Short answer: Argos and Percy both integrate with Playwright, but they fit different existing workflows. Argos’s documented setup uses a Playwright reporter and explicit argosScreenshot() calls; Percy supports its own percySnapshot() calls and a documented drop-in route for existing toHaveScreenshot() assertions. Choose after checking how each establishes baselines, handles pull-request review and CI gates, and fits your debugging needs—not on price claims alone.
How the Playwright integrations differ
Argos: reporter plus explicit snapshots
Argos’s Playwright quickstart asks you to install @argos-ci/playwright, add its reporter to Playwright’s configuration, then call argosScreenshot(page, "homepage") at the point in a test you want a snapshot. CI uploads use ARGOS_TOKEN; the quickstart also notes GitHub Actions OIDC or tokenless authentication options.
For debugging artifacts, configure Playwright to record traces and failure screenshots. Argos documents uploading those artifacts through its reporter when the corresponding Playwright recording options are enabled. Its quickstart also describes a pull-request check and review/approval flow.
Percy: Percy snapshots or existing assertions
Percy’s Playwright package documents percySnapshot(page, name), run under percy exec with a project token. That means adding Percy-specific snapshot calls where you want captures.

If your tests already use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), Percy documents a drop-in configuration that routes those assertions into Percy without changing the assertion calls. The README says this drop-in requires @playwright/test 1.49 or later. In this mode, visual verdicts move to Percy’s review UI; an optional CI reporter gate can fail on changes. Confirm compatibility with your installed versions before adopting it.
Percy’s integration page describes CI/CD support, including suites distributed across processes or machines, pull/merge-request integration, Slack notifications and webhooks.

What to test before choosing
Migration effort and test style
Inventory existing visual assertions first. Argos’s documented route adds a reporter and explicit helper calls. Percy offers either its own snapshot calls or the drop-in route for existing toHaveScreenshot() assertions. The lower-effort option depends on how your tests are written and which framework versions you run; the docs do not establish a universal migration-time advantage.
Baseline seeding and updates
Argos says a build on the default branch is needed before pull-request builds have a normal comparison baseline; earlier PR builds are marked orphan. Plan a default-branch run before relying on PR comparisons.

Percy’s drop-in README describes behavior for an empty project and committed Playwright baseline PNGs, and says established Percy projects do not silently re-baseline through that setup path. Exercise baseline seeding in a disposable project: confirm what appears on the first run, how a change is reviewed, and how an accepted change reaches later CI runs.
Review workflow and merge gates
Decide whether visual changes should be informational or block merges. Percy documents an optional reporter gate for the drop-in flow; Argos’s quickstart describes a PR check and review/approval flow. In either case, verify who can approve changes and how accepted changes update the baseline in your team’s actual CI setup.

Debugging evidence
Argos explicitly documents Playwright trace and failure-screenshot uploads when the recording options are enabled. The Percy package documentation reviewed here describes snapshots and review, but does not establish equivalent trace-upload behavior. That is a documentation limit, not proof that Percy lacks other debugging capabilities; check its current documentation if trace upload is a requirement.
Rendering stability
Visual comparisons can be noisy when fonts, animation, dynamic content, browser versions or rendering environments differ. Argos’s quickstart recommends disabling LCD text and font hinting in Chromium to reduce differences between a developer machine and CI. Percy documents capture controls including full-page capture, freezing animated images, custom CSS and ignored regions. Decide which controls your tests need and keep CI’s browser and data conditions consistent.

How to estimate and verify cost
Argos’s comparison page displays $100/month for Argos and $599/month for Percy, but does not establish when those price figures were captured. In an article published August 11, 2026, Argos co-founder and CEO Greg Bergé described Argos Pro as $100/month with 35,000 screenshots included and called $599/month the cheapest known Percy tier, describing those figures as of July 2026. These are vendor-authored, time-sensitive claims, not independently verified quotes. Check current plans and contractual terms with both vendors before purchase.
Do not compare a monthly headline price without estimating the usage it covers. Count snapshots across tests, viewports, browsers, CI builds and retries; then confirm each vendor’s counting rules, included volume and overage terms. The published Argos figures do not establish Percy’s current plan limits or either vendor’s terms for your specific workload.

- Choose Argos if its reporter/helper setup, default-branch baseline process, PR review flow and documented trace/failure-screenshot uploads match your workflow.
- Choose Percy if its snapshot API or documented drop-in for existing Playwright assertions fits better, and you want its documented review-UI verdict and optional CI gate.
- Before committing, run a small pilot that seeds a baseline, introduces a deliberate visual change, checks PR review and gate behavior, and confirms how an approved change updates the baseline.
- Verify current pricing and screenshot-counting rules directly with the vendors using your expected test, viewport, browser, build and retry volume.
