The ASICS METASPEED EDGE TOKYO is a carbon-plated racing shoe built for runners ASICS describes as cadence-style: those who increase speed by taking quicker steps. It differs from the METASPEED SKY TOKYO in its midsole and plate setup, but that design label alone cannot tell you which shoe will suit your stride, fit preferences, or preferred ride. One reviewer who ran 60 miles reported a secure fit and a tighter toe area, and ultimately preferred the Sky Tokyo.
What is the METASPEED EDGE TOKYO?
The EDGE TOKYO is ASICS model 1013A163, part of the brand’s METASPEED racing line. ASICS calls it a “pinnacle racing product” designed for cadence-style runners “who are looking to start fast and finish faster.” That is the manufacturer’s intended-use description, not a promise that every runner with a particular cadence will perform better in it.
The shoe has a carbon plate and ASICSGRIP outsole rubber. ASICS says the Edge and Sky models use different combinations of midsole thickness and material placement, forefoot curvature, and carbon-plate shape and position to address different running styles. Those are design distinctions; the available evidence does not establish that one configuration is universally faster or better.
EDGE TOKYO vs. SKY TOKYO: how to choose
| What to compare | METASPEED EDGE TOKYO | METASPEED SKY TOKYO |
|---|---|---|
| ASICS’s intended runner | Cadence-style runners | ASICS positions the Sky for a different running style; the cited product material does not provide a detailed definition here. |
| Design approach | Different midsole thickness and material placement, forefoot curvature, and carbon-plate shape and position from the Sky. | Different midsole thickness and material placement, forefoot curvature, and carbon-plate shape and position from the Edge. |
| Independent fit evidence | One Tom’s Guide reviewer reported a secure fit and a tighter toe area than some cushioned shoes. | The same reviewer preferred the Sky Tokyo in their direct comparison after running 60 miles in the Edge. |
| Japan price listed by ASICS | ¥29,700, tax included (ASICS Japan page accessed in 2026). | Not stated in the cited ASICS Japan product material. |
Use the cadence-versus-stride distinction as a starting point, not a shoe-selection test. Consider the Edge if its intended style and fit sound appropriate, then compare both models in person if possible. The Tom’s Guide preference is one runner’s experience, not a general verdict for all runners. ASICS Japan’s METASPEED series page describes the model distinction; Tom’s Guide’s review provides the individual fit and comparison account.

Fit and ride: what one reviewer found
In a review published October 13, 2025, a Tom’s Guide reviewer said the Edge felt secure but had a tighter toe area than some cushioned running shoes. After 60 miles in the shoe, the reviewer preferred the Sky Tokyo in their comparison, while still describing the Edge as a strong racing option. This is a personal report, not a measured fit standard or a prediction of how the shoe will feel on your foot.
If toe room is important to you, try the Edge on rather than assuming that a secure fit will also feel spacious. Fit can vary by foot shape and size; the cited review does not establish a universal sizing recommendation. The available evidence also does not support claims here about injury prevention, race outcomes, or long-term durability.

What changed from the EDGE PARIS?
ASICS Japan says the EDGE TOKYO is about 15 g lighter than the EDGE PARIS and has about 21.4% greater energy return. Both figures are manufacturer claims, and the weight comparison specifies a 27.0 cm shoe; they are not independent measurements or a guarantee of a noticeable difference for every runner. ASICS does not provide, in the cited material, enough testing detail to treat the energy-return figure as an independently verified result. See ASICS Japan’s product information for the claims.

The EDGE TOKYO is worth considering if you want a carbon-plated racing shoe and ASICS’s cadence-oriented design matches your preferences. The main reasons to pause are personal: a tighter toe feel may not suit you, and the Sky Tokyo may feel better in a direct comparison. Try the shoe if possible, and weigh fit and ride ahead of the cadence label. Check your market’s current price and stock through ASICS or a running retailer; current marketplace listings and prices are not established here.
