There is no established age at which a baby can safely use a pool float. A float’s age label does not show that it prevents drowning: inflatable floats and seats can tip, leak, or let a child slip into the water. For an infant or toddler in a pool, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing touch supervision.
Why there is no safe-age cutoff for baby pool floats
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not give a general minimum age at which babies can safely use inflatable pool floats. Age ranges printed on a particular product are product guidance, not proof that the float prevents drowning or makes unsupervised use safe.
Inflatable toys and seats provide recreational buoyancy; they are not approved flotation protection. A floating seat can tip, and a baby can become trapped underwater. A neck float can allow a baby to slip through its opening if it is not inflated properly, develops an air leak, or becomes slippery. The AAP article Are Baby Neck Floats Safe to Use in the Tub or Pool?, last updated July 23, 2026, reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received 115 reports involving neck floats from January 2019 through January 2024, including two infant deaths and two injuries requiring hospitalization. These are reported incidents, not a rate of risk per user or use, and they concern neck floats rather than every type of pool float.
The same AAP article says the Food and Drug Administration warned parents not to use baby neck floats in 2022 and that the CPSC warned against buying or using the Otteroo neck float. For current product-specific status, consult the agencies’ current notices.

What actually keeps a baby safer in a pool
Stay close enough to touch
For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, actively supervising. The AAP calls this “touch supervision.” Never leave a baby alone in or near water, even briefly, or rely on another young child to supervise. A float does not change this requirement. Use a life jacket when flotation protection is needed
For open water, use a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, not an inflatable toy or float. The AAP notes that young children and weaker swimmers may also benefit from a life jacket at a pool. A life jacket is different from a float, must fit the child and suit the setting, and does not replace close adult supervision.

Keep lessons separate from float use
A float is not a swim lesson or a way to teach a baby to swim. The AAP does not recommend infant swim programs for babies under one year as a drowning-prevention measure because evidence that they reduce drowning risk is lacking. Parent-child water-play classes may help an infant become familiar with the pool, but the adult must remain close and actively supervise. Many children can begin lessons after their first birthday when they are ready; physical and developmental abilities, emotional maturity, interest, and prior exposure to water all matter. How to choose between a float, life jacket, and lessons
