Usually, no—not if “investment” means a watch you can count on to appreciate or reliably recover its purchase price. Luxury G-SHOCKs, particularly Casio’s MR-G line, are premium watches with high official prices, but the available evidence does not establish typical resale returns. Buy one for its design, materials, features, and your own enjoyment; treat future resale value as uncertain.
What counts as a luxury G-SHOCK?
For this question, the relevant tier is MR-G, which Casio presents as its flagship square collection. It is important to compare exact references rather than assume every G-SHOCK—or every MR-G—has the same price or resale prospects.

A limited model is not a return guarantee
Casio’s US page lists the MRGB2000GA-1A at $8,000 and says the reference was limited to 500 pieces worldwide. The page also marks it discontinued. Do G-SHOCKs hold their value?
The available figures are not enough to establish a typical MR-G resale return. WatchCharts’ G-SHOCK index displayed $2,076 for an MRGB5000D-related result and a displayed change of -7.2% when retrieved. That is a single index snapshot: the cited result does not establish the period measured, a verified transaction series, or what an owner would net after selling costs. To calculate an owner’s actual return, you would need comparable completed sales for the same reference and condition, plus the purchase price, holding period, and costs of selling. The evidence available here does not establish annualized MR-G returns, typical depreciation, or how quickly a particular model can be sold.

Why the $400,050 G-SHOCK sale is not a benchmark
The striking auction result involved the G-D001, not a production MR-G. Casio describes it as a one-of-a-kind 18K yellow-gold watch made for G-SHOCK’s 40th anniversary and sold through a charity auction. Phillips estimated the lot at $70,000–$140,000 and records a sold price of $400,050. Casio separately reports a $315,000 hammer price and $400,050 including buyer premium and insurance. The figures describe one exceptional charity-auction outcome, not an ordinary owner’s resale proceeds or a forecast for other models.

Casio’s G-D001 announcement describes the watch and auction figures; Phillips’ lot record lists the estimate and completed sale.
How to assess a specific MR-G before buying
Compare the individual watch and offer, not a headline auction record or a seller’s asking prices. For a used watch, look for recent completed sales of the exact reference in similar condition; asking prices alone do not show what buyers paid.

- Identify the exact reference and regional variant. Similar names or appearances do not establish equivalent prices.
- Check production and availability details. Confirm whether a limit or discontinued status applies to that specific model; neither fact by itself proves a resale premium.
- Compare like with like. Match condition and completeness, including box, papers, and bracelet links where applicable. The sources cited here do not quantify how much those factors change resale value.
- Account for the whole purchase and sale. Compare the seller’s asking price with completed-sale comparables, then consider your purchase and selling costs and intended holding period.
- Judge the watch on what you value using it. Consider its design, materials, and features as reasons to own it, rather than assuming they will translate into a financial return.
So, should you buy one as an investment?
Only if you are comfortable with uncertain resale value and would still be happy owning the watch if it does not appreciate. Casio’s listed prices show that some MR-Gs are expensive purchases; the exceptional G-D001 auction shows what happened with one unique charity lot. Neither establishes dependable investment performance for regular luxury G-SHOCKs.
