For occasional, mild dry-eye symptoms, choose artificial tears by checking the active ingredients, preservative status, and whether you want a liquid, gel, or ointment. No single brand or ingredient is best for everyone. These over-the-counter lubricants can temporarily ease dryness, but they do not identify or treat the cause of persistent symptoms.

Start with the Drug Facts label

Compare products by the active ingredients and their stated purpose on the current U.S. Drug Facts panel. Artificial tears are not all chemically identical, and the label is more useful than a brand name for understanding what a product contains.

For example, a DailyMed label updated July 7, 2026 lists dextran 70 0.1%, glycerin 0.2%, and hypromellose 0.3% as lubricants. That is one formulation, not evidence that these ingredients are superior to other lubricants. Read the DailyMed label and check the package you are considering, since products and labels can change.

  • Confirm that the product is a lubricant intended for temporary dry-eye symptoms.
  • Read the active ingredients and warnings, rather than relying on terms such as “advanced” or “long-lasting.”
  • Follow the package directions and container instructions; do not assume that products with similar names have the same formulation or handling requirements.

Choose preservative status with frequency in mind

Preservatives can make a bottle practical for occasional use. If you need drops frequently over an extended period, or know you are sensitive or allergic to a preservative, consider preservative-free tears and discuss persistent symptoms with an eye-care professional.

Refresh TEARS Lubricant Eye Drops Artificial Tears, 2x0.5 fl oz (30 mL), 2 Count
  • ORIGINAL STRENGTH: Provides temporary relief for mild, occasional dry eye symptoms
  • FAST ACTING: Instantly lubricates and moisturizes
  • EASY TO USE: Apply 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed
  • SOOTHING: Safe to use as often as needed
  • VALUE SIZE: Two convenient multidose bottles

The guidance does not set one universal cutoff. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s public guidance suggests considering preservative-free drops when use is more than six times a day or with preservative allergy. Its Preferred Practice Pattern summary generally recommends nonpreserved substitutes for frequent chronic use, giving more than four times daily as an example. These are different examples, not a single hard rule. See the AAO buying guidance and the AAO Preferred Practice Pattern.

Preservative-free does not necessarily mean single-use: some products use single-dose vials, while others use specialized multidose bottles. Conversely, not every multidose bottle is preservative-free. Check the specific label and instructions.

Pick a format that fits when you need relief

Format What to consider Often practical for
Liquid drops Usually less viscous than gels or ointments, so they are often easier to use without prolonged blur. Daytime convenience
Gel drops Thicker preparations may remain on the eye longer, but can blur vision temporarily. When longer-lasting lubrication is preferred and brief blur is manageable
Ointment Can last longer than a liquid, but may blur vision after application. Often reserved for bedtime

As AAO dry-eye specialist Christopher E. Starr, MD, puts it: “The thicker the lubricant is the longer it tends to last on the ocular surface.” That added staying power comes with a trade-off: temporary blur. If you need clear vision for a task, a liquid may be more convenient; thicker products may fit better into a bedtime routine.

Consider packaging as well as the formula

Single-dose vials can be convenient to carry and may suit people seeking a preservative-free option, while multidose bottles may be more convenient for repeated use at home. Compare ease of handling, cost, and packaging waste, then follow the product’s instructions for opening, use, and disposal. Packaging alone does not establish preservative status; verify it on the label.

Let symptoms guide a conversation, not a self-diagnosis

Dry-eye symptoms can have more than one contributing cause. AAO guidance discusses oil-containing drops as an option when evaporative dry eye is relevant, and thinner or hypotonic (hypo-osmolar) drops for aqueous-deficient dry eye. But mixed or hybrid causes are common, so the ingredient list alone cannot tell you which type you have. If you suspect a particular pattern, ask an eye-care professional rather than treating a label as a diagnosis. Christopher E. Starr, MD, notes: “There’s not really a ‘wrong’ choice since many cases of dry eye disease are mixed or have hybrid causes.”

Use drops safely and know when to seek care

Eye drops must be sterile. The FDA says: “Any drug used in the eyes must be sterile to reduce the risk of infection.” Wash your hands before use, keep the dropper tip from touching your eye, hands, clothing, or other surfaces, and replace the cap as directed. The FDA’s eye-drop safety page includes safety information and historical events; check the current status of any alert rather than assuming an older notice describes an active recall.

Stop relying on self-selected OTC tears and seek professional advice for eye pain, vision changes, discharge, significant redness, or symptoms that persist or worsen. AAO also recommends an eye-care visit when symptoms interfere with daily activities or are not relieved by OTC lubricants. Do not delay evaluation by cycling through products when these warning signs are present.

For dry-eye symptoms, do not confuse lubricating tears with “red eye relief” drops containing vasoconstrictors such as tetrahydrozoline or naphazoline. AAO cautions that these redness-relief drops may worsen redness or symptoms over time; this caution concerns their use for redness relief, not every medical use of those ingredients.
