For most Iceland trips that include hikes, sturdy waterproof hiking boots are the more versatile choice. Choose extra insulation for long periods outdoors in cold weather, and add removable traction aids when paths are icy. Neither ordinary hiking boots nor winter boots are enough for glacier travel: follow a qualified guide’s equipment requirements.
Which boot works best for most Iceland trips?
Start with comfortable, sturdy waterproof hiking boots if your itinerary includes trails as well as sightseeing. Iceland’s hiking guidance emphasizes weather and wind year-round, while recommendations for the Laugavegur trail specifically call for sturdy waterproof boots on rocky paths and snow-covered sections. That advice is for hiking terrain; it does not mean every visitor needs a heavy boot for every walk.
Ferðafélag Íslands notes that gear depends on personal needs, trip length, forecast, and time of year. Check the forecast and the guidance for your route shortly before setting out, then choose footwear for the actual terrain and time you expect to spend outdoors.

When are winter boots the better choice?
Winter boots make sense when cold exposure is a major part of the day—for example, if you expect long outdoor stops in winter. The local guidance does not set a universal temperature or insulation threshold, so decide based on the forecast, duration outside, and your own needs. For ordinary hikes, insulation alone is not a substitute for a waterproof boot suited to the terrain.

Do not assume a warm boot will grip ice. If icy walking is likely, consider removable traction aids designed for walking and check that they fit your boots. These are not glacier crampons and do not make glacier travel safe.
What to pack for hiking
For a general sightseeing trip with some hikes, a sturdy waterproof hiking boot is a practical starting point. Add warmth with appropriate socks and clothing layers if conditions call for it, rather than assuming a bulky insulated boot is necessary for every outing. For a named route or a multi-day trip, use its season-specific packing list and account for the forecast and time outdoors. Ferðafélag Íslands’ “What to bring?” guidance recommends wind- and waterproof preparation regardless of season.

Glacier trips need a separate footwear decision
A glacier is not simply another icy trail. The Environment Agency warns that glacier outings require experience and knowledge of special equipment, and identifies glacier tongues as dangerous without crampons and other ice-climbing equipment. Ferðafélag Íslands lists sturdy leather hiking boots or rigid glacier boots, together with glacier crampons that fit.
For a guided excursion, contact the operator about boot compatibility and what equipment is included before you go. The Environment Agency recommends organized trips with experienced guides as the safest option. Ordinary removable ice grips for paths are not a replacement for glacier equipment.
