Then configure Nginx to proxy to the ArchiveBox listener used by your deployment. The public URL and the local listening address do different jobs: BASE_URL controls canonical links and redirects; BIND_ADDR controls where ArchiveBox listens.
Set the public canonical URL with BASE_URL
ArchiveBox defines BASE_URL as the canonical public URL of the instance. It is used to build absolute links, redirects, notification email links and metadata. When set, it takes precedence over the incoming Host header when ArchiveBox builds URLs. Use the scheme and hostname users actually visit, including https://, and do not add a path unless your deployment intentionally serves ArchiveBox from a path prefix.
For example, if Nginx serves ArchiveBox at https://archive.example.com, set:
BASE_URL=https://archive.example.comArchiveBox can be configured through archivebox config --set, ArchiveBox.conf, or process environment variables. After changing a deployment variable, verify the effective configuration: persisted or scoped settings can take precedence over a later environment change. See the ArchiveBox Configuration reference.

Keep BIND_ADDR separate from the public URL
BIND_ADDR is the socket ArchiveBox listens on, not its public domain. For a proxy running on the same host, the documented loopback default is 127.0.0.1:5797. For Docker networking or remote LAN access, the reference gives 0.0.0.0:5797. In a container, binding only to its own loopback interface prevents a proxy outside that container from reaching the service.
Do not put https://archive.example.com in BIND_ADDR. Set the public URL in BASE_URL, and make the Nginx upstream address and port match the socket reachable from Nginx.
Find the right Nginx upstream for your deployment
The current official Docker image starts ArchiveBox with archivebox server --init 0.0.0.0:5797; its listener inside the container is port 5797. The host-side port can be mapped differently in Compose, so Nginx must target the address and port that are actually exposed to it. Check the image/version and Compose port mapping rather than copying older examples that use ports such as 8000 or 8098. The exact upstream hostname depends on where Nginx runs. A proxy on the same host may connect to a host-published loopback port; a proxy in the same Docker network may connect to the ArchiveBox service name and container port. Use the corresponding reachable address in your Nginx proxy configuration. ArchiveBox’s current guidance establishes the listener and URL behavior, but does not prescribe a universal Nginx location block or timeout settings.
Configure HTTPS and forwarded scheme behavior
With an explicit HTTPS BASE_URL, that canonical value is the source of truth for generated URLs. If BASE_URL is empty and ArchiveBox derives the scheme from the request, its configuration reference specifies trusting X-Forwarded-Proto from the proxy. Ensure the proxy’s scheme information reflects the public request; otherwise ArchiveBox may construct links or redirects with the wrong scheme.
ArchiveBox derives Django ALLOWED_HOSTS and CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS from BASE_URL and SERVER_SECURITY_MODE. Avoid reflexively adding fixed values copied from legacy proxy examples; first use the documented canonical URL and inspect the effective settings.

Use the current Docker HTTPS setup wizard when applicable
The current ArchiveBox Docker guide describes a first-run wizard for public HTTPS setup. It provides DNS, upstream and certificate settings for Nginx Proxy Manager and other listed proxy choices, checks the resulting public HTTPS URLs, and then saves BASE_URL and SERVER_SECURITY_MODE. If you are deploying with the supported Docker flow, follow that wizard rather than guessing the values. See the ArchiveBox Docker documentation.
Choose certificate coverage for the security mode
The certificate layout depends on how the instance serves archived content:

*.BASE_URL, usually obtained with DNS-01 validation.
ArchiveBox warns against on-demand TLS and against obtaining individual certificates for snap-* hosts. Do not assume every deployment needs a wildcard certificate; use the certificate pattern corresponding to the security mode and hostnames you actually serve. Pin BASE_URL explicitly in safe-subdomains-fullreplay mode: ArchiveBox documents it as required for redirects in that mode and displays a misconfiguration banner if it is missing. Refer to the current Docker HTTPS guidance.
Verify the setup from the public address
- Confirm that ArchiveBox’s effective
BASE_URLexactly matches the public HTTPS origin. - Confirm that
BIND_ADDRlistens on an interface and port reachable from Nginx, and that the proxy upstream uses the correct host-side or Docker-network address. - Open the public HTTPS address and check that the page loads without a proxy error.
- Follow a generated absolute link or trigger a redirect; confirm it retains the public hostname and HTTPS scheme.
- If using subdomains for archived content, verify that the certificate covers the required wildcard names and that the configured security mode has an explicit base URL.
Troubleshoot wrong links, redirects, and proxy errors
Links or redirects use the wrong hostname
Check the effective BASE_URL first. It should be the public canonical URL, not the container hostname, internal address, or Nginx upstream. If an environment variable was changed but behavior did not change, check whether a persisted or scoped configuration value is taking precedence.

Links or redirects use HTTP instead of HTTPS
Set BASE_URL to the public https:// URL. If you intentionally leave it empty and rely on request-derived scheme handling, confirm that the proxy provides the forwarded scheme behavior described in the configuration reference, including trusted X-Forwarded-Proto.
Nginx cannot reach ArchiveBox
Check the actual listener and deployment mapping. The current Docker image listens inside the container on port 5797; a host port may differ. Also check that a containerized ArchiveBox is not bound only to container loopback when Nginx is outside that container.
Subdomain redirects fail or ArchiveBox shows a configuration warning
In safe-subdomains-fullreplay mode, explicitly set BASE_URL. Check that the certificate covers the base hostname and wildcard subdomains required by the setup, following ArchiveBox’s HTTPS guidance.

Legacy proxy instructions do not work
Older ArchiveBox examples may use different ports. Use the version and Compose configuration actually deployed, and do not treat old port, host, or CSRF snippets as current defaults.
