Sometimes—but the Bluetooth connection is not proven to make a toothbrush clean better. An app can help you notice missed areas, brushing time, or excessive pressure if you use its feedback consistently. But a randomized trial comparing the same powered brush with and without app assistance found similar results on key measures. If you already brush thoroughly for two minutes twice a day, a less expensive powered brush—or a manual one—may be better value.
What you are paying extra for
A Bluetooth toothbrush pairs with a phone app to provide feedback during or after brushing. Depending on the model, that feedback may cover brushing time, pressure, or which areas of the mouth you have brushed. These functions are model-specific, not universal: Oral-B says 3D tracking is limited to iO 9, while AI brushing recognition is available on Genius X and iO models. The practical value is behavioral. Feedback might help someone who routinely rushes, presses too hard, or misses the same spots. It is less compelling if you already brush carefully and do not expect to consult the app. Bluetooth does not replace the brushing routine itself: the American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. Does app coaching make teeth cleaner?
The most direct test of app assistance
A randomized trial published in 2022 enrolled 90 dental students with gingivitis and followed them for eight weeks. It compared an app-assisted Oral-B Genius 8000, the same powered brush without app assistance, and a manual toothbrush. Both powered-brush groups performed better than the manual group on some measures, but the app-assisted and non-assisted powered brushes were similar in plaque removal, gingivitis reduction, and incidence of gingival abrasion. The app-assisted group brushed longer than the manual-brush group and reported better self-rated cleaning ability than that group. Because the trial involved one brush model, a specific population, and a short follow-up, it does not show that apps can never help; it does mean the study did not establish an added clinical benefit from the app over that same powered brush without it. Why comparisons between smart brush brands do not answer the Bluetooth question
A separate six-month randomized trial of 110 adults compared Oral-B iO with Philips Sonicare DiamondClean and reported advantages for Oral-B on selected plaque and bleeding measures, as well as a higher share of participants reaching a healthy gingivitis case status at week 24. The study was funded by Procter & Gamble, and two authors were company employees. Bluetooth versus a regular powered or manual brush
It helps to separate three questions: whether you brush consistently, whether a powered brush suits you, and whether app feedback adds something you will use. The ADA says both manual and powered brushes can effectively remove plaque and reduce gingival inflammation when used appropriately. Powered brushes may be easier for some people with dexterity difficulties, disabilities, older age, or braces. The ADA Seal of Acceptance is a more meaningful shopping signal than connectivity alone: the ADA says the Seal reflects its review of evidence for safety and efficacy. How to decide whether the premium is worth it for you
- You may benefit from the app if you regularly miss parts of your mouth, struggle to brush for two minutes, or want reminders about pressure—and expect to use the feedback rather than ignore it.
- You may not need the app if you already brush thoroughly and consistently, or if you want an electric brush for dexterity or braces but have no interest in phone-based coaching.
- Compare total cost, not just the handle. Brush heads are recurring, model-specific consumables. Check head compatibility, availability, replacement schedule, and ongoing cost for the exact handle; the ADA product listing names several Oral-B head families, but the fit for a particular handle should be verified. - Consider everyday usability. Grip, comfort, charging, battery life, modes, and pressure alerts may matter more to you than app connectivity. Current prices and bundles vary, so compare the models and replacement heads available where you live.
- Weigh evidence by what it actually tests. A study comparing two connected brush systems cannot tell you whether the app itself helps; look for a comparison between the same powered brush with and without coaching.
Verdict: pay for feedback only if you will act on it
Bluetooth is a convenience feature with a plausible coaching role, not a proven shortcut to better cleaning. Choose it if coverage, timing, or pressure feedback addresses a real habit you want to change and the added cost—including replacement heads—fits your budget. Otherwise, prioritize a brush you will use comfortably and a consistent two-minute routine; the app is optional.
