Ask PyData is a project for asking Python data-library questions—especially about pandas, Polars, and DuckDB—with answers grounded in stored, source-linked claims and version notes. Its approach can make changing APIs and disputed performance comparisons easier to inspect, but the project’s demonstrations are not independent proof of answer quality or production reliability.

What Ask PyData is designed to do

Builder Feng Yu describes Ask PyData as an agent that helps users choose among Python data libraries and plan migrations. Rather than treating every answer as free-form advice, the design stores claims and version-specific notes as structured content, each associated with a source URL. The project article describes the system and examples at Ask PyData: A Source-Linked Agent for Python Data Library Decisions.

In the author’s account, the agent checks version-note records before answering version-sensitive questions, attaches sources to claims, and marks conflicting comparisons as disputed instead of silently choosing one. These are descriptions of the intended design, not guarantees established by an independent code audit.

How the information is organized

The project article says its Sanity content model uses six document types, queried by a Python client through a hosted Sanity MCP endpoint using GROQ:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Document type Role described by the project
library Library information, including a current version and execution model.
versionNote Version-related details checked for questions where release behavior matters.
apiEquivalent Mappings between APIs, with room to describe semantic differences.
migrationGuide Guidance for moving code between libraries.
performanceBenchmark Benchmark records that can include the environment context.
comparisonClaim Comparative claims that can be labeled confirmed, disputed, or deprecated.

This structure is intended to keep library choice connected to practical constraints: API and migration effort, execution model, version-specific behavior, compatibility with existing code, and the workload behind a benchmark. It does not itself establish which library is best for a particular project.

What the demonstrations show—and what they do not

The project article illustrates three kinds of questions: what changed in pandas 3.0 and Polars 2.0; how to translate pandas groupby, merge, and fillna work to Polars; and whether a claim such as “Polars is 5x faster” is trustworthy. Those examples show the intended workflow, not an independently tested measure of the agent’s accuracy.

API mappings require semantic checks

The article pairs pandas groupby with Polars group_by, fillna with fill_null, and pd.merge with join. It also contrasts pandas read_csv with Polars scan_csv for a lazy-reading form. These are useful starting points, not drop-in substitutions: confirm the current library documentation and check how each operation handles types, missing values, execution, and output. The project article specifically notes that Polars distinguishes null from NaN, a distinction that can affect data-cleaning results.

Version questions depend on the release record

pandas’ official pandas 3.0.0 release notes date the release to January 21, 2026. They describe a dedicated string dtype enabled by default, Copy-on-Write behavior as the default, changed chained-assignment semantics, and removal of functionality deprecated in earlier releases. pandas recommends upgrading to 2.3 first and resolving warnings before moving to 3.0.

The Ask PyData article says Polars 2.0 shipped on September 2, 2026 and describes a streaming-engine default. The official Polars release listing available for review showed a Python Polars 2.0.0 release candidate, but did not substantiate that final-release date. Treat the date and related release assertions as unconfirmed unless current official release notes establish them.

Performance claims need workload evidence

The example labels “~5x faster aggregate” as disputed and attributes it to a Polars 2.0 announcement post. The project article does not establish the benchmark’s workload or environment, and the figure is not an independently reproduced result. It should not be read as a general pandas-versus-Polars speed ratio. A useful comparison requires the actual operation, data shape, hardware, software versions, and measurement method.

How to use an agent like this responsibly

  1. Pin down your context. State the library versions, the operation you need, and whether your code relies on eager or lazy execution.
  2. Inspect the cited sources. Follow the linked documentation or release note and confirm that it covers your version and behavior.
  3. Check migration semantics. Treat API names as clues, then validate null handling, types, joins, grouping behavior, and result shape in a small test.
  4. Interrogate performance comparisons. Ask for the workload and environment behind a benchmark; without them, a headline multiplier is not a reliable basis for choosing a library.
  5. Verify consequential changes yourself. Use official release notes and run your tests before changing production code.

Yu summarizes the design this way: “every claim carries a sourceUrl, every version-sensitive answer is checked against versionNote documents first, and contradictory claims are surfaced as disputed instead of silently picked.” That is the builder’s description of the project, rather than an independently audited guarantee.

What is known about the build

The author reports building the project in one evening on remote WSL2 with Ubuntu 24.04. The build account mentions issues with the Node installation path, NDJSON import format, an incompatible Sanity Studio plugin, hosted HTTP MCP transport, and secure local handling of the Sanity token. These are the builder’s reported experiences, not a general compatibility assessment. The project’s current maintenance status and hosted-demo availability are not established by the cited material.
