No. USB is still an actively developed standard, not a relic. USB-IF’s document library lists a USB4 Specification v2.0 entry dated April 2, 2026, and its USB4 overview describes support for earlier USB generations. That shows the standard continues to evolve; it does not, by itself, show how widely consumers use USB or whether it is replacing cloud and wireless transfers.
What “USB” means today
USB is a family of specifications for connecting devices and transferring data, rather than one connector or one fixed speed. USB Type-C describes a connector system; the data capabilities depend on the specifications supported by the host device, the peripheral, and the cable. USB4 is described over USB Type-C. A Type-C-shaped port or plug alone does not establish how quickly data can move.
USB-IF announced publication of the USB4 specification on September 3, 2019. The announcement described USB4 as building on USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 and as based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel: USB-IF’s USB4 announcement.
How USB has evolved
USB-IF describes USB4 as complementing and building on USB 3.2 and USB 2.0, with compatibility for USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices. Its architecture can share a high-speed link among different end-device types. The practical benefit is that USB is not limited to a single kind of data transfer or one generation of hardware.

- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
The specification work continues. The USB-IF document library lists “USB4® Specification v2.0,” dated April 2, 2026, and “USB Type-C® Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.5,” dated April 8, 2026. Those are document-library entries, not evidence that a particular class of consumer devices has adopted the specifications: USB-IF document library.
USB speeds: why the label matters
USB data rates vary substantially by specification and configuration. USB-IF’s January 2024 performance guidelines identify rates of 80, 40, 20, 10, and 5 Gbps across USB4 and USB 3.2. These are standard or performance-label figures, not guaranteed file-copy speeds on a particular setup: USB-IF USB Data Performance Guidelines, January 2024.

- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
For example, USB-IF describes USB 3.2 as supporting up to two 10 Gbps lanes for a 20 Gbps data-transfer rate. The USB4 overview states operation over 80 Gbps certified cables at up to 80 Gbps. These figures describe capabilities under the relevant specifications; they should not be read as a promise that a given file will copy at those rates.

A connection scales to the best mutual capability of the connected components. In practice, check the host, device, and cable specifications together. The connection may be limited by whichever component supports less, and the file workload also affects the result. See the USB-IF USB4 overview and its data-performance guidance.

When USB is still useful
- For a portable local copy: A flash drive or external SSD can carry files directly between compatible devices without relying on an online storage account.
- For offline access: A physical drive is useful when the source or destination has no internet connection, provided both devices can connect to it.
- For direct device-to-device transfers: A cable or drive can provide a physical connection when that suits the devices and task.
A USB-C flash drive, USB-C external SSD, or appropriately specified USB-C data cable may suit different needs, but none is required for every user. Choose by the devices you need to connect, the amount of storage, and the data capabilities specified for the drive and cable—not by the connector shape alone.
USB versus cloud and wireless transfer
There is no universal winner. USB provides a physical route and can keep a copy local; cloud and wireless methods may fit other situations. The available evidence does not establish a current, like-for-like comparison with named cloud services or wireless methods, so it cannot support a claim that USB is always faster, more convenient, or safer—or that wireless has replaced it. The right choice depends on whether you need offline access or a local copy, what devices and infrastructure you have, and how the actual transfer performs for your files.

What USB’s future looks like
The clearest supported conclusion is that USB remains a maintained and evolving standard with a range of data capabilities. The dated specification and connector-document entries show ongoing standards work, while the USB4 overview describes continuity with earlier USB generations. Those facts establish technical development, not consumer adoption, market share, or a forecast that USB will dominate future data transfer.
