ArtCraft is developing Rust applications modeled on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but its WordCraft word processor was still pre-alpha when The Register reported on the projects on October 8, 2026. The report describes a promising early effort—not a production-ready replacement for Microsoft Office. ArtCraft’s estimate of 62 percent feature parity is its own project figure, and real-world DOCX compatibility testing had not yet begun.
What is ArtCraft building?
ArtCraft describes the applications as clean-room reimplementations: software intended to reproduce familiar tools without using their source code. The Register reports substantial use of Claude in development. ArtCraft’s GitHub profile describes two related projects: GridCraft, an open-source Excel-style spreadsheet in Rust, and DeckCraft, an open-source PowerPoint reimplementation in Rust. The Register’s report centers on WordCraft, the Word-style application.
The projects aim at recognizable office workflows, but the available reporting does not establish that they can substitute for Microsoft’s apps across everyday documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. There are no systematic side-by-side test results in the report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs WordCraft ready to replace Microsoft Word?
No—not on the evidence available. The Register called WordCraft pre-alpha and said ArtCraft described an alpha release for everyday writing as close. It advised against using the software for production workloads. “Close” to an alpha is not the same as a finished release, and the report gives no production-readiness testing.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
ArtCraft estimated that WordCraft had reached 62 percent of real feature parity, as reported by The Register. That is the developer’s estimate, not an independently measured benchmark. It should not be read as a guarantee that a given document or workflow will work, or as a direct measure of compatibility with Word.
Can WordCraft open DOCX files reliably?
The report says WordCraft had not yet begun testing DOCX compatibility against a collection of real-world files. That leaves a major practical question unanswered: how reliably it handles the documents people already use, including formatting and embedded content. No measured DOCX compatibility rate is supplied.

The Register identifies charts, SmartArt, and embedded OLE objects as features that had been dropped. Anyone whose work depends on those elements should not assume WordCraft will preserve or reproduce them. The report does not establish whether other specific DOCX features work consistently.
What did the first hands-on report find?
The Register’s reporter said WordCraft worked pretty well during a first look on one Arm-based Surface. The application resembles Word, though its buttons, icons, and other imagery differ. This is a single reported observation, not a broad test of performance, hardware support, or document compatibility. The report does not establish how WordCraft behaves across other operating systems or devices.

What licensing and text resources does WordCraft use?
According to details attributed to ArtCraft by The Register, WordCraft is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache 2.0. ArtCraft also said its spelling dictionary and hyphenation come from Grady Ward’s public-domain Moby Hyphenator II word list. Those details describe licensing and a text resource; they do not demonstrate that the application is complete or compatible with every Office workflow.
What does “clean-room reimplementation” mean legally?
The phrase describes an approach to recreating software functionality without using the original program’s source code; it does not, by itself, settle whether a particular project is lawful. The Register quoted Neil Brown of decoded.legal discussing a possible argument that developers who independently implement underlying functionality could have a non-infringing reimplementation. He also said the legal situation could be litigated. That is legal commentary, not a ruling or a conclusion about ArtCraft’s projects.

What should prospective users check?
For now, treat WordCraft as an early project to watch rather than a replacement to trust with important work. Before relying on it, a prospective user would need evidence about:
Best Value
- Sleek and simple design that complements your Surface device.
- Dedicated Copilot[l] key for instant access to new experiences available on Windows 11.
- Convenient shortcut keys including Call mute, Snip & Sketch, Expressive input and Widget[2] for quick and easy access.
- Comfortable and responsive typing experience.
- Seamlessly pair to your device through wireless Bluetooth 4.0 connection with a range of up to 16 feet.
- Whether representative DOCX files open and retain their formatting and content.
- How the software handles charts, SmartArt, embedded objects, and other workflow-critical features.
- Which operating systems and hardware are supported, and how the application behaves on them.
- Whether its maturity and support meet the needs of a production workflow.
- How its feature coverage compares with the office suite being replaced, rather than relying on a project parity estimate.
The October 8, 2026 report does not answer those questions systematically. It establishes an ambitious Rust-based effort, an early positive observation on one device, and substantial gaps in the evidence needed to judge it as a dependable Office alternative.
