As of October 2, 2026, AT&T and Apple acknowledge that a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on AT&T in the U.S. can lose cellular service, leaving owners unable to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data. Apple says iOS 27.0.1 and an AT&T carrier-settings update are intended to help prevent more cases—not restore service on phones that have already failed. Those devices need hardware replacement through Apple or AT&T.
What the AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max problem looks like
Owners have reported both persistent and intermittent loss of service. A phone may display SOS and fail to complete calls, texts, or mobile-data connections. The reports concern a subset of devices, not every iPhone 18 Pro Max using AT&T.
MacRumors reported the first complaints on September 25, 2026, including concerns about AT&T connectivity and eSIM provisioning. On October 1, AT&T texted some customers that affected phones might be unable to complete calls, texts, or data—including calls to 911—and urged them to install iOS 27.0.1.
Does iOS 27.0.1 fix a phone that has already lost service?
No, not according to Apple’s October 2 statement. Apple said iOS 27.0.1, released earlier that week, and a carrier-settings update being issued that day are meant to help prevent the issue from occurring. User reports cited by 9to5Mac and MacRumors said some phones that had already lost service remained unusable after updating.

The carrier-settings update was reported as version 72.1, up from 72.0.2. Apple’s statement describes the software and carrier update together as preventive; it does not say that updating is a repair for an affected device.
What to do if your phone is stuck in SOS or cannot connect
- If the phone still has service: Open Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27.0.1. Follow any prompt to install AT&T carrier settings.
- If service has already failed: Contact Apple Support, visit an Apple Store, or visit an AT&T location. Apple says an affected phone needs hardware replacement; AT&T also directs affected customers to Apple or AT&T stores for additional support.
- If you need emergency help: AT&T’s alert warned that some affected phones may be unable to complete calls to 911. If your phone cannot place a call, use another available phone to contact emergency services.
Apple and AT&T are both named support routes. The available information does not establish different replacement eligibility rules, warranty handling, or inventory at either provider, so ask the location you contact what it can offer. A newly purchased iPhone 18 Pro Max is not a proven technical fix for this incident; Apple’s stated remedy for an already affected phone is hardware replacement through its or AT&T’s support channels.

How many phones are affected, and what caused the failure?
Apple and AT&T have described the affected group as small, but neither has published a denominator, failure rate, or confirmed incident count. MacRumors reported thousands of user reports across Apple Support Community, Reddit, MacRumors Forums, and other platforms; that count of reports does not establish how many devices have failed.
The reporting concerns U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max units on AT&T. Reports distinguish the U.S. model, which uses a Qualcomm modem, from iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models sold outside the U.S., which were described as using Apple’s C2 modem. That hardware difference has not been confirmed as the cause, and the underlying cause remains unknown.

Apple’s statement, as reported October 2, is the clearest distinction for owners: update to reduce the chance of additional cases, but seek hardware replacement if the phone has already lost service.
