A custom enrichment sidecar can add live evidence, runbook links, or dashboard context to Alertmanager notifications: configure Alertmanager’s generic webhook receiver to POST its JSON notification to the sidecar, then have the sidecar enrich and forward it. This is an integration pattern you build—not a built-in Alertmanager feature. Alertmanager documents the webhook boundary and payload, but not the sidecar’s retry or delivery guarantees.

How the Alertmanager-to-sidecar path works

Prometheus sends alerts to Alertmanager, which groups and routes them to receivers based on labels. Receivers can be built-in integrations or a generic webhook. Alertmanager templates notifications using Go templates. The documented webhook interface makes a custom service a natural place to add context before forwarding a notification to another destination.

The flow is:

  1. Prometheus sends alerts to Alertmanager. Alertmanager groups and routes them according to its configuration.
  2. Alertmanager POSTs a notification to the sidecar. The generic webhook receiver sends JSON to its configured endpoint.
  3. The sidecar adds context and forwards the result. It might look up current evidence in another system, attach a relevant dashboard or runbook link, and format a message for the destination.

The first two steps use documented Alertmanager behavior; enrichment and forwarding are the custom service’s responsibilities. See the configuration reference and notification template reference.

What the webhook payload gives the sidecar

A standard notification is a grouped envelope, not just a single alert. Its notification-level fields include the version, group key, count of truncated alerts, overall status, receiver, group and common labels, common annotations, and Alertmanager’s external URL. Each alert object includes its status, labels, annotations, start and end timestamps, generator URL, and fingerprint. The exact fields and examples are documented in the notification template reference and notification examples.

Alertmanager also allows a custom webhook payload template. If you choose one, its output must be valid JSON accepted by the receiving endpoint. A custom payload can make a downstream integration simpler, but it shifts responsibility for selecting and maintaining the required fields into the template.

Keep alert identity separate from added context

Enrichment should explain an alert, not quietly change what alert it is. Preserve the status, labels, timestamps, generator URL, and fingerprint when passing notifications downstream, unless the receiving system has an explicit mapping requirement. The fingerprint is useful for correlating repeated notifications, and the generator URL points back to the alert’s source.

Labels are used to identify and deduplicate alert instances. Annotations are better suited to explanatory material such as a summary, description, or runbook URL. This division helps prevent added evidence from changing identity or grouping. See the Alerts API documentation.

Use annotations for known context

If a summary, description, or runbook link is known when you define the alert, put it in an annotation. That keeps stable explanatory context close to the rule and within Alertmanager’s normal notification model.

Use the sidecar for context that must be looked up

A sidecar is useful when the evidence is dynamic or comes from another system—for example, a current diagnostic result or an evidence link generated for the incident. This is an architectural choice, not a special Alertmanager capability. Add the resulting material to downstream message fields or annotations without casually altering identity labels.

Choose the simplest place to add context

Option Best fit Trade-off
Rule annotations Context known when the alert is defined, such as a summary, description, or runbook URL. Not suited to evidence that must be retrieved dynamically from another system.
Standard webhook payload A downstream service can consume Alertmanager’s broad notification envelope. The receiver must handle grouped notifications and the fields it contains.
Custom webhook payload template The receiving service needs a tailored JSON shape. The template must produce valid JSON and be maintained as receiver needs or behavior evolve.
Enrichment sidecar Context must be obtained dynamically or the destination needs custom forwarding. You own the enrichment, forwarding, and operational behavior; Alertmanager’s webhook documentation does not define those guarantees.
Dedicated receiver integration Alertmanager already provides an integration that meets the destination’s needs. Less custom code may be needed, but suitability depends on the available integration and required context.

Alertmanager documents multiple integrations alongside generic webhook support in its configuration reference. Alerta, for example, documents an inbound webhook integration for Prometheus Alertmanager in its webhook integration guide.

Plan delivery behavior instead of assuming it

The webhook payload documentation specifies the request format, not the full delivery contract between Alertmanager and a custom sidecar. It does not establish the sidecar’s retry policy, timeout behavior, idempotency, dead-letter handling, or what happens when enrichment is unavailable. These properties depend on the actual implementation and deployment.

For a reliable integration, define and verify how the sidecar handles a slow or unavailable evidence source, a failed downstream send, duplicate notifications, and malformed or unexpected input. As engineering recommendations—not Alertmanager guarantees—use bounded enrichment calls and an explicit fallback, such as forwarding the alert without added evidence when a lookup fails. Preserve a stable identifier such as the alert fingerprint so downstream consumers can correlate repeated notifications.

Alertmanager’s Alerts API documentation says clients submitting alerts should resend firing alerts regularly until resolution. That describes client-to-Alertmanager behavior; it is not an end-to-end guarantee for delivery from Alertmanager’s webhook to the sidecar. See the Alerts API documentation.

Secure the webhook and the enrichment path

Alert data and the URLs added to notifications may expose operational details. Prometheus warns that anyone with access to the Alertmanager HTTP endpoint can access its data and can create or resolve alerts. Restrict access to Alertmanager and the sidecar, and use authentication and transport security appropriate to the deployment. The Prometheus security model explains the risks around access to its HTTP endpoints.

Deployment notes for managed Prometheus

A managed Prometheus service can still be relevant to this pattern if its Alertmanager configuration can reach the sidecar and the service exposes the required Alertmanager functionality. Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus documents Alertmanager API paths in its user guide. Availability, networking, and configuration options depend on the service and deployment; check the vendor’s current documentation for those details.
