For a timeout that affects Chrome only, increase CHROME_TIMEOUT in seconds. To persist a 300-second limit for the ArchiveBox collection, run archivebox config --set CHROME_TIMEOUT=300. Use TIMEOUT instead if you need to raise the per-extractor limit more generally; CRAWL_TIMEOUT controls the whole crawl, not an individual Chrome capture.
Increase the timeout for Chrome
Run this from the ArchiveBox collection you want to configure:
archivebox config --set CHROME_TIMEOUT=300This stores a Chrome-specific timeout of 300 seconds. The ArchiveBox configuration reference documents CHROME_TIMEOUT=300 as an example. Its documented recommended range for TIMEOUT is 30 to 3000 seconds, but that is guidance rather than a universal ideal. Choose a limit appropriate to the page and the runtime your deployment can allow. ArchiveBox configuration reference.
Check the active value
Inspect the collection’s configuration with:
archivebox config --get CHROME_TIMEOUTYou can also run archivebox config to view configuration values. Check for environment or configuration-file settings as well, since they may affect what a command uses.

Choose the setting with the right scope

These values govern different stages. Raising CRAWL_TIMEOUT will not fix Chrome being stopped at its per-extractor limit, and raising CHROME_TIMEOUT will not extend the total crawl limit. ArchiveBox documents the setting scopes and precedence here.
Set the value persistently or for one command
Collection configuration file
Add the setting to the existing [ARCHIVING_CONFIG] section of ArchiveBox.conf in the data directory:

Environment variable for a single command
To apply a larger Chrome timeout to one capture without making it the stored collection setting, prefix the command with the environment variable:

If the issue affects multiple extractors rather than Chrome alone, set the shared value instead:

Diagnose the failure before raising the limit further
- Identify the failing output. Note whether the failure is for DOM HTML, a screenshot, PDF, SingleFile, or another Chrome-generated output.
- Check which limit is active. Inspect
CHROME_TIMEOUTandTIMEOUT, and look for collection-level or environment overrides. - Raise the Chrome-specific value and retry. Start with a reasonable increase, then check whether the same output completes.
- If it still fails, investigate the failure itself. A longer limit cannot ensure that a page renders correctly or that ArchiveBox produces every output.
A 2023 ArchiveBox issue described a report in which Chrome’s PDF and screenshot retained a loading spinner while HTML-related outputs were missing. It is a historical example, not evidence of a current general defect. Compare the exact symptoms in your installation with the issue tracker; do not assume every Chrome timeout has the same cause.
Common timeout troubleshooting
- The command still stops at the old limit: verify the effective setting with
archivebox config --get CHROME_TIMEOUTand check whether the command’s environment or collection configuration supplies another value. - Changing
TIMEOUTdid not affect Chrome: setCHROME_TIMEOUTfor Chrome specifically; an extractor-specific value takes precedence over the shared setting. - The entire crawl stops even though Chrome has more time: check
CRAWL_TIMEOUT, which limits the total crawl rather than an individual extractor. - The timeout is longer but the page is still blank, spinning, or missing outputs: treat this as a rendering, site-behavior, browser, or output-generation issue to diagnose, not proof that the timeout must be increased again.
