The ASUS RT-AX55 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with gigabit Ethernet and AiMesh support. Its specifications and independent review make it a reasonable option for an apartment, condo, or smaller single-story home, but its advertised wireless rates are not guaranteed internet speeds, and it omits features such as DFS channels, USB, and 160 MHz channel width. The practical verdict depends on your home, internet plan, and need for newer Wi-Fi features.
What the ASUS RT-AX55 offers
ASUS classifies the RT-AX55 as an AX1800 router. It uses two spatial streams on each of its two bands, with four external antennas and a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. The WAN and all four LAN ports are gigabit Ethernet.
| Specification | RT-AX55 |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi generation and bands | Wi-Fi 6; 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz |
| Maximum rated wireless link rate | 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz; 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz |
| Radio configuration | 2×2 transmit/receive on each band |
| Maximum channel width | Up to 80 MHz |
| Wired ports | One gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports |
| USB port | None, according to RTINGS |
| Processor and antennas | 1.5 GHz quad-core processor; four external antennas |
ASUS also lists OFDMA, beamforming, and 1024-QAM. The published 574 Mbps and 1201 Mbps figures are maximum rated wireless link rates, not a promise that a phone, laptop, or internet speed test will reach those numbers. Actual performance depends on the client device, distance, walls, interference, service plan, and network overhead; ASUS notes that environmental and network conditions affect throughput and coverage. See ASUS RT-AX55 specifications.

RTINGS reviewed the RT-AX55 on July 22, 2024, and updated its text and test bench on June 22, 2026, using Test Bench 0.9.1. It considers the router suitable for apartments, condos, and single-story homes, and reports performance it regards as suitable for internet connections up to about 700 Mbps. That is RTINGS’ assessment, not a guaranteed capacity for every home or device.
#1 Best Overall
- Maximum Range : 3000 Sq Ft.Processor : 1.5GHz quad-core processor.
- Next-Gen WiFi Standard - Supporting the latest WiFi standard 802.11AX (WiFi 6) and 80MHz bandwidth for better capacity and efficiency.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed - RT-AX55 supports 80MHz bandwidth and 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections. With a total networking speed of about 1800Mbps — 574 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1201 Mbps on the 5GHz band.
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency - Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
RTINGS describes coverage as potentially decent but dependent on the home, and wireless latency as adequate for ordinary use and non-competitive gaming. For competitive gaming or other latency-sensitive work, it recommends Ethernet for a more reliable connection. A wired connection also avoids making a wireless link the weak point between a device and router. Read RTINGS’ ASUS RT-AX55 review for its test context and judgments.
Features and setup flexibility
ASUS lists router, access point, repeater, media bridge, and AiMesh-node operating modes. Documented functions include guest networking, parental controls and internet schedules, WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personal security, traditional QoS, traffic monitoring, VPN client and server options, and configuration backup and restore. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities; their inclusion does not establish that every feature has been independently tested.

AiProtection and security features
ASUS says the RT-AX55 includes “lifetime free AiProtection Classic,” powered by Trend Micro, with automatic, regularly updated security signatures intended to protect devices and personal data from internet threats. This is ASUS’s description of the service, not an independent finding about its effectiveness. The ASUS product page describes the feature, and the RT-AX55 manual shows its network-protection controls; the manual’s interface examples are from older firmware.

AiMesh lets selected ASUS router models work together as a whole-home Wi-Fi system. If the RT-AX55 does not cover your home, adding a compatible ASUS router may be an option rather than replacing the primary router or buying a generic extender by default. Check compatibility for the particular model and firmware before purchasing. Building materials, room layout, and furnishings can affect coverage, as ASUS notes.

- Dual-band WiFi 7 speeds up to 3600 Mbps with MLO and 4K-QAM
- AI-powered Smart AiMesh boosts coverage up to 2000 ft2 and easy extendibility with compatible ASUS routers for seamless and secure whole home WiFi
- Four internal antennas and four high-power front-end modules eliminate WiFi dead zones
- 24/7 End-to-end protection with commercial-grade AiProtection and advanced VPNs
- Establish up to three SSIDs for parental controls and IoT devices with Smart Home Master Network
Limitations to weigh before buying
The RT-AX55 is Wi-Fi 6, not Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. Clients that support those newer standards cannot use them through this router. RTINGS also flags the lack of DFS support, USB, and 160 MHz bandwidth.
- No DFS support: The router cannot access DFS-only channels, which can limit channel choices in some congested environments.
- No 160 MHz channel width: Its listed channel width reaches 80 MHz, so it lacks that wider-channel option.
- No USB: There is no router USB port for USB-connected storage or other peripherals.
- No Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7: Those standards and their associated bands are not available through this Wi-Fi 6 router.
When comparing alternatives, look at Wi-Fi generation and bands, 5 GHz channel width and DFS support, wired port speed and count, USB availability, performance in a home similar to yours, mesh compatibility, firmware support, and current price. Which factors matter most depends on whether you need broader coverage, more channel options, wired capacity, or a newer Wi-Fi standard.
Rank #4
- New-Gen WiFi Standard - Supporting 802.11ax WiFi standard for better efficiency and throughput.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed - RT-AX3000S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections. With a total networking speed of about 3000Mbps — 574 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2402 Mbps on the 5GHz band.
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency - Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicating with multiple devices simultaneously
- Easy Extendable Network - Enjoy seamless roaming with rich, advanced features by adding any AiMesh-compatible router.
Firmware and ongoing security maintenance
ASUS’s support listing showed firmware version 3.0.0.4.386_53370, dated September 4, 2026, with release notes describing multiple security-related changes and recommending an upgrade. Firmware availability can vary by region and change over time, so treat that version as a dated listing rather than a permanent “latest” build. Check the ASUS RT-AX55 support page for the current firmware for your region and follow its instructions before updating.
