Treat ESP8266 GPIO as not 5 V tolerant: Espressif says GPIO voltage cannot be 5 V, gives a GPIO tolerance figure of 3.6 V, and advises against connecting 5 V logic peripherals directly. Use a suitable voltage divider or level converter. A development board’s 5 V power input, if it has one, is separate from the electrical limits of its GPIO pins.
What voltage can ESP8266 GPIO handle?
Espressif’s [ESP8266 documentation](https://www.espressif.com/en/products/socs/esp8266) says, “The external voltage level for GPIO cannot be 5V,” and advises, “Please do not directly attach peripherals with 5V logic to the ESP8266.” It lists digital voltage requirements of 1.8–3.3 V and analog voltage requirements of 3.0–3.6 V.
Espressif’s [FAQ](https://www.espressif.com/en/support/faq) states that GPIO voltage tolerance is 3.6 V and recommends a voltage divider if the signal exceeds that level. It separately describes ESP8266 operation in the 3.3 V class, within a stated 2.7–3.6 V range. These figures concern different electrical contexts; do not treat the 3.6 V GPIO tolerance figure as permission to use a 5 V signal.
An Espressif forum responder, Espressif_Kelly, wrote on 14 October 2015: “IO and digital power supply of ESP8266EX ranges from 1.8V to 3.3V. We donot recommend you to apply 5V to IO.” The role of that forum responder is not independently established, but the advice is consistent with Espressif’s documentation.

Why do some people say an ESP8266 survives 5 V?
Survival in a particular setup is not the same as a guaranteed operating limit. People have reported devices surviving direct 5 V input for months; that kind of anecdote does not establish reliability across chips, pins, boards, or operating conditions.
A 2022 [Hackaday report](https://hackaday.com/2022/08/25/is-the-esp8266-5v-tolerant/) describes a curve-tracer experiment on one ESP-01 module. With a GPIO configured as an input and a 1 kΩ series resistor, the reported current changed from about 0.2 mA to 0.4 mA across a measured range of 0–6.6 V, with no noticeable increase. The author interpreted the observation as evidence for tolerance, while noting that the series resistor could affect the result.

That measurement is useful context for why the claim circulates, but it does not override Espressif’s stated limit. It was one module, included a series resistor, and did not establish long-term reliability or a guarantee for every pin and board. The report also notes a separate risk: a pin configured as a 3.3 V output during boot could contend with a 5 V source.
Does a board’s 5 V power input make its GPIO 5 V safe?
No. A development board may accept 5 V through a designated power input because its own circuitry regulates that supply for the ESP8266. That does not change the voltage limits at the chip’s GPIO pins. Check the documentation or markings for your specific module or board, and distinguish its power input from its signal pins.

How should you connect a 5 V logic signal?
For a dependable design that follows Espressif’s guidance, reduce the signal to a level within the GPIO range before it reaches the ESP8266.
- Voltage divider: Suitable for many one-way signals. Choose resistor values for the signal’s source, speed, and input requirements, and confirm the resulting voltage stays within the GPIO limit.
- Logic-level converter: Choose a circuit suited to the interface and direction of travel. A generic bidirectional converter is not automatically appropriate for every signal, speed, or pull-up arrangement.
- Board-specific interface: If the peripheral or board provides a 3.3 V-compatible output or a documented level-shifting interface, verify its specifications rather than assuming compatibility from connector labels.
Also consider what the GPIO does during startup, not only its steady-state role. If a pin can become an output while the 5 V peripheral is driving it, the two sides may contend. Check the board and chip pin behavior before wiring a signal directly.

Which guidance should you follow?
For reliable operation, follow Espressif’s published GPIO guidance: do not apply 5 V logic directly; use a divider or appropriate level converter. The bench observation explains why some individual devices may appear to tolerate higher voltages, but it is not a manufacturer guarantee. Unless Espressif publishes an explicit revised tolerance guarantee, the official limit—not an anecdote or a single-module test—should govern the design.
