Atlassian is shifting Compass’s catalog and scorecard capabilities toward DX, while framing developer experience (DevEx) as a broader effort to find and remove friction in software work. For Compass users, the practical issue is migration: Atlassian’s support guidance recommends DX Fabric for component tracking and says Compass support is planned to end on December 31, 2027. That date is a published plan, not a guarantee; check Atlassian’s latest guidance and your contract before scheduling a move.

What does Atlassian mean by developer experience?

Atlassian uses developer experience to describe developers’ lived experience of getting software work done—not simply their output or the tools they use. The company’s framing centers on friction, feedback, cognitive load, and the ability to stay in a productive flow. That makes DevEx both a way to understand obstacles in engineering work and a proposed route to improving them.

This framing is broader than a software catalog. A catalog can show what components exist and who owns them; a DevEx program also asks where work is getting stuck and how developers experience the systems and processes around it. Atlassian’s strategic claim is that finding those obstacles can help teams improve software delivery. That claim describes the company’s approach, not independent proof that a particular Atlassian product produces better outcomes.

What is Compass, and what is changing?

Compass is Atlassian’s developer portal for cataloging software components and connecting them with owners, teams, and engineering practices. Its catalog and scorecards help teams organize information about their software landscape and assess practices associated with components.

Atlassian Support says Compass catalog and scorecard functionality is transitioning to the DX app. Its migration guide points to DX Fabric for component tracking and describes DevEx Cloud as the broader developer productivity platform. In other words, the shift is not just a renamed portal: Atlassian is placing Compass-style catalog work within a wider product story about measuring and improving developer experience.

Offering or capability Role in Atlassian’s guidance What to evaluate
Compass Developer portal with a component catalog and scorecards; support is planned to end December 31, 2027, according to Atlassian Support. Existing catalog structure, scorecards, configuration, dependencies, and contract timing.
DX Fabric Recommended by Atlassian’s migration guide for component tracking. How components are discovered, imported, related to dependencies, and matched to existing configuration.
DevEx Cloud Described by Atlassian as the wider developer productivity platform; Atlassian says it adds self-reported experience metrics. Whether the team needs developer feedback alongside catalog and operational or productivity data.

The table reflects Atlassian’s product descriptions and migration guidance, not an independent feature-parity assessment. Confirm current capabilities, commercial terms, and configuration compatibility with Atlassian before committing to a migration plan.

How do I migrate from Compass to DX?

Atlassian’s support guide covers catalog and scorecard migration, config-as-code, auto-import, and dependencies. Those areas indicate what teams should inventory and validate; the exact migration path and compatibility depend on the team’s Compass setup.

  1. Confirm timing. Review the current Atlassian Compass-to-DX migration guide and your contract. The guide says Compass access will expire at contract end or when support ends, with support planned to end on December 31, 2027.
  2. Inventory what Compass contains. Record the components, ownership and team relationships, scorecards, dependencies, and any config-as-code your organization uses. Identify which catalog information is still actively maintained and who is responsible for it.
  3. Map the destination. Use Atlassian’s guidance on DX Fabric for component tracking to determine how existing components and relationships should be represented. Check the guide’s auto-import and dependency guidance against your actual sources and structure.
  4. Validate scorecards and configuration. Compare existing scorecards and config-as-code with the destination’s supported setup. The migration guide discusses these areas, but do not assume every configuration or behavior transfers unchanged; verify compatibility for your implementation.
  5. Decide whether to add experience measurement. If the goal extends beyond cataloging and scorecards, assess whether DevEx Cloud’s self-reported experience metrics address questions your team needs answered. Choose measures that complement, rather than stand in for, operational evidence.
  6. Test before relying on the new setup. Check that imported components, owners, dependencies, and scorecard-related information are accurate, and confirm that the teams who maintain the catalog can use the destination as intended.

Because support timing and migration details can change, use Atlassian’s current documentation and your contract—not an old announcement or a planning date copied into a migration schedule—as the operational authority.

How much time do developers lose to inefficiencies?

In a January 14, 2025 article summarizing its developer-experience research, Atlassian reported that 97% of developers lose significant time to inefficiencies. The more specific measure in that article was that 69% said they lose at least eight hours a week—an amount Atlassian equated to 20% of their time. Atlassian also reported that 63% said developer experience matters when deciding whether to stay in their current jobs.

These figures are company-reported survey findings, not independently validated productivity measurements. Atlassian’s 2024 State of Developer Experience Report says it worked with Wakefield Research and DX and surveyed more than 2,100 developers and managers across industries in February 2024. The later January 2025 article reports related findings, but the survey context should not be mistaken for a universal estimate that applies equally to every team or organization.

Atlassian’s 2025 article also reports a gap between engineering leaders’ perceptions and developers’ experiences. Its practical argument is that leaders should ask developers about friction rather than infer the experience from high-level indicators alone. Atlassian summarized that idea with: “The best strategy to understand how to improve the developer experience is also the simplest.”

Is AI actually improving developer productivity?

Atlassian’s answer is that AI use by itself is not enough to establish improved productivity. In its September 18, 2025 announcement about a definitive agreement to acquire DX, Atlassian presented DX as engineering intelligence for measuring, benchmarking, and improving developer productivity. The announcement emphasized AI impact, qualitative and quantitative experience signals, and real-time insights into productivity and system health. It describes Atlassian’s strategy at that date; it does not establish the acquisition’s present status.

Atlassian’s January 2025 research article reported that two out of three developers had not yet seen significant productivity gains from AI tools. In a separate article about AI-native software development, Atlassian argues that useful context across work items, documentation, conversations, and code matters when AI agents operate in the software development lifecycle. CTO Taroon Mandhana put the company’s thesis this way: “The biggest bottleneck in AI software engineering isn’t model intelligence, it’s organizational context.”

How Atlassian’s DevEx story has evolved

February 2024: survey work on friction and satisfaction

Atlassian says its 2024 State of Developer Experience study was conducted with Wakefield Research and DX and included more than 2,100 developers and managers across industries. The stated focus was developer experience, friction, satisfaction, and productivity.

January 2025: survey findings become an improvement argument

Atlassian’s January 2025 coverage used reported time loss, retention concerns, and the AI productivity gap to argue for listening to developers and addressing friction. These figures are survey results as presented by Atlassian, not a guarantee of what a different workforce would report.

September 2025: DX becomes part of the announced strategy

Atlassian announced a definitive agreement to acquire DX and described DX as an engineering-intelligence offering. The announcement is a dated snapshot of the proposed transaction and strategy. Atlassian’s Q1 FY2026 shareholder letter is another historical snapshot: it said the companies would operate independently until closing at the time of that letter. Neither document alone establishes the transaction’s current status.

March 2026: DevEx applied beyond engineering

In a March 12, 2026 article, Atlassian extended its DevEx ideas to enterprise productivity, describing purpose, work, knowledge, and intelligence flows as organizational patterns. That is Atlassian’s broader viewpoint; it does not change the narrower, operational Compass-to-DX migration guidance for teams managing software components.

What should teams take from the shift?

For a team that mainly needs a maintained component catalog and scorecards, the immediate task is to understand how those functions and their configuration map into DX Fabric and the DX app. A team seeking a broader view of developer productivity should separately decide what evidence it needs, including whether self-reported feedback is useful alongside operational data. In either case, migration timing, compatibility, and terms should be confirmed against current Atlassian documentation and the team’s contract.
