No—not automatically. A smart ring’s wellness score or trend is not, by itself, a diagnosis or medical advice. In the United States, the intended use and claims for a particular feature matter. Do not use a ring’s unauthorized glucose or blood-pressure feature to guide care, and do not let a score override symptoms or advice from a qualified health professional.
Why a health insight is not automatically medical advice
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) distinguishes low-risk products intended to encourage a healthy lifestyle from products intended for clinical purposes. Its January 2026 final guidance on general-wellness products explains that software promoting a healthy lifestyle, unrelated to diagnosing, curing, mitigating, preventing, or treating disease, is not a medical device under the cited statutory provision.
A ring may present values, ranges, trends, baselines, or summaries in contexts such as sleep, activity, stress, or recovery. That presentation does not make the output a clinically usable measurement. The purpose, labeling, advertising, interface, and functionality of the feature matter; a wellness label alone does not establish that it is suitable for diagnosis or treatment decisions.
Can you trust a smart ring’s health readings?
It depends on the exact reading and what you intend to do with it. A wellness trend may help you reflect on habits, but that is different from relying on a measurement to make a medical decision. The available FDA materials do not establish a general accuracy level for smart rings as a category, so a score should not be treated as proof that you do or do not have a health problem.

Do not use a ring to measure blood glucose on its own
In a February 21, 2024 safety communication, the FDA stated: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” The agency warns consumers not to buy or use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure or estimate glucose without piercing the skin.
That statement concerns devices claiming to measure or estimate glucose on their own; it should not be generalized to every wearable function or to a separate authorized medical device. If glucose readings are part of your care, use an appropriate authorized device and follow your health professional’s guidance—not a ring’s standalone claim.

Do not rely on an unauthorized wearable blood-pressure feature
The FDA also warns against using unauthorized devices for blood-pressure measurement. Inaccurate readings can lead to diagnostic errors, delayed treatment, or inappropriate medication changes. If accurate blood-pressure readings matter to your care, ask a health professional which FDA-authorized device is appropriate. See the FDA’s safety communication on unauthorized blood-pressure devices.
How to check whether a specific ring feature is authorized
Do not infer authorization from a brand name, the word “medical,” or the fact that a product is a ring. The FDA’s list of medical devices incorporating sensor-based digital health technology includes certain authorized wearable devices, including rings, but the agency says the list is not comprehensive. A listing for one product or feature does not establish authorization for another.

- Identify the precise model and the particular feature you want to rely on—for example, a blood-pressure measurement rather than a general wellness trend.
- Look for that device and feature in the FDA sensor-based digital-health list, then follow its linked record to check the specific product and intended use.
- Confirm that the record matches the exact model and function. If you cannot verify a match, do not assume the feature is FDA-authorized; ask a health professional about an appropriate device.
FDA authorization is specific to a device and intended use, not a blanket endorsement of a product category. Regulatory rules and authorizations also differ outside the United States.
What to do when a score or reading concerns you
Do not delay care because a ring reports a reassuring score, and do not start, stop, or change treatment based on an unverified wearable reading. If you have concerning symptoms or a result that could affect your care, contact a qualified health professional. They can help determine whether the reading needs confirmation with an appropriate medical device.
