In a reflection published on September 5, 2023, ahead of Google’s 25th-birthday celebration, CEO Sundar Pichai cast artificial intelligence as both a defining part of the company’s history and its most important opportunity for the years ahead. His essay is a corporate outlook: it recounts Google’s AI milestones, cites company-reported examples, and argues for responsible deployment; it is not an independent assessment of the results or a guarantee that the future applications he describes will materialize.

What Pichai said about Google’s next chapter

Pichai’s central argument is that AI could help Google extend its mission at a larger scale. He wrote, “With AI, we have the opportunity to do things that matter on an even larger scale.” He also said, “Making AI more helpful for everyone, and deploying it responsibly, is the most important way we’ll deliver on our mission for the next 10 years and beyond.” Both statements express the company’s ambition and priorities, rather than evidence that every proposed benefit has already been achieved. How the essay traces Google’s AI history

Neural networks and the AI-first direction

Pichai recalls the excitement around deep neural networks in the early 2010s. He says research at DeepMind helped shape his thinking when he became Google’s CEO in 2015, including the view that Google should become an AI-first company. This is his account of how the company’s strategic direction developed, not a complete history of Google’s AI work.

TPUs as a hardware milestone

The essay presents Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) as part of the infrastructure built to support machine learning. Pichai said they delivered a 30-to-80-times performance improvement over other hardware “at the time.” That range is a comparison he reported in 2023, with its timeframe attached; the essay does not specify a particular benchmark or establish a present-day advantage.

The Transformer paper

Pichai also highlights the 2017 Transformer paper as a technical milestone in the foundation for machine learning and generative AI. In the essay, the paper sits alongside custom hardware as part of the longer development that made later AI applications possible.

Products and examples in the 2023 essay

Pichai connects the technical history to products and work under way at the time of publication. His examples include Search, Bard, Gmail, Lens, and Google Workspace, across tasks such as writing, image-based queries, translation, and speech synthesis. These names and examples belong to the 2023 context of the anniversary essay; they should not be read as a current product or availability guide.

He also reported that one million people were already using generative AI in Google Workspace. That is a figure Pichai gave in 2023, not a current usage total or an independently measured adoption statistic.

What the essay says AI might make possible

Beyond consumer-facing products, Pichai raises possible uses of AI in education, clean energy, transport, agriculture, and disaster readiness. He asks, for example, “How could every student have access to a personal tutor, in any language, and on any topic?” and “How could we help communities predict and prepare for natural disasters?” These questions describe opportunities he wants AI to address, not proof that those outcomes are broadly available or effective.

The essay gives two figures for applications it described in 2023: Google’s flood forecasting covered places where more than 460 million people lived, according to Pichai, and he said one million researchers had used the AlphaFold database, which covered 200 million protein-structure predictions. These are the essay’s reported coverage and usage figures for 2023; they do not establish present-day totals or, by themselves, measure real-world impact.

How to read the anniversary reflection

  • Historical milestones: Pichai links early deep-learning enthusiasm, DeepMind research, TPUs, and the 2017 Transformer paper to Google’s AI direction.
  • Company-reported claims: The performance range and adoption or coverage figures are statements in a Google CEO’s 2023 essay, not independent evaluations.
  • Examples versus aspirations: Product examples and reported projects are distinct from proposed benefits in fields such as education and disaster preparation.
  • Responsibility as a stated priority: Pichai pairs making AI more helpful with deploying it responsibly, but the essay is not an independent audit of how well Google meets that goal.
