Sometimes—but there is no universal winner. Compare the foldable and a conventional phone over the same ownership period using this calculation: net ownership cost = purchase price + protection premiums + repair or deductible costs + selling costs − net resale or trade-in proceeds. A foldable’s higher upfront price or a costly repair can raise its total, while a longer hold, applicable coverage, or a strong trade-in offer can change the result.
How to compare the total cost fairly
Start with the phones and the period you would actually consider buying and keeping them. Use real checkout prices, not just launch prices, and compare like-for-like storage and condition. A fold and a flip are different products with different price points and use cases, so choose a conventional phone that is a plausible alternative for your needs.
- Set the same holding period. Compare, for example, the costs of keeping each phone for the same number of months. A first-year trade-in figure does not establish what either phone will cost over three or four years.
- Record the purchase price. Use the actual price you can pay for each configuration, noting whether the phone is new or used and whether a discount or trade-in promotion applies.
- Add protection costs. Include premiums for the period you plan to keep the device, plus any deductible or service fee you would owe for a covered claim. Check claim limits, eligibility, exclusions, and whether the specific repair is available.
- Compare repair and replacement scenarios. Use quotes for the exact model and job—such as inner display, cover screen, hinge, or a full screen-module replacement. Keep paid out-of-warranty repair separate from warranty service, a special replacement program, and buying another phone.
- Estimate what you will recover at exit. Compare dated trade-in quotes and private-sale listings for the same model, storage, condition, and local market. Treat listings as asking prices rather than completed sales, and subtract fees, shipping, or other selling costs.
The result is a scenario comparison, not a prediction of your repair risk or resale proceeds. Run more than one case if useful: for instance, no repair, one paid repair, or an eligible covered claim. Do not assign a failure probability unless you have evidence that applies to the exact models and owner population.
What Samsung’s U.S. prices and repair quotes show
Purchase price: list price is only an anchor
Samsung Electronics America’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP list sets the unlocked 256GB Galaxy Z Fold7 at $1,999.99 and the unlocked 256GB Galaxy Z Flip7 at $1,099.99. Repair prices depend on the job and the quote
Samsung’s U.S. repair page separates screen repairs by model and display. In the displayed columns, Galaxy Z Fold6 inner-screen pricing is $200 in one offer column and $429 in another listed price column; Galaxy Z Flip6 inner-screen pricing is $200 and $239 in the corresponding columns. These are not universal out-of-warranty quotes: the offer may depend on qualification and terms, and Samsung warns prices vary by region or authorized service location and exclude taxes and fees. Also check what the repair actually replaces. Samsung describes both a screen-module replacement—which replaces the screen, bezel, and battery—and a separate screen repair that replaces only the front screen where available. Those are different jobs, not interchangeable versions of a single “screen replacement” price. Samsung offers walk-in, mail-in, and at-home service options, and says its authorized repair work includes a 90-day repair warranty. Self-repair is limited to supported devices and jobs
Samsung announced that its U.S. self-repair program added the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 among other products, with genuine parts, tools, and repair guides available through Encompass. The announcement supports a self-repair option for select devices; it does not establish that every foldable model or every repair is covered. Coverage, warranty service, and special programs are different
Canadian Google Preferred Care example
Google’s Canadian Preferred Care listing groups the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Fold under a CAD 359 two-year plan with a CAD 39 screen repair fee. The same page says repairs are unavailable for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold under this listing. These are Canadian terms, not U.S. plan prices, and the fee alone does not prove that a repair route exists for every listed model. Pixel 9 Pro Fold replacement program
Google separately describes an Extended Warranty Program for eligible Pixel 9 Pro Fold devices with functionality issues. It offers a no-charge replacement only after the device is inspected and found eligible; replacements are available starting December 8, 2025, and the program is limited to one replacement per device. Cracked displays or cover glass and liquid intrusion can affect eligibility, and support options vary by location. Trade-in credit is not the same as cash resale
Samsung Business U.S.’s live trade-in comparison shows credits by the old phone and intended destination device. In the displayed comparison, it lists $612 for Galaxy Z Fold7, $432 for Galaxy Z Fold6, $279 for Galaxy Z Fold5, and $231 for Galaxy Z Flip6. These are program-specific credits, not guaranteed cash resale values; destination phone, condition, promotion, and timing can change the offer. One depreciation comparison is not a universal forecast
SellCell reported that Samsung’s Z Fold and Flip series lost 63.7% of value within six months in its trade-in data comparison, versus 48.3% for the Galaxy S series—a 15.4 percentage-point difference. There is no universal private-sale price curve for every model, condition, and market. For your estimate, compare dated offers for the exact model and storage from local trade-in services with similar-condition private listings. Listings are asking prices, not confirmed sale prices; subtract marketplace and shipping costs when estimating net proceeds.

When a foldable may cost more—or less—to own
- More likely to cost more: you pay a substantial upfront premium, need an expensive repair, pay for protection without making use of it, or receive modest proceeds when you sell or trade in.
- The gap may narrow: you buy at a discount, keep the device longer, avoid repair costs, qualify for useful coverage, or receive a strong trade-in offer tied to your next purchase.
- Uncertain until you check: coverage eligibility, model-specific repair availability, local service pricing, and exit value. These can vary by device, region, service channel, condition, and date.
The available figures do not establish which phone is cheaper for every owner, a universal chance of inner-screen failure, or a reliable resale value across markets. Your result depends on the prices and terms that apply to your device and location.
