Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Plain FTP is not secure for sensitive files sent over the internet or another untrusted network. It sends login credentials and file contents without encryption, so someone able to monitor the network may read them. But “FTP program” can mean software using plain FTP, FTPS, or SFTP—different protocols with different protections. The key is to check which protocol a particular connection uses, not just the name of the app.
Why plain FTP is unsafe
The traditional File Transfer Protocol (FTP) does not encrypt or authenticate its commands, replies, or file data. Its USER and PASS credentials are sent in cleartext, as described in RFC 2228. On an untrusted network, a person monitoring traffic may capture passwords and files. An active attacker may also be able to alter transfers or issue commands.
The security concern is the protocol session, not merely whether the FTP application is reputable. A program that supports secure protocols can still make an insecure connection if plain FTP is selected.
FTP, FTPS, and SFTP are not interchangeable
| Protocol | What it means | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| FTP | Traditional File Transfer Protocol | Does not encrypt its base-protocol credentials or transfers; avoid it for sensitive information on untrusted networks. |
| FTPS | FTP with TLS security extensions | Can protect a session, but protection depends on correct negotiation, server identity validation, and data-channel settings. |
| SFTP | A distinct secure file-transfer option | It is not simply FTP with encryption. CISA identifies it as an alternative to FTP. |
| HTTPS file exchange | File transfer or hosting through HTTPS | CISA identifies HTTPS-based public sites as another alternative for applicable exchange needs. |
CISA says FTP transmits credentials in cleartext and recommends discontinuing or restricting it in favor of more secure options, including SFTP or HTTPS-based exchange. See CISA guidance.

When FTPS is secure—and what can go wrong
FTPS adds TLS through FTP security extensions, but simply choosing an FTPS-capable client does not guarantee every transfer is protected. RFC 4217 explains that the client and server negotiate security for the control connection and separately for the data connection. The extension provides ways to negotiate security; it does not ensure that each session or transfer uses it.
Require protection for both connections
In FTPS, the control connection carries commands and replies, while a separate data connection carries files and directory listings. Clients use the PBSZ and PROT commands to negotiate data-connection protection. PROT P requests privacy and integrity for that connection. If the data channel is not protected, encrypting the login and commands alone does not protect transferred files.

- CAT 8-WORKS WITH YOUR GEAR: This 15ft Cat 8 Ethernet cable is backward compatible with Cat 7, Cat 6a, Cat 6, and Cat 5, and can easily be integrated into existing network infrastructures. It fits routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5s, and smart TVs with standard RJ45 ports.
- CAT 8-SPEED YOU CAN MEASURE: Lab-tested up to 40Gbps at 2000MHz. Real speed varies with your router and devices. Solid copper 4-pair build supports Gigabit, 2.5G, 10G, 25GBASE-T, and 40GBASE-T without dropping your link speed.
- CAT 8-POE-READY FOR IP CAMERAS: On runs of 32.8FT (10m) or less, one cable carries both PoE power and data, so a PoE camera needs no separate power adapter.
- CAT 8-STABLE SIGNAL, NO DROPOUTS: Built with S/FTP shielding and four individually shielded twisted pairs, it ensures low latency and maximum protection against EMI, crosstalk, and noise for a rock-solid connection. An excellent choice for industrial environments.
- CAT 8-RUNS FLAT, WON'T TANGLE: Slim flat braided jacket slides under carpets and along baseboards, around door frames and corners. It lays flat and stays flat, so it won't kink or knot like round cables.
Verify the server, and fail closed
The client should validate the server certificate and identity, require TLS, and refuse to continue if secure negotiation fails. RFC 4217 warns that omitting server certificates can remove important security benefits and leave little protection against man-in-the-middle attacks in the anonymous-Diffie-Hellman case. Do not accept a setting that silently falls back to an unprotected session.
Account for compatibility and other risks
TLS does not fix weak passwords, excessive account privileges, compromised computers, server vulnerabilities, or unsafe file permissions. FTP implementations also have protocol-specific risks, including bounce attacks, password guessing, and port stealing, discussed in RFC 2577.

FTPS can also complicate some legacy firewall setups. FTP uses dynamic data ports, and encryption can hide traffic details that older packet filters expect to inspect. Microsoft documents this compatibility issue in its FTP firewall settings guidance. Check the actual network route and firewall configuration rather than assuming a connection is protected or reliable because it works in one environment.

- On the public internet or another untrusted network: Do not use plain FTP for sensitive files. Prefer a properly managed SFTP or HTTPS-based exchange service.
- If a system requires FTPS: Require TLS, validate the server identity, protect the data channel, and configure the client and server to reject insecure fallback.
- For any protocol: Restrict access, use least-privilege accounts, and keep client and server software maintained. The right configuration depends on the products and network involved.
For an organization choosing between FTPS and SFTP, assess compatibility with existing systems, firewall behavior, certificate or key management, and whether administrators can enforce secure settings. The sources cited here do not establish one option as universally best for every deployment.
