Neither foam nor silicone ear tips are universally better for sound or fit. The tip that works best is the compatible one that feels comfortable, stays in place, and forms a reliable seal in your ear. That seal can affect what you hear: Shure notes that a poor sleeve seal may cause weak bass.
What matters most: fit and seal
Start with fit, not material. A tip should be comfortable, stable, and able to seal without being pushed too far into the ear canal. A loose or poorly seated tip can compromise sound isolation and bass. Shure advises gently repositioning a sleeve or trying another compatible sleeve if bass sounds weak.
Ear shape, tip size, nozzle design, and insertion all influence the result. Foam and silicone are different ways to achieve a fit; the available evidence does not establish that either material inherently gives better bass, treble, soundstage, or comfort across consumer earphones.

Foam tips
Shure’s soft foam sleeves are compressed before insertion and expand afterward. For those sleeves, Shure instructs users to hold the tip in place while it expands. Follow the instructions for your earphone model, and do not push a tip beyond the ear-canal opening.

Silicone tips
Silicone and other soft-flex sleeves are pliable and commonly offered in multiple sizes. Shure describes small, medium, and large soft-flex options. A different size may improve comfort or seal, but that does not make silicone a universal winner.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Hearing-protection results are not headphone sound tests
A 2010 study by Olav Kvaløy, Tone Berg, and Viggo Henriksen compared foam and custom-moulded silicone plugs used in an electronic hearing-protection and communication system. In that specific setup, foam provided greater attenuation at the measured frequencies, especially below 2 kHz. The authors reported 30–43 dB attenuation for foam across 125 Hz–8 kHz; silicone was around 26 dB from 125 Hz–1 kHz and rose to about 40 dB above that. With earmuffs added, the two plugs provided nearly identical protection—at least 40 dB except at 125 Hz. These are protective-noise attenuation measurements, not headphone frequency-response or music-quality results. The study also used a fit procedure that did not exactly follow either of the standard protocols it cited. Read the SINTEF study.

An earphone field study did not isolate material effects
Phonak’s December 2008 field report on the Audéo PFE offered 60 volunteers foam and silicone tips in small, medium, and large sizes. The foam tips were pre-final and excluded from the results. Phonak reported that 87.93% of 58 participants found a comfortable silicone size, and that 83.33% of 30 participants were satisfied with the earphone’s sound quality after two weeks. Those figures describe the Audéo PFE system; they are not a controlled foam-versus-silicone comparison and do not show that silicone sounds better. Read Phonak’s field report.
Hearing-protection guidance has a different purpose
The American Academy of Audiology’s 2023 consumer brochure describes foam and silicone as common earplug materials used to create a seal for hearing protection. It also notes that sizes and textures vary and that custom earplugs can be obtained through an audiologist. That guidance concerns protection, not choosing music earphone tips. How to choose and troubleshoot ear tips
- Confirm compatibility. Match the tip to the earphone’s nozzle diameter and attachment system. Check whether it fits inside the charging case, if relevant. A tip that attaches poorly or prevents the case from closing is not a useful upgrade.
- Try a suitable size. Test compatible sizes for a comfortable, stable seal. Shure’s guidance is to choose a sleeve that fits comfortably, is easy to insert and remove, and provides the best fit and sound isolation for the wearer.
- Check bass and movement. If bass seems weak, or the tip shifts or feels loose, gently reposition it or try another compatible sleeve before concluding that the earphone itself is at fault. Shure specifically identifies a poor seal as a possible reason for weak bass.
- Use the maker’s insertion method. For Shure foam sleeves, compress the tip, insert it carefully, and hold it in place while it expands. Other earphone makers may give different instructions; follow the guidance for your model.
- Maintain and replace as directed. Shure’s SE215 guide says replacement sleeves should grip the nozzle tightly and fully cover its barb. It also advises keeping sleeves clean and dry and replacing them if they no longer fit properly. These instructions are specific to that product family.
When a replacement tip is the right next step
If the original tips do not provide a comfortable, stable seal, a compatible replacement is a reasonable option. For example, Shure lists Comply 100-Series foam sleeves for compatible Shure Sound Isolating earphones in multiple sizes. Check the earphone model and required size before buying; this is not a universal fit recommendation. See Shure’s Comply 100-Series product page.
For loud environments, choose hearing protection for the exposure and follow its product instructions. Do not use an attenuation result from a hearing-protection plug as a promise about how foam or silicone sleeves will sound with music.
