endpoints remain outside demonstrated coverage.
Testing with one authorized identity Can exercise behavior available to that identity. Cannot establish cross-user access boundaries that require distinct identities.
Testing with multiple authorized identities Enables cross-user authorization checks where permitted. Results apply only to the identities, objects, endpoints, and request shapes actually exercised.
Automated cases Can provide repeatable checks for supported test areas and mappings. Output is limited to what the framework discovers and exercises; a clean result is not proof of security or completeness.
Manual review Can examine contextual authorization decisions and gaps in automated coverage. Coverage must still be documented; an unrecorded review is difficult to reproduce or assess.

These are assessment dimensions, not a head-to-head performance ranking: the cited OWASP materials do not establish comparative detection rates.
