Are structs always allocated on the stack in C#? No. A struct is a value type, which means its values are copied on assignment; that does not dictate one universal location in memory. A struct can be stored inline inside a class object or array, and boxing copies it into a separate managed-heap object. Only ref struct types have specific escape restrictions designed to keep them within safe contexts.
What does “value type” actually mean?
Value type describes how a value behaves, not a guaranteed physical address. When you assign one ordinary struct variable to another, C# copies the value. By contrast, assigning a class variable copies a reference to the same object.
Point p = new Point(2, 5);
Point q = p;
q.X = 9;
// p.X is still 2
Assuming Point is an ordinary struct with an X field, changing q changes its copy, not p. This is the language-level distinction to rely on; the exact physical placement of an ordinary local can depend on compilation and runtime implementation.
Where can a struct be stored?
Inside a class object
If a class has a struct field, that field’s value is part of the class object’s storage. The struct is not a separate heap object merely because it is a field on the heap.

class Marker
{
public Point Position;
}
When a Marker instance is allocated, its Position value resides inline in that instance.
Inside an array
An array of structs stores its elements inline in the array allocation. An array of class references instead stores references; the referenced class instances are separate objects.

Point[] points = new Point[100];
Widget[] widgets = new Widget[100];
The points array contains 100 Point values in its array storage. The widgets array contains 100 reference slots, which may refer to separately allocated Widget objects.
As a boxed value
Boxing occurs when a value type is converted to object or to an implemented interface in a way that requires a boxed value. The runtime creates a managed-heap object and copies the struct value into it.

Point point = new Point(2, 5);
object boxed = point;
boxed contains a separate copy. Later changes to the original struct do not change the boxed copy. Not every interface call necessarily boxes: generic constrained calls and compiler or runtime optimizations can avoid boxing in particular cases, so inspect the actual code path rather than assuming an interface use always allocates.
How is a struct different from a class in memory and behavior?
| Aspect | struct |
class |
|---|---|---|
| Assignment | Copies the value. | Copies a reference; variables can refer to the same object. |
| Storage in a containing array | Elements are stored inline in the array. | The array stores references; instances are separate objects. |
| Identity and shared mutation | Best suited to value-like data without a need for shared object identity. | Useful when reference identity or shared state is central. |
| Boxing | Converting to object or an interface can create a heap object containing a copy. |
Already represented by a reference to an object. |
| Inheritance | Does not support class inheritance. | Can participate in class inheritance. |
These are semantic and layout distinctions, not a promise that every struct is stack-resident or every class operation is slow. Microsoft Learn notes that “In most cases, there’s no significant difference in the performance cost of allocating a class instance on the heap versus allocating a struct instance on the stack.” That guidance is a reason to profile real workloads rather than infer speed from the words “stack” and “heap.”

What makes ref struct different?
ref struct is a restricted category intended for values whose references must not escape safe contexts; Span<T> is a familiar example. The restrictions prevent a value from being stored or used in ways that could let it outlive the memory it refers to. In general, a ref struct cannot be boxed, stored in an ordinary class field, placed in an array, or captured by a lambda.
Language-version details matter for async methods and iterators. In C# 13, ref struct variables can be used in some additional places in those methods, but they still cannot be used across relevant await or yield suspension points. Check the project’s configured C# language version and the precise restrictions that apply before relying on such code.

When should you choose a struct?
Choose based on the type’s meaning and use, not on a blanket goal of avoiding the heap.
- A struct is a reasonable fit for small, value-like data with value-based equality and no need for shared identity or class inheritance.
- Prefer immutable value types where practical. Copies are then easier to reason about than copies of mutable state.
- Microsoft Learn offers “roughly 16 bytes or less” as a rule of thumb for struct size, not a language limit or universal performance threshold.
- Choose a class when shared mutable state, stable reference identity, or class inheritance is central to the design.
- Account for copies, boxing, array layout, and interop requirements. Measure a real workload before making a performance decision.
Microsoft’s framework design guidance also cautions against excessive boxing. A struct can avoid a separate object per value in layouts such as arrays, but a conversion that boxes it creates a heap object. The right choice depends on how the value is stored and used, not just its declaration.
