Birkenstocks can fit wide feet if the exact style comes in Regular width and its footbed matches your measurements. Birkenstock’s US guide recommends Regular for medium-to-wide feet, but width labels alone can’t confirm fit: check the footbed’s side and toe clearance and make sure the straps feel secure without pinching.
What Birkenstock width should you get?
Birkenstock’s US fit guide says, “Choose Regular for medium to wide feet or Narrow for narrow to medium.” These are Birkenstock’s width recommendations, not universal shoe-sizing standards. Check the width offered for the exact style and size you want; not every style or size is necessarily available in Regular. Birkenstock’s US fit guide explains its options.
Some individual styles are offered in both widths. For example, the Madrid Big Buckle product page lists a Regular option. Confirm the width on the listing for the specific size before ordering.

Measure both feet
Birkenstock recommends measuring foot length and width, checking both feet, and using its size chart or calculator to select a size. Its printable foot-measuring template gives another option: print at 100% scale, verify the millimeter scale with a ruler, trace your foot, and compare the outline with the template. You do not need to buy a measuring tool to use the printable method.

Check the sandal while it is on
- Open the straps and place your foot in the sandal.
- Fasten the straps so they hold your foot comfortably, without pressing or pinching.
- Check that your toes do not touch the footbed edge. Birkenstock suggests about ¼ inch of space around the foot.
- Look at both sides: there should be some clearance, but your foot should remain within the footbed sides rather than sliding over the side rims.
These are Birkenstock’s fit checks, not a guarantee that every model will feel right. Comfort can vary with foot shape and style construction. The Birkenstock UK fit FAQ also says the footprint mark on the footbed distinguishes widths: an outlined footprint indicates Regular, while a filled footprint indicates Narrow.
Do Birkenstocks run wide?
Birkenstock offers Regular and Narrow options in many models, and its US guide positions Regular for medium-to-wide feet. That does not mean every Birkenstock is wide, or that Regular will suit every wide foot. The width available, footbed shape, measured size, and fit of the straps all matter. Check the precise product listing and try the sandal on if possible.

What does Birkenstock mean by support?
Birkenstock describes its footbed and roomy shape as accommodating the foot. Its UK FAQ says its shoes are designed to allow toes to spread naturally, unlike narrow fashion shoes. This is the manufacturer’s design intent; the cited brand guidance does not establish that a pair will relieve pain, treat a foot condition, or feel comfortable for everyone.
How to break in a new pair
Birkenstock recommends starting with loose straps and wearing new sandals around the house for one to two hours at a time, then gradually increasing wear. This is the brand’s adjustment advice, not a promise that discomfort will go away. If the fit remains uncomfortable, reassess the size, width, and strap adjustment rather than assuming the sandal simply needs more wear.
