The right ArchiveBox alternative depends on what you need to preserve. For browser-based crawling and interactive replay, consider Browsertrix; for saving readable articles to your own infrastructure, consider wallabag. If you want broad, multi-format captures and imports, ArchiveBox itself remains a strong fit. These tools solve different archiving jobs rather than offering interchangeable versions of the same thing.
Choose by what you need to preserve
Start with the artifact you want to keep, not the interface you prefer. A readable article, a rendered page, an interactive website crawl, and a portable archive package call for different tools.
| Need | Best documented fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keep multiple representations of pages and related media | ArchiveBox | It documents original and self-contained web files, screenshots, PDFs, WARC, extracted text, media, imports, scheduling, and several access methods. ArchiveBox documentation |
| Crawl websites and replay interactive captures | Browsertrix | It supports browser-based crawl workflows, WACZ archive packages, and replay. Self-hosting requires Kubernetes and Helm 3. Browsertrix deployment documentation |
| Save articles for comfortable later reading | wallabag | It focuses on article extraction and reading across browser, phone, RSS reader, or e-reader, rather than broad website crawling. wallabag self-hosting |
This is a capability comparison based on the projects’ documentation, not a performance ranking or benchmark.
When ArchiveBox is still the better choice
ArchiveBox is not necessarily something to replace. Its documented outputs include original HTML, CSS and JavaScript, self-contained HTML, screenshots, PDF, WARC, extracted text, and media. It also describes CLI and web interfaces, APIs, filesystem access, imports, and scheduling. That breadth suits a collection where you want more than a readable-text copy or a browser replay package. See the official ArchiveBox documentation for current setup and format details.

For a straightforward self-hosted deployment, ArchiveBox recommends Docker Compose. Its documentation lists NFS and SMB among supported storage options, which may be useful if you already keep archive data on network storage. A NAS is optional; the documentation does not endorse a particular drive or model. Include storage choice in your backup plan, and consider whether the archive can be restored rather than merely whether it can be written.
When Browsertrix is a better fit
Browsertrix is the closest fit here when the task is to crawl a page, a site, or a collection through a browser and preserve context for interactive replay. Its archived items use WACZ packaging, which can be imported or exported for replay. Its user documentation covers workflows from a single page to whole websites. Explore the Browsertrix user guide and archived-items documentation to understand the capture and portability workflow.

Account for its operating requirements
Browsertrix is described as cloud-native. Its self-hosting guide requires a Kubernetes cluster and Helm 3, so it is a more involved operational choice than a Docker Compose-oriented setup. Check the deployment guide against the infrastructure and maintenance capacity you have before choosing it.
Capturing sites that require sign-in
Browsertrix supports configured browser profiles for signed-in sites. Its guidance recommends dedicated archiving credentials rather than a personal account. This can reduce account risk, but it does not guarantee successful capture: site behavior, access rules, and changes to the page can affect results. Review the crawl guide and browser-profile configuration guide, and consider the site’s terms and the sensitivity of information in the account.

Check the current security guidance
The Browsertrix deployment documentation reports an access-control issue affecting releases from v1.15.0 up to, but not including, v1.22.8, and recommends v1.22.8 or later. Version guidance can change; check the live deployment documentation and its linked security advisory before deploying or upgrading.
When wallabag is a better fit
Choose wallabag when your goal is to save web articles and read them later using infrastructure you control. Its self-hosting page describes access through browser and phone, as well as RSS-reader and e-reader workflows. That focused reading experience is different from preserving a site crawl, a rendered page, or a set of media files. See wallabag’s self-hosting information for its supported setup options.

Compare portability, capture scope, and maintenance
A useful decision is not simply “which app has the most features?” Ask what remains usable if the application changes, whether the capture contains the material you need, and what it takes to operate the system.
- Portability: ArchiveBox documents formats including HTML, JSON, PDF, PNG, and WARC. Browsertrix packages archived items as WACZ for contextualized replay. Choose based on the formats and replay workflow you actually need, and test exporting and restoring a sample.
- Capture scope: Article extraction is not a substitute for a site crawl. A screenshot or PDF may preserve appearance but not interactive behavior. Decide whether you need text, source files, media, page rendering, or replay.
- Automation: ArchiveBox documents imports and scheduling; Browsertrix documents crawl workflows from a page to a website. Validate how each fits your intake process instead of assuming a capture can be scheduled or replayed in the same way.
- Operating burden: ArchiveBox recommends Docker Compose for an easier setup; Browsertrix self-hosting calls for Kubernetes and Helm 3. wallabag is oriented toward article saving and reading. Match the deployment to the skills and maintenance time available.
- Storage and recovery: ArchiveBox lists NFS and SMB support, and Browsertrix deployment guidance supports configurable storage. The storage medium does not replace backups: decide how to protect and restore both archive data and any configuration needed to use it.
Use ScreenshotNeo for clean website screenshots
If your actual need is a website screenshot rather than a durable, replayable archive, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for ArchiveBox’s multi-format archival collection or Browsertrix’s WACZ crawl-and-replay workflow. It can be useful when you need a clean page image or PDF in an application or AI-agent workflow.

One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a PNG of a chosen URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.png
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Consent-banner handling, popup and chat-widget removal can be turned off per step. Responses identify page verdict and billing status; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan without a card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Sign up for the free plan.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a read-it-later app for site preservation: wallabag is for article-focused saving and reading, not a like-for-like substitute for broad crawling.
- Assuming a screenshot is an archive: a screenshot records a visual state; it does not provide the multi-format collection or interactive replay described by ArchiveBox and Browsertrix.
- Underestimating deployment needs: Browsertrix’s Kubernetes and Helm prerequisites matter if you want to self-host it.
- Relying on a personal login for capture: for Browsertrix profiles, follow its recommendation to use dedicated archiving credentials, and treat successful authenticated capture as site-dependent.
- Ignoring export and backups: verify that your chosen format can be read or replayed in your intended workflow, and separately plan how to recover the stored data.
