AirPods are both input and output devices. Their microphones send captured sound—such as your voice—to a connected phone or computer, while their speakers play audio from that device to you. That combination is what makes them work as a wireless headset.
Why AirPods count as input devices
An input device sends information to a phone or computer. When you speak during a call or use Siri, the microphones in the AirPods capture your voice and pass it to the connected device. Apple confirms that each AirPod has a microphone for calls and Siri in its AirPods settings guidance.
The microphone used can switch automatically between the two AirPods, or you can select the left or right AirPod in its settings. Which options are available can depend on the AirPods model and connected device.

Why AirPods count as output devices
An output device presents information from a phone or computer. AirPods do this through their speakers, which play music, videos, call audio, alerts, and other sound for the wearer. Their playback behavior can also respond to whether they are being worn: Apple documents that AirPods can stop playback when removed and resume when put back in its wear-detection settings guidance.

Can AirPods handle input and output at the same time?
Yes. During a call, for example, the AirPods send your voice to the other person through their microphones while playing the other person’s voice through their speakers. The same two-way arrangement applies whenever an app uses the AirPods as a headset for both listening and speaking.
Do AirPods work as input and output on non-Apple devices?
AirPods can pair with non-Apple devices as a Bluetooth headset, allowing you to listen and talk. Apple notes that some functionality may be limited and that Siri is unavailable when AirPods are connected this way; available controls and features can also differ by device. What about the AirPods charging case?
The charging case is not the component that captures your voice or plays audio to you. Those input and output functions happen through the AirPods themselves.
