Electronic marine distress signals can reduce the hazardous explosive waste associated with pyrotechnic flares, but the available official sources do not show that they are better for the environment across their full lifecycle. They also are not automatically legal or recognizable substitutes. Choose a signal that meets the rules for your vessel and location, and that rescuers can identify in the conditions where you may need it.
What “greener” means in this comparison
“Electronic flare” is an informal name; safety authorities use terms such as electronic visual distress signal (EVDS) and electric SOS distress light. The clearest environmental difference established by official sources concerns hazardous waste: pyrotechnic flares contain explosive materials and require careful handling and disposal, while a non-pyrotechnic signal avoids that particular waste stream.
That is not a complete lifecycle comparison. The sources do not quantify or compare battery production, device manufacture, battery replacement, or electronic waste. They therefore support saying that electronic signals can reduce explosive-waste hazards—not that they have a lower total environmental footprint.

Environmental and safety trade-offs
Pyrotechnic flares: effective emergency equipment with disposal hazards
The U.S. Coast Guard’s May 16, 2025 bulletin says pyrotechnic visual distress signals contain strong oxidizers and perchlorates that can pose risks to human health and the environment. It also says expired devices can become increasingly unstable. These hazards make storage and disposal important, but they do not make flares unnecessary: the Coast Guard notes that distress signals can alert responders and save lives.

Electronic signals: less explosive waste, but not impact-free
The same Coast Guard bulletin says choosing non-pyrotechnic visual distress signals instead of pyrotechnics could significantly reduce the environmental impact of explosive hazardous waste. An electric signal still has a battery and eventually becomes electronic waste. Because the cited sources provide no lifecycle assessment or quantified comparison of those impacts, there is no supported basis here for ranking total environmental footprints.
Recognition and performance matter too
A signal only helps if someone recognizes it and it works in the relevant conditions. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) warns that electronic visual distress signals vary and that some produce a different light from pyrotechnic flares, which may not be recognized as a distress signal. Its MIN 542 Amendment 3, published April 12, 2024 and stated to expire March 1, 2027, cautions against assuming that non-SOLAS or non-pyrotechnic products marketed as alternatives are equivalent.

A U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center report from December 2019 describes daytime field tests of hand-held flares, an orange distress flag, a signal mirror, hand-waving, and a flashing LED signal. The tested LED alternated cyan and red-orange, flashed an SOS pattern at 4 Hz, and had an effective intensity of 50 cd. The available report summary does not give comparative detection-distance results, so it does not establish that one type of signal universally outperforms another.

Requirements depend on location, vessel type, and operating area. In the United States, Coast Guard equipment information describes electric SOS distress lights as an alternative to flares for nighttime distress signaling on recreational boats. The Coast Guard’s Ninth District bulletin dated May 16, 2025 describes an approved alternative combining an electric light with an orange flag for recreational vessels and uninspected passenger vessels carrying fewer than six passengers for hire.

Those descriptions are not a blanket approval for every boat, device, or use. Before replacing required equipment, check current federal and state rules, vessel classification, and operating-area requirements. Confirm that the specific light meets applicable requirements; marketing language alone does not establish compliance.
In the UK, the MCA warns that advertised alternatives may not be recognized as distress signals. Check the requirements for your vessel and the relevant maritime authority’s guidance rather than treating an electronic light as an automatic substitute.

How to choose between signal options
Compare the specific devices against the job they must do, not just their labels or disposal profile:
Recommended Free Tools
- Legal acceptance: Is the device permitted for your vessel, location, and operating area?
- Recognition and conditions: Is its signal recognizable, and is it suitable for the day or night conditions in which you may need it?
- Handling and storage: What hazards come with storing and using the device?
- End-of-life burden: What do expiry, battery replacement, and disposal require?
- Backup coverage: Will you still carry any other signals your rules require or your safety plan depends on?
Do not trade away a compliant, recognizable distress signal for an assumed environmental benefit. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: non-pyrotechnic options can avoid the explosive-waste disposal issue, while their full lifecycle impact and equivalence in every signaling situation are not established by the cited sources.

Dispose of unwanted flares safely
Disposal instructions vary by country. In the UK, the government says HM Coastguard no longer accepts unwanted flares from private individuals. It directs owners to ask about third-party disposal through the place of purchase, marinas, life-raft services, local authorities, or waste disposal businesses. Owners remain responsible for flares until they are used or properly disposed of.
The UK guidance says not to dump flares, put them in household or garden waste or recycling centres, abandon them, or fire them except in an emergency. It also says not to use expired or damaged flares. These instructions are UK-specific; elsewhere, contact the local maritime authority or an authorized disposal service for the correct route.
