Some free AI token offers are genuine, but “free” does not guarantee privacy or safety. Before claiming one, verify it on the provider’s own site, check which account receives the benefit, and read what data, permissions, and billing conditions come with it. Be especially cautious if a third-party site asks for your password or API key.
What a “free token” offer can mean
The label can describe different arrangements with different risks. Identify which one you are considering before deciding whether to claim it.
- Provider-issued API credits: Credits are applied to eligible API use under the provider’s program terms. Eligibility, data-sharing conditions, eligible models, and limits can vary.
- Free-tier use: You can use a service up to a limit without a separate credit grant. The product’s own privacy and usage terms still apply.
- Third-party resale or pooled access: An intermediary sells or provides access using credits or accounts it controls. You may not know which underlying account handles your requests or how access is managed.
These arrangements are not interchangeable. Confirm whether the offer appears in the provider account where you will use it, and whether you are using a chat product or an API.

Can claiming free tokens expose your prompts?
It can, depending on the program. OpenAI’s Help Center describes a complimentary-token offer for some API organizations that requires opting in to share qualifying API traffic with OpenAI. The page says the tokens apply automatically to shared traffic on listed models when the organization qualifies. It also identifies exclusions, including fine-tuned models, training, evaluations, and tool use; selected-project settings limit the offer to selected projects. Organization owners can opt out, and the account must have a positive balance. This is not a universal, no-strings allowance for every OpenAI user. The page lists quotas by eligible model group; as of October 4, 2026, it describes limits of up to 1 million tokens per day in one group and 10 million per day in another, with smaller quotas for usage tiers 1–2. Eligibility and quotas can change, so check the offer in your own account rather than treating those figures as general free-tier limits.
Privacy terms also depend on the product. Anthropic distinguishes consumer Claude use from commercial and API use. Its consumer privacy article says chats and coding sessions may be used for model improvement if a user enables the setting, if conversations are flagged for safety review, or if the user otherwise opts in. That article covers Claude Free, Pro, Max, and Claude Code with those accounts; it directs commercial and API users to separate terms. Do not assume a consumer chat policy describes API data handling, or that encryption means data is never reviewed.

OpenAI also describes security and data controls, encryption, and business/API certifications, but the stated scope varies by product. Check the relevant product’s terms rather than applying business or API assurances to every service: OpenAI security and privacy.

A genuine provider program may be restricted by purpose, account type, or application criteria. Anthropic’s External Researcher Access Program, described on its official page dated March 16, 2026, supports researchers working on selected high-priority AI safety and alignment topics. Successful applicants receive $1,000 in API credits, with rare exceptions; the credits apply to API use, not the Claude web app. The program describes monthly evaluation timing, and its applicable policy still applies. Check an offer before you claim it
- Start at the provider. Navigate to the provider’s known website or app yourself. Find the offer in an authenticated account or on an official program page instead of relying on an unsolicited message or an ad that resembles the provider.
- Confirm the recipient. Check which organization, project, workspace, or user will receive the credit. Claim it only in an account you control.
- Read the data terms. Look for whether prompts, completions, files, feedback, or other traffic may be shared, reviewed, or used for model improvement. Check the terms for the exact product—consumer chat, business service, or API.
- Inspect requested permissions. A provider setting is different from a request for your password, API key, broad OAuth access, browser extension, executable, remote-control app, or account transfer. Do not give secrets that can expose data or spend credits to an unknown intermediary.
- Check billing mechanics. Determine whether the offer is a credit balance or free-tier allowance, whether a payment method is required, whether auto-reload or a subscription is enabled, when credits expire, and whether paid usage can continue after the allowance runs out. Billing guarantees vary; do not assume a balance prevents charges.
- Check limits and how to leave. Read eligible models, quotas, rate limits, exclusions, expiry, opt-out, and cancellation steps. Confirm usage in the provider’s own dashboard.
- Secure the account. Use unique credentials and available sign-in protections. OpenAI’s API safety guidance discusses account linking and requiring a card or ID as ways service operators may reduce abuse; it is not advice to hand identity documents to an unverified offer site. Why third-party access deserves extra scrutiny
ITPro reported on August 6, 2026, citing Okta Threat Intelligence, that underground sellers were reselling discounted or nominally free access funded through legitimate signup bonuses or startup credits. The report describes pooled access in which a buyer may not see which underlying account handles a request. That is a documented risk of opaque resale, not evidence that every independent service is fraudulent or a measure of how common the practice is. With pooled access, you may have less visibility into account ownership and request handling than when you use your own provider account. If a deal requires surrendering credentials or routing requests through an account you cannot inspect, the low price does not resolve that trust problem.

If you already shared access
- Sign in to the provider through its official website or app.
- Revoke the exposed API key or third-party authorization from the account’s access controls.
- If you entered your password on another site, change it on the provider account and any other account where you reused it.
- Review API usage and billing activity for unfamiliar requests or charges.
- Contact provider support through its official site if you find unexpected activity or cannot revoke access.
