Usually, no—not if your Switch copies still suit you. Square Enix says the Switch 2 editions improve resolution and frame rate, but there is no upgrade pack and save data does not transfer. Buying one means paying for a separate copy and starting a new save. Rebuy if those stated improvements or owning the Switch 2 editions matter enough to justify that cost.
What changes in the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix lists improved resolution and frame rate for both Switch 2 editions compared with the original Switch versions. The publisher has not provided resolution figures or frame-rate targets in the cited product information, and this recommendation is not based on independent measurements or a side-by-side test. The documented case for rebuying is therefore a qualitative performance improvement, not a quantified guarantee of how noticeable it will be on your display.

Can you upgrade your Switch copy or carry over your save?
No. Square Enix’s Switch 2 product pages say there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack for the Switch version, and that save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Treat a Switch 2 purchase as a separate copy: budget for another purchase and expect to begin a new save rather than continue your existing progress. Which buying option makes sense?

Square Enix announced a physical Switch 2 bundle as well as individual and bundle digital preorders. The announcement does not establish current local prices, stock, or whether the bundle is better value in your region, so compare those before purchasing. Do you need both games?
No. They are separate adventures in different worlds, not two parts of one continuous story. The first follows eight protagonists in Orsterra; OCTOPATH TRAVELER II follows eight new protagonists in Solistia. If you are weighing OCTOPATH TRAVELER II specifically, its Extra Battle mode is not exclusive to Switch 2: Square Enix announced in June 2024 that the mode was added to the original Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC versions. - Decide whether you want to replay. Switch 2 saves cannot continue your Switch-version progress, so consider whether starting over suits you.
- Judge the improvement you can actually verify. The publisher states that resolution and frame rate improve, but the cited information gives no numerical targets or independent comparison. Do not assume a particular performance level or that the change will be worth the price to you.
- Compare the exact local cost. Check current prices and stock for the individual edition or physical bundle in your region. Choose the bundle only if you want both games and its price makes sense against buying separately.
Square Enix reported that the series had shipped and sold more than 6 million copies worldwide in its 2026 announcement; that is a publisher-reported combined series figure, not a current independent sales audit. It does not change the practical repurchase trade-off.
