There is not enough evidence to say that AMD mATX and Mini-ITX motherboards are generally or significantly more expensive than Intel equivalents. A fair comparison must match form factor, socket generation, chipset and feature tier—and use prices captured in the same country at the same time. The available figures show a wide range among AM5 Mini-ITX boards, not a market-wide AMD price premium.
Why the headline claim is hard to establish
A board’s brand platform alone does not make it a like-for-like comparison. Mini-ITX and mATX boards differ in physical size and expansion options; socket generations determine which processors they support; and chipset tiers can bring different storage, connectivity and expansion features. Comparing a premium AMD board with an entry-level Intel board—or an AM5 model with an Intel board for a different CPU generation—can make a platform look more expensive simply because the products serve different needs.
The available sources do not provide a same-date, same-country sample of AMD and Intel boards matched across both mATX and Mini-ITX. They therefore do not establish an overall or statistically meaningful AMD premium.
What the AM5 Mini-ITX prices show
TechSpot’s 2024 review listed eight AM5 Mini-ITX boards at review-era prices ranging from $120 to $410. These are historical figures, not verified listings for October 2026, and they should not be read as current prices or as a comparison with Intel.

| AM5 Mini-ITX board | Chipset | Review-era price |
|---|---|---|
| Gigabyte A620I AX | A620 | $120 |
| ASRock A620I Lightning WiFi | A620 | $140 |
| Gigabyte B650I AX | B650 | $160 |
| ASRock B650I Lightning WiFi | B650 | $200 |
| Gigabyte B650I Aorus Ultra | B650 | $240 |
| ASRock B650E PG-ITX WiFi | B650E | $290 |
| MSI MPG B650I Edge WiFi | B650 | $290 |
| ASUS ROG Strix X670E-I | X670E | $410 |
TechSpot’s AM5 Mini-ITX roundup shows why the price range alone is not a useful platform comparison: chipset and feature packages vary across these boards. Its Gigabyte A620I AX has one M.2 slot and no PCIe 5.0, while the B650I Aorus Ultra has three M.2 slots, including one PCIe 5.0 slot. The X670E-I adds two USB4 ports and other high-end features. Those differences make a bare price comparison incomplete.
A lower-cost AMD example—and its limits
TechSpot described the Gigabyte A620I AX’s $120 review-era price as reasonable against Micro-ATX A620 boards that were around $110 at the time. That comparison is a useful counterexample to the idea that every compact AMD board carries an obvious surcharge: the $10 difference was between the reviewed Mini-ITX board and the cited mATX A620 boards. It is the reviewer’s comparison, not a current price check or a market-wide survey. See the review’s price and feature discussion.

Intel comparisons must specify the socket generation
PC Gamer’s 2026 Mini-ITX guide includes AMD AM5 boards as well as Intel LGA1851 and LGA1700 examples. These Intel sockets are not interchangeable: the guide identifies the ASRock Phantom Gaming B860I Lightning WiFi as an LGA1851 board for Core Ultra 200S processors, and the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-I as an LGA1700 board for 12th- through 14th-generation Intel CPUs. Its AMD example, the ASUS ROG Strix X870-I, uses AM5. The models differ in specifications, and the guide does not establish a matched price comparison among them. Consult the PC Gamer 2026 Mini-ITX guide for its examples and socket context.
For an actual buying decision, compare boards that support the processor generation you intend to use. A price difference between LGA1700, LGA1851 and AM5 products may reflect the generation or product tier rather than a simple AMD-versus-Intel premium.

How to make a fair price comparison
Build a small, matched comparison rather than relying on a single flagship-versus-budget example. For each board, record the following:
- Form factor: compare mATX with mATX, or Mini-ITX with Mini-ITX.
- Socket and CPU generation: confirm the boards support the processors being considered; do not treat distinct sockets as equivalents.
- Chipset and feature tier: distinguish entry-level, mainstream and higher-end boards.
- Memory and expansion: note memory type, PCIe generation, M.2 and SATA counts, and available expansion slots.
- Connectivity and power: compare Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB4 or Thunderbolt where present, power delivery and bundled accessories.
- Price context: capture the country, date, seller and whether each figure is an MSRP, review-era price or current street price. Compare prices captured under the same conditions.
If there is no suitable match—for example, if one platform has only a higher-tier board in the required form factor—state that limitation rather than treating the price gap as evidence of a general platform premium.

What the evidence supports
The historical AM5 Mini-ITX examples span $120 to $410, and a TechSpot review-era comparison placed one entry-level AM5 Mini-ITX model near the price of mATX A620 alternatives. Intel Mini-ITX examples cover multiple socket generations, but the available sources do not pair them with equivalent AMD products at comparable, contemporaneous prices. Current prices and stock are not established by these historical review figures. The claim that AMD compact motherboards are significantly more expensive than Intel equivalents is therefore unproven without a properly matched, current comparison.
