Army is a Java SQL DSL project, not a military system. A DEV Community article describes its MySQL support as a distinct language surface—with dedicated APIs, builders and SQL rendering—rather than a server label attached to generic query code. That design can make MySQL-specific syntax easier to express and some version incompatibilities visible before a query reaches the database; it also adds concepts to learn and can reduce portability.
What makes a SQL dialect first-class?
A SQL dialect accounts for the syntax and behavior a particular database accepts. MySQL has both SQL-standard features and its own extensions and differences, which Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual distinguishes in its documentation. When a library treats a dialect as first-class, it models those differences in more than a connection setting: they can shape the available query-building API, validation and rendered SQL.
The DEV Community article “Inside Army’s MySQL Dialect: When SQL Dialects Are First-Class Citizens” presents Army’s MySQL implementation in those terms. Its implementation details here are attributed to that article; they should not be read as an independent audit of the current project source.
How the article says Army models MySQL
The article describes distinct MySQL contracts and builders, plus a rendering layer that handles MySQL grammar. It names interfaces and components including MySQLQuery, MySQLInsert, MySQLLoadData, MySQLShow and MySQLDialectParser. Taken together, these suggest a design in which MySQL-specific statements and clauses have dedicated entry points, rather than being represented only by scattered conditional logic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That separation matters when a query needs syntax that is meaningful specifically to MySQL. The article’s examples include SELECT modifiers, locking clauses, backtick-delimited identifiers, unsigned types, and MySQL-specific DDL options. It also highlights the MySQL form LIMIT offset, row_count, as well as LOAD DATA, user variables and SHOW statements. These are examples of the reported API’s scope, not a guarantee that every MySQL feature is covered.
Why server-version awareness matters
Supporting MySQL syntax is not enough if a server version cannot parse a particular feature. The article reports that Army selects a dialect using live server metadata and gates selected syntax by server version. In its example, a common table expression (CTE) is rejected during rendering when the dialect is MySQL 5.7. The point is that an incompatibility may be exposed while constructing or rendering a statement, rather than being left entirely for execution to fail.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The article lists explicit dialect enum constants for MySQL 5.5, 5.6, 5.7 and 8.0. That list describes what the article reports; it should not be treated as a complete or current compatibility range. Before relying on version-specific behavior, check the project’s current documentation and test against the exact server versions your application supports.
What this approach gives up
More native MySQL expression
Dedicated APIs can make vendor-specific capabilities available without forcing them through a lowest-common-denominator interface. For an application that intentionally depends on MySQL features, that can be more direct than using only portable SQL constructs.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
More API surface to learn
The article’s author argues that staged interfaces make invalid clause order harder to express, while increasing the size and learning cost of the API. Type-guided construction can help constrain how a statement is assembled, but it does not eliminate the need to understand SQL semantics or verify the resulting query.
Less portability for dialect-specific chains
The article says MySQL-specific builders are not intended to be portable to other dialects. Shared APIs are the route for code meant to work across databases; code that uses MySQL-only types, clauses or builders may need adaptation if the database changes. This is a design tradeoff, not evidence of a controlled comparison with other Java query libraries.

What to verify before adopting Army
A Sonatype Central result identifies io.qinarmy:army-mysql as the MySQL dialect API and parser and shows version 0.6.6. That captured listing establishes an artifact identity and a displayed version, not that it is the current release or that the project is actively maintained. Check the project’s primary documentation and repository before making an adoption decision; the cited article and artifact listing alone do not establish present maintenance status or full compatibility.

- Check documented MySQL server-version support against the versions used in development, testing and production.
- Try the specific syntax your application needs, including how the library validates and renders it.
- Decide which queries must remain portable and keep those on shared APIs where possible.
- Assess whether the dedicated builders and staged interfaces suit your team’s familiarity with Java DSLs and SQL.
