The ARCTIC Freezer 36-S A-RGB is a compact, single-fan tower cooler that supports current Intel LGA1851/LGA1700 and AMD AM5/AM4 sockets. Its cooling results in PC Gamer’s tests were close to those of the standard dual-fan Freezer 36, but that model was quieter and slightly cooler in several comparisons. The S is most compelling if its local price, one-fan layout, or A-RGB styling suits your build; check the case’s 156 mm cooler clearance and plan a sensible fan curve.
What the Freezer 36-S A-RGB is
This is a single-fan tower CPU air cooler, not the standard dual-fan Freezer 36 and not the non-A-RGB Freezer 36-S. ARCTIC lists the black version as SKU ACFRE00198A and the white version as SKU ACFRE00199A. Verify the precise model, color, and lighting type on the product listing before ordering. ARCTIC’s product page is for the white A-RGB SKU.
The cooler combines four 6 mm direct-touch copper heat pipes with 54 aluminum fins and one 120 × 25 mm P12 Pro A-RGB fan. The included thermal interface material is 0.8 g of MX-7, and ARCTIC lists a six-year warranty. The official specification sheet gives the full component and electrical details.
Will it fit your CPU, motherboard and case?
Supported sockets
ARCTIC lists compatibility with Intel LGA1851 and LGA1700, and AMD AM5 and AM4. Confirm your motherboard socket against the cooler’s current product listing and installation documentation; socket support alone does not establish that every board layout or case combination will be clear.

Case clearance and dimensions
The cooler measures 126 × 88 × 156 mm (length × width × height) and weighs 685 g. Check that your case allows at least 156 mm of CPU-cooler height, using the case manufacturer’s stated clearance. The figure is the cooler’s height, not a guarantee of fit: nearby components and case layout can still matter.
Fan and lighting connections
The included P12 Pro A-RGB fan uses a standard four-pin PWM power connection and is specified for 600–3000 rpm, with zero rpm below 5% PWM. Its lighting has 12 A-RGB Gen 2 LEDs and a three-pin A-RGB plug and socket. Check that your motherboard or controller has compatible fan and 5 V three-pin A-RGB connections before buying; do not confuse that lighting connector with a four-pin 12 V RGB header.

How well does it cool?
PC Gamer’s review, published July 21, 2026, found the S broadly competitive with the standard Freezer 36 in its comparative tests. These are results from that publication’s test setup, normalized to 20 °C—not temperatures you should expect in every PC. The reviewer also noted that the tests were not laboratory conditions and that process variation is expected.
| PC Gamer test | Freezer 36-S A-RGB | Standard Freezer 36 |
|---|---|---|
| Baldur’s Gate 3, 1.275 V | 54 °C maximum; 51 °C average | 54 °C maximum; 51 °C average |
| Prime95, approximately 170 W | 66 °C maximum; 62 °C average | 64 °C maximum; 60 °C average |
| Prime95, approximately 220 W | 80 °C maximum; 76 °C average | 79 °C maximum; 75 °C average |
In those workloads, the difference was small: the S matched the standard model in the game test and was a little warmer in both listed Prime95 comparisons. Your CPU’s power, case airflow, ambient temperature, mounting, and fan curve affect results, so use these figures to understand the review comparison rather than predict your own CPU temperature.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 AND LGA1700: Improved contact pressure distribution through Intel mounting frame for efficient heat transfer thanks to even CPU contact surface
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE FOR HIGH-END CPUs: With its 4 offset heat pipes, the single-tower cooler enables fast heat transfer to the heat sink. There, the heat is efficiently dissipated by pressure-optimised 120 mm fans.
- INNOVATIVE FAN MOUNTING: Innovative click installation system makes it easier to install the cooler or replace the fans. The Freezer 36 is compatible with most 120 mm fans
- SIDE-FLOW HEAT SINK: By opening the fins on the side, the pull fan draws additional cool air out of the case through the heat sink, optimises ventilation and increases cooling efficiency
- DIGITAL A-RGB: The 12 A-RGB LEDs placed along the fan hub and the transparent rotor with its closed design ensure even and rich illumination
How loud is it?
PC Gamer measured 47 dBA with the fan at 100% PWM and described maximum speed as very loud. That is the review’s full-speed measurement, not a universal noise reading or a claim about ordinary use. The fan runs more quietly at lower speeds and may still cool effectively there. Set a reasonable BIOS fan curve rather than letting the fan stay at maximum speed without need.
Freezer 36-S A-RGB vs. standard Freezer 36
The standard Freezer 36 comes with two P12 PWM PST fans and is listed in PC Gamer’s comparison at 159 mm tall; the S has one P12 Pro A-RGB fan and is 156 mm tall. PC Gamer found the standard model quieter and cooler in most respects and judged the S difficult to recommend when their prices were close. That price comparison reflected the review’s time and regions, not current pricing.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
| Factor | Freezer 36-S A-RGB | Standard Freezer 36 |

AMD AM4 and AM5
PC Gamer describes AMD installation as attaching the mounting brackets, applying thermal paste, and securing the cooler with two screws. Follow the illustrated instructions for your exact board and socket, including the cooler’s orientation and screw-tightening guidance.

Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851
ARCTIC’s installation manual documents replacing the motherboard’s integrated loading mechanism (ILM) with the included contact frame for Intel installation. This is a more involved process than the AMD procedure. Follow the manual’s CPU alignment instructions, engage all four screws loosely by two turns, then tighten them evenly in a cross pattern. Keep the removed ILM and other parts: the manual says the ILM must be reinstalled if the motherboard is returned for service or warranty.
If you are not comfortable removing and reinstalling the board’s ILM, read the full illustrated manual before starting or have an experienced builder perform the installation. Do not substitute generic mounting steps for the instructions supplied for the cooler and socket.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the Freezer 36-S A-RGB?
- It is a reasonable fit if you want a single-fan tower cooler with A-RGB, your socket is listed as supported, your case has the required clearance, and the S is priced attractively against the standard Freezer 36 where you live.
- Consider the standard Freezer 36 if current prices are close and you prioritize the quieter, slightly stronger comparative performance found in PC Gamer’s tests over A-RGB and the S’s marginally shorter height.
- Check alternatives and your build requirements if your case cannot accommodate a 156 mm cooler, your motherboard lacks a compatible three-pin 5 V A-RGB connection and lighting matters, or your CPU’s power and workload demand more cooling than this class of air cooler can provide.
