If your bibliography prints arXiv:arXiv:, the usual cause is that the archive label appears both in the BibTeX metadata and in the bibliography style’s output. Check the generated .bib entry and the active bibliography style before changing anything: the fix for the reported BibLaTeX case is to keep the identifier alone in eprint and store the archive name separately in archivePrefix.

Why does my bibliography show arXiv:arXiv:?

In the reported case, the exported eprint value already includes the literal arXiv:, and a BibLaTeX rendering macro adds that label again. The duplicate is an interaction between the entry’s metadata and the style or macro that formats it—not necessarily a problem with the identifier itself. The troubleshooting explanation and proposed field arrangement are described in the cited report.

Do not assume that every bibliography style reads eprint or archivePrefix, or that all converters export these fields the same way. First inspect the actual generated entry and establish whether the project uses BibTeX or BibLaTeX and which bibliography style is active.

How to correct the entry

  1. Open the generated .bib file and find the arXiv record. Check whether the eprint field starts with arXiv:.

  2. Check the project’s bibliography setup: determine whether it runs BibTeX or BibLaTeX and identify the active bibliography style or formatting macro.

  3. For the reported BibLaTeX pattern, remove the literal archive label from eprint, leaving the identifier itself, and put the archive name in archivePrefix. For example:

    @article{sample,
      eprint       = {0706.1234},
      archivePrefix = {arXiv}
    }

    This is the suggested metadata correction for that pattern, not a guarantee that every style or compiler will render it identically.

  4. Compile using the project’s existing bibliography processor and style, then inspect the reference. Confirm that the identifier appears once and that the label’s capitalization is as intended.

How should the arXiv identifier be written?

arXiv’s reference guidance gives a contiguous identifier form such as arXiv:0706.1234v1 [math.FA]. For new identifiers, it encourages including the subject category; a version suffix may be omitted when the intent is to point readers to the latest version. Keep the version and category deliberate when entering the identifier, rather than treating them as part of the duplicated-label fix. See arXiv’s reference guidance.

What if the issue is capitalization or a missing identifier?

The label is lowercase

Lowercase arxiv instead of mixed-case arXiv is a separate display issue. Better BibTeX maintainer retorquere wrote on June 16, 2024: “this is reasonable, I’ve made arXiv the default in the new release.” That statement concerns the exporter’s capitalization default; it does not establish how a particular bibliography style will format the final reference. See the maintainer’s reply.

The identifier disappears from a BibTeX/natbib bibliography

If the identifier is omitted rather than duplicated, that points to a different problem: the active BibTeX style may not print the exported field. Chengkun Li describes adding the identifier as a note field as a workaround. Treat that as a distinct option for a BibTeX/natbib setup, not as the correction for arXiv:arXiv:. If the project template allows it, you can also consider a BibLaTeX setup with a bibliography style configured for the fields you need. See Li’s explanation.
