There is no reliable yes-or-no verdict for AI stocks as a group. A stock is overvalued only relative to the earnings and cash flows its current price assumes—and whether the business can deliver them. To assess an AI-linked company, examine its valuation, growth, cash generation, AI investment returns, and how the price holds up under less optimistic assumptions.
What counts as an AI stock?
“AI stock” is not a standardized category. It can mean a chipmaker supplying AI infrastructure, a cloud provider building data centers and AI services, a software company selling AI features, or a business using AI within an existing operation. Those companies have different revenue drivers, costs, capital needs, and risks, so their valuation multiples are not automatically comparable.
The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report says AI-related share prices are underpinned by forecasts of strong long-term earnings growth. It also warns that incorrect assumptions behind those forecasts could prompt a revaluation. That makes the central question not simply whether a multiple looks high, but what future performance it requires.
Check what the share price assumes
Trailing and forward P/E
The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) compares a share price with earnings per share. Trailing P/E uses earnings already reported; forward P/E uses forecast earnings. Forward P/E can help investors assess a company expected to grow quickly, but it is only as reliable as the earnings estimates behind it. Check the forecast period, the date of the estimate, and how uncertain it is.

For market context, the Federal Reserve’s April 2025 Financial Stability Report describes the S&P 500 aggregate forward P/E as based on expected earnings over the next 12 months. An individual company’s ratio should be compared with peers using the same earnings basis and period, not treated as interchangeable with an index figure.
Growth relative to the multiple
Compare a company’s valuation with its realized and expected earnings growth, margins, and relevant peers. There is no universal P/E cutoff that makes a growth stock cheap or expensive. Instead, ask what growth and profitability the current price appears to require, and whether the company has a plausible path to achieve them.

Forecasts deserve scrutiny: rapid revenue growth does not necessarily become rapid earnings or cash-flow growth. Costs of building infrastructure, competing for customers, or developing and operating AI services can affect how much growth reaches shareholders.
Separate business momentum from valuation
Revenue growth can show that a business is expanding, but it cannot by itself establish that its shares are fairly valued. Distinguish reported results from projections, and company-wide revenue from AI-specific revenue when the company discloses that split.
Rank #3
NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65% year over year, in its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K. That is a historical company-wide result—not an AI-segment revenue figure, a current forecast, or a valuation multiple. Strong reported growth is relevant evidence about the business, but investors still need to compare the price with the earnings and cash flows expected from it.
Test whether AI investment can earn a return
AI infrastructure can require substantial spending before it produces durable revenue. Review capital expenditures alongside depreciation, financing, and the incremental revenue, margins, and free cash flow the investment is expected to generate. The key issue is whether returns can persist—not whether a company is spending heavily.
Rank #4
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says the company would continue capital expenditures to support cloud offerings and investments in AI training and other infrastructure. The filing also reports investment-related effects on income. Investors should distinguish those effects from operating performance when judging whether the business is improving and whether investment is translating into returns.

Estimate how the valuation changes if growth slows, margins fall short, or investors assign a lower terminal multiple. A scenario analysis does not predict which outcome will occur; it shows how dependent an implied value is on assumptions that may not hold.
Best Value
- Set a base case. Use a clearly identified earnings or cash-flow forecast and state the period it covers.
- Reduce growth or margins. Model slower adoption, stronger competition, or higher costs rather than assuming every forecast is achieved.
- Use a lower terminal multiple. Test whether the valuation still looks supportable if enthusiasm or long-run growth expectations fade.
- Compare the outcomes with the current price. Note which assumptions drive the difference; do not present a scenario as a precise price target.
Vanguard’s July 2026 discussion notes that an AI earnings boom could support elevated prices, while raising the question of how much upside remains if substantial AI gains are already priced in. That is why scenario testing matters even when the underlying business is growing.

Peer comparisons are useful only when they are genuinely like for like: use the same date, similar business models, consistent accounting definitions, and the same earnings period. If comparing AI-related companies, also consider expected revenue and earnings growth, profitability and free-cash-flow conversion, AI-related capital spending and expected returns, balance-sheet and customer-concentration risks, and sensitivity to slower adoption or competition.
A broad-market multiple offers context, not a stand-alone fair-value estimate for a faster-growing or more capital-intensive company. The Federal Reserve’s April 2025 report also discusses how the equity risk premium is affected by returns available on lower-risk assets. It said the difference between the S&P 500 forward earnings-to-price ratio and the real 10-year Treasury yield was well below its historical median at that report date; it did not establish a current premium for individual AI stocks.
