Keep integration tests focused: they take more setup and run time, so use them for boundaries where component interaction matters.
Choose the right test level
Unit tests: verify logic you control
A unit test exercises one unit of work, such as a method or handler, without depending on a live database, file system, or network service. Microsoft’s .NET testing guidance says unit tests should test only code within the developer’s control. Replace external dependencies with fakes or mocks where appropriate; these tests are generally faster than integration tests.
For Minimal API handlers that return IResult, Microsoft demonstrates testing the handler directly with xUnit and substituting an in-memory database for an external database. This is useful when the behavior under test is the handler’s decision-making rather than the full HTTP pipeline.
Integration tests: verify components working together
An integration test checks that two or more components work together. In an ASP.NET Core application, that may mean sending an HTTP request through the application pipeline and verifying its response, including relevant service or database behavior. Microsoft advises reserving integration tests for important infrastructure scenarios; when either a unit test or integration test can verify a behavior, prefer the unit test. See Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core integration testing guidance.

A focused integration suite might cover representative reads and writes through the configured data layer, plus important update or delete behavior. It need not repeat every method-level case already covered by unit tests.
Browser tests: verify user-visible flows
For a single-page application, browser automation can validate behavior that depends on an actual browser, such as a user flow across rendered UI and client-side code. Microsoft points to Playwright for .NET as an option for SPA browser testing. The guidance cited here does not prescribe a complete browser-test architecture, so choose the browser suite’s scope and setup based on the application rather than treating it as a replacement for unit and integration coverage.
Choose a test framework and platform
A test framework is the tool used to write tests; a test platform runs them and connects the results to IDEs or the command line. Microsoft’s .NET testing overview lists VSTest and Microsoft.Testing.Platform as platform choices, and MSTest, NUnit, TUnit, and xUnit.net as framework choices. Its overview does not establish one framework as universally best.
| Choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Test platform | Confirm support for the project’s target .NET version and the team’s IDE and CLI workflow. |
| Test framework | Compare team familiarity, migration cost, ecosystem integrations, and existing project conventions. |
| Runner and SDK packages | Check the framework’s official setup instructions for the chosen platform and target framework; package requirements can change. |
Microsoft’s overview says TUnit is built on Microsoft.Testing.Platform and does not support VSTest. It describes MSTest, NUnit, and xUnit.net as supporting both platforms. Verify current compatibility against the framework documentation before adopting version-specific package instructions.

Set up ASP.NET Core integration tests
The standard ASP.NET Core pattern uses a separate test project that references the application and the Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc.Testing package. WebApplicationFactory<TEntryPoint> boots the application into a TestServer and provides an HTTP client for requests and responses.
- Create a test project. Reference the application-under-test project and add
Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc.Testing, plus your chosen framework and runner packages. Configure the test project to use the Web SDK as described in Microsoft’s integration-test setup. - Make the entry point visible when needed. With minimal hosting, the generated
Programtype may need to be exposed to the test assembly. Microsoft documentsInternalsVisibleToor a public partialProgramdeclaration as options. - Create a factory and client. Instantiate
WebApplicationFactory<Program>, then create a client from the factory. The factory creates the test host and client for sending requests. - Arrange a request and assert the result. Send an HTTP request through the client, then check the status code, headers, and response content relevant to the scenario.
- Keep test configuration isolated. Set a test environment and test data explicitly. The documented integration-test setup defaults to
Developmentwhen the SUT environment is unset; do not let tests accidentally rely on production services or data.
Microsoft’s sample uses xUnit, xunit.runner.visualstudio, and AngleSharp. In the setup described there, xunit.runner.visualstudio version 2.4.2 or later also requires a reference to Microsoft.NET.Test.Sdk. Treat that as a version-specific compatibility note, not a universal package list; check the current setup guidance for your target framework.
Customize the test host safely
A test host should represent the application behavior you need to verify while remaining isolated from production resources. Use factory customization when the test needs alternate settings, dependencies, or authentication behavior. The factory can adjust the web host and replace services in the test service collection.
- Use a dedicated test database or another deliberately chosen test data source rather than production configuration.
- Replace external services with controlled test implementations when the scenario does not require the real service.
- Keep infrastructure real only where the integration itself is what the test is meant to exercise.
- Consider separate unit-test and integration-test projects when that separation helps keep infrastructure dependencies out of fast tests or lets the team run suites independently.
These choices are trade-offs: replacing every dependency can leave an integration path untested, while using every production-like service makes tests slower and more complex. Keep the real boundary that matters to the scenario and control the rest.

Test Minimal APIs at the right boundary
Minimal API projects can use the same layered approach. Test handler logic directly when the question is about its inputs, decisions, or returned IResult; use an in-memory database or other test substitute when that is enough to verify the logic. Use WebApplicationFactory when the question involves routing, middleware, dependency injection, serialization, or a component interaction that only exists in the running application.
Expose the generated Program type to the test project if necessary, then create the factory-backed client to exercise the HTTP endpoint. Avoid making every handler case a full-host test: keep detailed branching coverage in unit tests and reserve host-level cases for behavior at the HTTP and infrastructure boundaries.

The test project cannot find Program
With minimal hosting, the generated entry-point type may not be visible to the test assembly. Add a public partial Program declaration or use InternalsVisibleTo, as documented by Microsoft, then use that entry point as the factory type.
The test host connects to the wrong service or environment
Do not leave test configuration implicit. The documented SUT environment default is Development when unset, and a test may otherwise inherit unsuitable settings. Configure test-specific settings and replace or redirect services through the factory so test data cannot reach production resources.

The runner does not discover or execute tests
Check that the framework, runner, and test SDK packages match the chosen test platform and target framework. In Microsoft’s cited xUnit sample, xunit.runner.visualstudio 2.4.2 or later requires Microsoft.NET.Test.Sdk; consult current package instructions rather than assuming an old package set applies unchanged.
An integration test is slow or fragile
Check whether it is exercising more infrastructure than the assertion requires. Move isolated logic to unit tests, keep a smaller set of representative infrastructure cases, and control external dependencies that are not the subject of the test.
Performance and suite organization
Unit tests usually provide the quickest feedback because they avoid infrastructure setup. Integration tests take more code, data processing, and execution time, so run them for the component boundaries that matter instead of duplicating unit coverage. Browser automation adds a distinct user-interface validation level; use it for flows whose correctness depends on browser behavior.
Separate projects are optional, not mandatory. They are useful when the team needs to keep infrastructure packages out of unit tests or run integration tests on a different schedule. Keep the test host and test data deterministic, and ensure the suite makes its environment explicit so a local or CI run does not silently depend on a developer’s configuration.
