A headline claims that most banking scam attempts now happen on mobile devices, but the report behind that claim has not been identified in the available evidence. Official figures confirm that bank impersonation and social engineering are active fraud tactics; they do not establish that most attempts happen on phones. The distinction matters: losses, scam activity detected by a payment network, and the number of attempted scams are different measures.
Does the evidence show that most banking scam attempts happen on mobile?
No. The available official sources do not provide a mobile-attempt denominator or confirm that more than half of banking scam attempts take place on smartphones. The report referenced in the headline is unidentified, so its geography, sample, definition of an attempt, and method cannot be checked.
That does not mean mobile devices are irrelevant. Scammers use text messages, calls, email, social media, search results, and other channels to impersonate banks and pressure people into acting. But a scam that reaches someone by text is not necessarily a mobile banking scam, and a reported loss is not a count of attempted scams.
What the recent figures actually measure

These figures cannot be added together or used to validate the headline’s majority claim. They cover different populations, time periods, and measures: U.S. consumer-reported losses, activity identified on Visa’s network, and fraud involving a particular payment technology.

How bank impersonation scams work
Fake alerts that create urgency
The FTC describes schemes in which a fake security alert appears to come from a bank. The message may claim that an account is at risk and persuade the recipient to move money to “protect” it. The apparent emergency is part of the deception, not proof that the bank has contacted the customer.
Messages that lead to real-looking payments
Visa says scammers impersonate trusted brands and institutions, manufacture urgency, and deceive people into completing legitimate-looking payments. India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, CERT-In, CSIRT-Fin, and SISA likewise describe social engineering and credential theft as established methods in their 2025–26 BFSI threat report. The report notes that attacks can appear as legitimate sessions or approved payments; that finding does not establish that a victim’s phone was compromised.

Technology-enabled fraud beyond phones
The UK National Assessment Centre’s 2025 fraud assessment describes fraud as increasingly technology-enabled and notes that social engineering and generative AI can help criminals scale attacks. This is UK threat context, not evidence that most banking scam attempts happen on mobile. UK Payment Systems Regulator reports cover authorised push payment (APP) scams reported by payment firms and banks, a distinct reporting measure rather than a count of all mobile attempts.

How to respond to an unexpected bank message
- Do not act on the message’s instructions. Be especially cautious if it urges you to move money, share credentials, or resolve an alleged emergency immediately.
- Verify through a separate route. Contact your bank using the number on your card or its official website or app—not a number, link, or reply option in the unexpected message.
- Do not assume a familiar-looking interaction is genuine. A scam can involve a real payment flow or a session that appears legitimate; verify the request with the bank before approving anything.
- If you have already paid or shared account details, contact your bank promptly. Use its independently verified contact channel to report what happened and ask what steps it can take on your account or payment.
The reviewed evidence supports these precautions against impersonation and social engineering. It does not establish that a particular security app, phone accessory, or device setting prevents a scammer from persuading someone to approve a payment.

What would be needed to verify the headline?
To substantiate “most banking scam attempts,” a report would need to define an attempt, specify what counts as banking-related and mobile, and explain how it counted attempts across channels. It should also state the geography, observation period, sample, and whether it measures messages received, attempted account access, attempted payments, reports, or losses. Without those details, the claim should remain attributed to the unidentified report rather than presented as an established fact.
For context, see the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announcement about India’s 2025–26 BFSI threat report, the UK National Assessment Centre fraud assessment, and the Payment Systems Regulator’s APP scams performance data reports. Their findings concern different geographies and measures, not a shared count of smartphone banking scam attempts.
